2 - a lot of the main cast is dead and the rest are orange juice

I really hope they put new characters in it, and do away with the old ones entirely - or reference them as little as possible. I think the way Nier Automata references Replicant without using it as a crutch could be a way to go... But I'm not sure I trust Yoko Taro with the writing.
