Will the pacing pick up any time soon?

It's an easy way to differentiate characters while still staying in the realm of 'real' hair colours for a show that's trying to be grounded.
You'll see this more in shows targeted towards women because right now actual naturally jet black hair is trendy and worshipped as the jackpot in the beauty lottery so you have to make sure your protagonist is some shade of off-dark brunette instead so she feels average instead of being a one-in-a-million model-tier yamato nadeshiko beauty with a million followers on tiktok.

I still think it's a good high school drama. The author is pretty good at conveying how how schoolers think and feel about things. Both this show and polar opposites have relatable characters to the point I said "literally me" to each one of them.

He's manipulative, dishonest, narcissistic, unremorseful, and non-empathetic. He's also incredibly annoying, but that's not a trait of a psychopath. I don't know how anyone can look at the way he was introduced at the start of last episode, when he compared people to mechanisms, and spoke about how he feels nothing for these relationships, and say: 'He's a well-adjusted individual.'

You kinda have to be to be successful with women, and is not necessarily "evil" or morally wrong. It can be morally correct when the end goal is a happy, mutually-beneficial relationship.
>and spoke about how he feels nothing for these relationships
Because he hasn't found love.
Dating women you don't love is normal. You snag the woman before you develop feelings and before she can friendzone you, and then you figure out if you love her or not while you're dating. This is normal. There is nothing wrong with this.

>Love is a choice
kek no
It's an emotion. Emotions are not voluntary. I cannot simply suddenly choose to feel angry at the container of gum currently sitting on my desk. There is no reason for me to be angry at that container of gum. No matter how hard I try to choose to be angry at it, I will not actually feel angry at it.
>>
>>
>>
>>287500788
There's a huge difference between suppressing actions which are based on emotions and completely suppressing emotions.
The former is what a human with discipline is capable of doing. The latter is impossible. No human can do the latter. They *will* feel emotions. It is how they choose to act on those emotions which determines if they have discipline or not.

Yeah, I'm surprised by how weak her backstory is, considering how much of the story hinges on it. Her not being an interesting main character would be easy to excuse if this was an ensemble cast like Polar Opposite, but that's not the case. I don't know, I was expecting a lot more from this author, but we're three episodes in, there's barely any setup, and the whole thing is shaping up to be just a nothing melodrama between this group of boring characters.
>>
>>287500877
I think introducing Yota first, this lovable, genuine, caring dude who's so pleasant to be around that he makes even the MC lower her guard, made Minato no favors either. I wanted to see more of that dynamic, but now this annoying dude has hijacked the show by forcing his way into every other scene.

I got tricked into watching a missunderstandings anime again. For some reason this one gets a pass and is called a masterpiece just because of the author. This would be Polar Oposites if the main characters didn't just assume what other characters were thinking or feeling.
Also isn't Koyuki the only one with a normal japanese height for her age? Why is she being called a midget? It's everyone else who is taller than average.
>>
>>
>>287499394
It feels like the only reason he's even interested in the MC is because, from his perspective, she seems to be into Yota. So his fragile ego can't comprehend why she sees something in Yota but not in him, which makes him even more unlikable. Having said that, I don't like the dude, but at least he gets a reaction out of me instead of being a flat line like so many MMC in these types of shows who are just the archetypal "nice guy™"
>>
I have nothing against highschool dramas, but this one in particular is presenting the most trivial of things as if they are monumental, earth-shattering events. I really can't help but think, halfway through one of the main girl's monologues, about how statistically some of the kids in her year at school are likely being abused by their parents, or how some live in abject poverty. This isn't something I always think about when I watch teen dramas, I usually always give them the benefit of the doubt and buy into the heightened emotions and the overdramatisation and whatever, but this one is such a nothingburger. All this overthinking about what goes through other people's minds worked really well in Seihantai because it was a cute romcom and all the misunderstandings were insignificant, but here it's played completely seriously, and it's hard to take seriously. If the main girl didn't look like she just found out her entire family had been murdered every time someone says something to her, then I really wouldn't mind. I only care anyway because I enjoyed the first couple episodes when it was mostly just about tall guy and small girl.
For the love of god, if it's causing you such unimaginable anguish every time he opens his mouth, just tell Minato to fuck off already and be done with it.

I like this show so far, but the thing that made Polar Opposites special was its avoiding of a lot of common rom com tropes most notably having all the couples except one start dating by the first season, and then Ramparts of Ice is back to will they/won't they, love triangles, misunderstandings, and toxic guy love interests.

It's not bad, it's just sorta boring. The pacing feels really slow, I feel my mind wandering when watching. I do like it as a show, though, it doesn't look quite as good as Seihantai but I think Lapin Track is one of the most underrated studios currently (the guy who did Seihantai's composition is working on Nippon Sangoku I'm pretty sure and it's glorious) but it looks good in it's own respect. I just hope it picks up soon, I get that it's about the characters and I typically like slowburn dramas which I'm assuming this wants to be, but there also feels like a lot of wheel spinning.

Ikoku Nikki was perfect as is though.
I'm not sure why you guys keep comparing these two shows. Just because they both have introscpection doesn't mean they are similar. This show focuses solely on relationships, Ikoku Nikku was more about reevaluating life.
>>
>>
>>287511789
Ikoku Nikki got the balance right. There was real tragedy (Asa's parents dying) that facilitated all of Asa's melodramtic behaviour. She was believable. She was also portrayed as being kind of dumb and not able to process her own emotions, whereas the grumpy midget in this story seems to have very good emotional awareness, about herself and others, and yet she still seems mindbroken over nothing. I would expect someone like her to not be so easily effected by what other people might say or think, and to be aware that all the standard petty teenage drama is beneath her. The characters in this show seem to act and think in a way that's far more mature than they actually are emotionally.

>>287513350
Kimi ni Todoke is actually a really good series, though. The characters are likable, the way the cast gradually warms up to the MC feels believable, and it follows several different relationships at once, all of which are well developed by the end of the run. The way the cast matures over the course of the series is also excellent. It helps that it isn't trying to be a grounded series; its tone is pretty lighthearted. The author clearly knows her strengths and weaknesses. The main problem with Koori no Jouheki, aside from its weak cast of characters, is that it tries to be a grounded drama, but the drama at its core is a nothingburger. As a result, it's hard to care. And what makes it extra funny is that the story acts as if she was systematically bullied to the point of contemplating suicide.
>>
>>
>>287513862
>The way the cast matures over the course of the series is also excellent.
I don't disagree with your overall opinion, but come on, they are just incredibly childish ("pure", if you will) in the beginning, so them "maturing" isn't as impressive as you make it sound.
