I lost my 15 year's old cat a few months ago, the house was way too empty, so I ended up getting this little devil. I've raised half a dozen cats, but they were all dames, this is the first boy I've got, and he's absolutely insane. I play more with him in a week than I've played with my old calico throughout her life, and it wasn't for lack of trying.
Named him Charlie (no, not for Kirk)

gib apartment balcony catio ideas pls
building manager said no to cages so im pretty sure i won't be able to put up netting over the railings as well
i was thinking of some out of the box idea like having an outdoor table and benches or something where i can attach netting to the legs and have the cats wander underneath. i don't have any furniture on the balcony so could be win/win

My 6 month old kitten ate some cables. Threw up some and pooped out some. Next day wouldn't eat the whole portion of her food and started acting lethargic so I took her to the vet the same day. They did some xrays and the impresions were:
>Radiographs do not show evidence of retained wire fragments or complications associated with
linear foreign body ingestion at this time. Findings suggest successful passage and/or removal of
ingested material.
They gave her an IV and Cerenia and sent her home saying to bring her back in two days. I got her some wet food they recommended and she ate about 2~3 spoons of it but didn't want to eat any more. She peed yesterday but no poop, neither today so far although she did drink a bit from her fountain. Gave her food but again barely eating.
Has anyone gone through something like this?? When should I be concerned and take her to the ER?
>>
>>5100401
Update I got a syringe and gave her some water to drink and some wet food mixed with some tuna water to eat. She drank about 1/2 tsp and ate about 1 tsp of food. Some minutes after she pooped solid and peed, then an hour later she pooped soft stool. She's a bit more energetic now and she's been more vocal (she's a very talkative cat). She's still kicking her mouth a bit from now and then which I've read could be a sign of nausea. She has her meds in about 2 hours. Still feels like an improvement.
>>
>>
>>5100462
She's been mostly sitting on the bed on top of blankets. She pooped again very little and gooey. Now she's just very nauseous. I tried moving her from on top of the treadmill and she gagged, she keeps licking her mouth. I'm thinking of giving her the Cerenia an hour early to control the nausea and avoid her vomiting the little food she's been able to keep down today.

I have a cat. She's about 4 years old. She was always good with other cats (due to my living situation, she had been through multiple introductions, all went well, the cats were great together, even with kittens.) 2 months ago, housemate got a 3-4 month old kitten. I did introduction same as always, and it all went great on paper. My cat was fine with the kitten... Until kitten started pouncing on her. It's very obvious a play pounce, and naturally, older cats don't necessarily like this. But normally, in my experience, kitten take the hint after being hissed/swatted/growled at. The kitten was around siblings and mom so it's not like she doesn't know cat language - but for some reason, she really doesn't get that the older cat is not interested in engaging.
The older cat is fine with the kitten. Doesn't love her, but she can tolerate her playing, hanging out or sleeping nearby without issue. She only had a problem with being pounced at - but the kitten consistently keeps doing it. The kitten is not aggressive, this is very obviously play, but I fear it's going to cause the cats to become antagonistic in the future. Still, it's like the kitten cannot comprehend it when my cat says "I don't like this", and keeps at pouncing at her until she runs off to a high place. I keep having to separate them to give my cat a breather, which has never been a thing before. I try to play and tire the kitten out, but she completely ignores toys if the other cat is around, clearly preferring a wrestle playmate.
What can I do to fix this behavior? I've never dealt with a cat who couldn't understand a single "fuck off" from another cat.

Putting my cat down tomorrow morning. It sucks. He’s not even 12 yet but the last two years he’s been diabetic and nothing has been helping and there’s nothing the vet can do for him anymore. His back legs have nearly entirely given out on him and he can hardly walk anymore. I’ve had him since he was a few months old, and when he was young he was an expert food thief and loved stealing pizza the most. I got a pizza tonight and have been letting him eat a ton of it cuz it’s his final dinner. I hate this. It really sucks but it’s for the best for him.

I have a 3-year-old British Shorthair that's been with me for a month now (he needed a new home). I've kept him in my bedroom so far and he's gotten used to it, but how do I introduce him to the rest of the house? I'm worried if I just plop him down in another room he'll end up panicking and go back to hiding like when I first got him.

Interested in getting a cat maybe but there is one big problem
I own like 30 tarantulas, and i've heard anecdotally that some cats get their hunting instinct activated when they see the spider in the enclosure and then next thing you know you have an injured cat, and a dead tarantula at best. At worst a dead cat and a missing tarantula.
Is there a way to get them adjusted to seeing them, or like.. idk a way to train them not to have a massive hunting instinct. Idc if they go after little bugs or anything else in the house, I don't want to kill their drive, I just don't want the risk of them targeting my spiders specifically. And yes I could keep a special room for just the spiders but I don't have the space for them in an isolated room other than my bedroom.

Thanks, anon, I won't be taking him for granted ever again. It's been one of the most insane weeks of my life. Your girl was beautiful, and the world's a little less bright without her.
For reference in case anyone else finds themselves in my shoes: My cat is only 6 1/2 years old, and I suppose some underlying kidney issues started to show themselves. He came down with a case of pica, and unfortunately the type of litter he decided it would be a good time to start eating was his Breeze pellets, which are fucking massive clay chunks. Those things blocked up his stomach and fucked up his kidneys enough to send him into a stage 4 shutdown. By last Monday, my vet was telling me that I should be making euthanasia plans. Decided to hold off a little longer, and somehow by the next morning, his kidney functionality to return enough for anesthesia.
Ended up doing biopsies on some liver cysts, which luckily ended up being benign byproducts of the kidney damage, and verifying the blockage had passed through to his colon, which is likely what restored partial functionality.
From there, we needed to restore kidney functionality as much as possible. We put him on epogen to restore his blood's anemic levels (Supposed to be around 40.0, started at 22.0, began epogen at 18.6. Life-threatening is ~10.0), monitoring his white blood cells, which are still high and indicate an ongoing infection, and lowering his creatine levels (1.0-1.8 is normal, he went in to the vet at 12.0, last bloodwork had him at 3.8 and trending downward).
After nine days of stool softeners, laxatives, and waiting, the vets finally just enema'd him twice to force the pellets to pass. By Sunday, his anemia levels were down to 14.5, which caused the vet to look for donors to do a blood transfusion, so we can buy a bit more time to see if the epogen starts working in a few weeks.
Final cost: ~$7,500, and that's with the vet capping my bill.

Never owned a pet before but I gave into my partner wanting a cat. Brought her home on Monday and she's scared of everything but us. She barely eats and doesn't want treats, only pets and snuggles. We got her in a separate room but it seems that when we leave she just hides.
Should we be spending time with her if all she wants to do is get pet and sleep? I don't seem to see her want to explore the room that much, and she constantly gets spooked by sounds and toys. What do?
>>
>>
>>5108207
That's normal behavior. Cats are extremely autistic and don't usually handle being rehomed very well, the fact that she's actually coming out to see you for attention is actually pretty good by most standards. Just let her hide and don't worry about her refusing to eat/poop, in a few more days she'll become comfortable enough to roam around and in a few weeks she'll start acting like she owns the place.

friend is offering a kitten to me but i have an adult cat already that's FIV+, but they told me this kitten is not going to be given to a shelter if nobody gives it a home, and it's going to be forced to be an outside cat. it's weighing on me heavily because risking the kitten to get FIV if it doesn't have it from birth already means I willingly gave it a disease, but the other option is to let those people abandon it and it get injured or sick or FIV anyways if it doesn't go to a home.
and like i said there's a chance that the mom cat had FIV already so maybe the kitty already has it, but they're not going to be able to test the mom and the kitten cant be tested until it's 6 months old or something like that.
any suggestions?

Just gotten a 12 week old Sphynx kitten about a week ago, best cat I have ever come across in terms of temperment and personality. Now though I am starting to think about his diet and what to feed him and I am unsure what to go with. The breeder I got him from was a very sterotypical fancy cat breeder with an incredibly thick Polish accent who insisted on that he be fed raw minced beef exclusively. However, since I have gotten him he won't always eat the mince all at once which leads to the mince oxidising brown as the day goes on which then makes him not want to touch it. I switched to dried as a result and he has eaten it well enough, but he has eaten less and less to the point of me putting mince out this morning which led to him devouring it whole.
So he can eat either but he prefers raw meat over dried, but online I keep seeing contradicting info on whether a meat diet is good or not. I personally just want to give him the best food possible so he can stay healthy and price isn't too much of an concern but I am based in the UK so brands are different than the US. I am considering Purina One dried and then mixing it with a rotating selection of cooked meat minced up so he gets a variety of tastes (chicken, beef, pork etc).

Any tips to help my cat? He's an unholy terror that needs 5 pills+liquid a day to not die and every single one is like pulling teeth. He won't tolerate a purrito because we did that to him as a baby for medicine and if he sees me with a towel he will run off and hide under the bed 100% of the time. I am by my self doing it most of the time as well. And he's too smart for hiding it in food to work either, he always eats around the pill.

My cat would come up to me purring and try to rub his face on my face. I'd pet and scratch him but would avoid the face rubs because it was annoying.
And then one day while trying to play a computer game, he jumps in my lap starts rubbing his face on my face and I couldn't stop him because I was at a critical point in the game. Afterwards, I began aggressively face rub him with my face as a "how do you like it" kind of thing. And he started purring louder than I've ever heard him.
So now when I give him my undivided attention petting sessions, I include face rubs.

Crush the pill real fine and then mix it in some food. You'll have to figure out the proportions so that he doesn't detect the medicine and refuse to eat it. And he'll have to eat it all to get the proper medicine dosage.

Feline anons have any of you had any experience using this product in picrel from my understanding the 0.075% pyrethin is a highly dangerous pesticide and neurotoxin to cats (the dog version of the same soap has 0.15%). My white kitty (I mention its white because of the higher chance of skin issues) has a small flea problem because of an outdoor stray that passed some to him. I can't afford a vet consultation or any high end flea medication they would offer and I would like to get to work on dealing with these fleas ASAP because they are fucking me up as well. I'm just incredibly worried that I'm going to poison my cat. Are all of the stories about how "it killed my cat/made my cat disabled" just user error of people putting tons of the soap into their cats fur, not rinsing it out properly, and/or letting them lick themselves during the bath? If I follow the bottle directions properly and don't allow my cat to groom himself during the bath is it really as harmful as everyone says? Of course not medical advice or anything, I'd just like some input on these flea soaps.
Bump
>>
>>
>>5110963
I use Advantage II since it's simpler and easier than a bath. You just have to apply it at the base of his neck close to his skin so he can't lick it. Its active ingredients are imidacloprid and pyriproxyfen, so the only real concern is using it on pregnant or nursing cats.
Somehow my indoor only cat got fleas and I used only 2 (monthly) doses and that got rid of them. Your flea infestation sounds pretty heavy though, so you'll probably need 4 or more doses.

>get 12 week old sphynx kitten
>clingiest thing in the world that wants to play constantly if he isn't demanding head rubs
>screams if I am not in the same room as him
>decide to get another sphynx kitten that is 8 weeks old to keep him company and because of how amazingly loving they are I just want more
>the 8 week old is exactly like the 12 week old, but now at the age of 14 weeks the eldest doesn't meow or like being pet anymore
Have I fucked up? He doesn't hiss or run away when he see's me but he now only tolerates me petting him by rubbing his cheek when he's lying on his bed briefly. He play fights with the other kitten constantly, is this because I have gotten an extra kitten or is this just what happens when kittens reach the 14 week mark? I know I shouldn't be worried but it is almost like an overnight transformation in personality and I keep thinking about whether it is something I have done to cause it

Just to clarify further, I practically had to scalp him when he wanted to be pet before I got the other kitten and he would be demanding me doing it for like an hour before falling asleep. He used to suckle a lot too and screaming was he default for everything. Now though he will duck if I try to fuss his head and doesn't really sleep on my lap at all, often lying on his blankets instead where I can a gentle cheek rub in before he starts to nibble or turn his head away

If there are any fellow bongs in, vets will be trying to drum up business before the animal prescription price changes. I got called today asking if I was interested in getting a special priced dental check up with a further discount for being a member. It's not really malicious or anything just don't get anything you don't need. I was in for an annual check up for my pair less than a month ago and their teeth were fine.

I've been noticing small cat turds in random places in my home lately. I can tell they aren't intentionally trying to go outside the litter box. It seems more like they're using the litter box, but a small piece gets stuck to them, and then gets dislodged as they walk around. What can I do about this?
I have two cats: a skinny male and a chubby female. Not sure if it's just one, or both of them doing it.

I love my boy, even if I have to accept I got fucking fleeced by answering a fucking newspaper ad advertising Maine coon kittens.
I wouldn't change anything though. He's been very healthy, very happy (for the most part) and actually wants to spend time with me. I just wish I could find toys he actually likes, other than the wheel and sleeping in his cat tower he doesn't really engage with much I try and get him.
I've also been fighting hair knots with him. It's been pretty bad, I don't know if he's not grooming himself or what but it seems like they just started cropping up in the past two months

My cat is about to turn 20 years old and has been absolutely unbearable for the past 4. Yowling 10 times per day for a minute straight, often in the middle of the night.
Doesn't even go outside to piss or shit anymore, which wouldn't be too much of a problem if she wasn't MISSING the fucking box 90% of the time. I had to put adult diaper craps around it to soak in the piss to avoid completely destroying the woodfloor.
I'm so mad and angry and I'm genuinely forgetting all the good time I had with this pet.

>I wouldn't change anything though. He's been very healthy, very happy (for the most part) and actually wants to spend time with me.
that's the most important thing really. i'd rather be fleeced and end up having a good cat, than get a proper maine coon that ends up being an asshole. I have two maine coons but they also happen to be good cats which I'm glad of. funny story, their breeder ended up getting scammed as well and it's what caused her to become a breeder who is now pretty reputable. she still has that cat who is now old and who's still her favorite cat

this pretty much. I have two maine coons, and I never had a single scratch on me in over 2 years. and I bathed them, trimmed their claws, brushed them, pet them on their bellies, held them tight against me, played with my bare hands. the breeder is also great and dedicated to the extreme, so that definitely had an influence

My cats are similar with how they don't seem interested with any of the toys I get them. My wife's friend gave us a toy her cats like though and ours love it too. It's just some little Christmas tree stuffed with catnip, nothing really different from dozens of other toys, but for some reason these guys absolutely love it.
Cats are weird and difficult to please.

So I went to the vet today. The red teeth are the ones that needs to be removed and the dark blue ones need to be removed at one point. Same goes for light blue. Feel like it would be better to put her down than go through with it and her having zero teeth at the end.
>>
I can still hardly believe that this is my last night with my cat as he's getting put to sleep tomorrow for oral cancer. Little guy has zero idea and though I can tell he's in pain and not doing well he's still moving around, eating, grooming himself and purring when laying on my lap. This is the first cat I've done a planned thing like this, the others in my life either went on their own or were in a horrible state that euthanasia was the obvious option to end their suffering.

They're siblings and born on the same day but the male cat (Chester the calico one) keeps bullying the female Alice who seems to want to do nothing but lay down and relax and he wants to play violently all the time
What do I do? do I have to give one of them away? will this stop when they become adults? they never fight over food and infact take turns even if one bowl has food in it and get along just fine otherwise besides the big one trying to force the small one to play when she is relaxing or trying to take her comfy seat sometimes
I feel like he was meant to be an outside cat or something because he loves going into the balcony they're like complete opposites
They're both spayed

I've been slowly introducing my pet to the outdoors and while she has began to take it well (we've been out 4 times), she sneaks low to the ground. You fellas think this is something to do with her wearing the harness, or just being outside and in a new unfamiliar environment?
>>
>>
>>
>>5112889
>>5112890
Likely both, but mostly the harness. I tried to harness train my cat for a while, and he would slink low to the ground too when wearing it, even indoors where I started out getting him used to the harness. I had to give up on training him with one because he was an escape artist. From what I've read it's a pretty common reaction to wearing one though.
>>
>>5112912
Cool. Or maybe not cool. Not surprising. When I put it on her, she does go docile and sit/lay down. It's a double velcro + snap deal and she hasn't tried to get out yet. She's been accepting of me carrying her outside and putting her in the yard. We went out last night and she walked all around the front yard for a good 15 minutes.
>>
>>5112917
What I did at first to try to get him used to it was use it as a blanket on him or pet him with it, and he was pretty responsive to that in a positive way. The transition to actually wearing it never went quite as smoothly as I would've liked, but I think there was probably a way to ease into it a little moreso. Still, it seems to be a common growing pain with harnesses, and your cat will probably adjust with time.

Sometimes one cat figures out how to access an area another doesn't. Like opening a cabinet door or jumping atop a shelf. Sometimes it's not as explicit as that and you'll just have to put the more excitable cat into another room where you play with him.

Make damn sure the wood isn't going to be harmful for your cat first. Some types of pallets are treated with various chemicals that make it unsuitable for use in the home, and any of these chemicals that could hurt humans, your cat is much smaller and needs a much smaller dose to be hurt by.

This is well and truly outside my areas of expertise, so I recommend asking in >>>/diy/ and doing some of your own research but here's a jumping off point.
https://aandipallets.com/how-can-you-tell-if-a-pallet-has-been-chemica lly-treated/
I don't think this is the only concern you need to be aware of though. What they're used for after and what they've come in contact with is another possible concern. I would personally rather just eat the cost of wood and know I'm picking out something safe for my cat. But I'm sure if you're willing to do some research you can mitigate the risks.

My cat is passing. Old boy I had since back when life was better and the future looked a lot brighter. He has extra toes. We named him Marvin after Marvin the Martian. Truth be told, he was the replacement for my childhood posse of cats, and I never really bonded with him like them, and I am feeling intense guilt for that now. I got a dog and he took a back seat to her. I feel like a real dick even though I could never regret my dog. Even before that I had become distant. I'm afraid I'm like that with my human family, too.
The cat who had been Marvin's pair (we always had a boy and a girl) passed away two years ago- she was a lover and demanded to snuggle with me always. I went away for education and basically left her and never got back to where I was with her after.
I try to spend time with my loved ones but idk how to be "there" for them aka snuggling with the cat and connecting my energy vs just being around on schedule as a duty. My mind is always elsewhere. I feel really terrible. I am afraid Marvin is in pain but my loved ones are vehemently against euthanising him, and it would be costly to do so at the time of night. I think he will pass during the night, but what if I am wrong and I am letting him suffer all night? Everyone will hate me no matter what the reality or cost is, if I were to do that against their wills. We're all just awfully sad.

So I’m right and that made you mad?
If cats looked like small dogs but acted the same you wouldn’t like them. That’s it. You’d also think they were dumber and less thoughtful and believe they were dirtier despite the same grooming behaviors, even keeping the rake tongue.
I find this thought and how it triggers you amusing because I would still like cats if they looked like small dogs.

>first cat girl Mandy
>lived to 16
>died of kidney failure
>had to put her down after one night she woke me up screaming
>Wouldn't stop unless I held her and cuddle her
>Took her in to the vet the next morning
>Mandy had several dozen litters
>First one is the most memorable
>Six kittens
>4 males 2 females
>Two of them came out pitch black
>Name them Nig Man
>Man got bit by a rat and died while still very young
>Kept two of the five, the two females
>Name the other female Grey (cause she was grey)
>Mandy hated Grey with a passion
>Constant fighting with between the two of them
>Nig was lazy retard, but extremely lovely and exigent when it came to cuddles, wouldn't take a no
>Grey, perhaps due to Mandy's aggression, grew up to be independent
>She would occasionally vanish and return several days later smelling death and piss
>Mandy was a proud cat
>Would cease to use a blanket if she saw either of her daughter using it before her, same with the water filter and food jar
>Loved catching pigeons and bring their internal bits for the litter
>Both Nig and Grey would still suckle even at 3 years old and Mandy sometimes would just give up and lay there giving milk to the two of them
>Nig would live to 4 only
>Had only one litter, three kittens
>Went on a hunt for her kittens and never came back
>Saw her lifeless body near the entrance to our street a day after she went out, hit by a car
>Mandy took the motherly role almost immediately
>Grey would live longer, actually she might be still alive
>Family decide to move out from the country
>Go to gather the cats
>Mandy and Co all enter their transport boxes without an issue
>Grey bolts into the bush never to be seen again
>Year pass
>Old neighbor (aunt) calls up telling out grey cat came up to her house and stay there for a bit
>Grey's with a litter now and lives in the wild
Those were all the cats I had, all gone now. I miss Mandy the most, she was a true mother and champ.

My mother is a lovely person and treats her cat well yet her cat is a total cunt (will hiss and growl at any strangers that come into the same room as it) and my cat is extremely chill (let's strangers pick him up, completely fine around other animals). I recently had to put my elderly cat down and I still feel shitty about it. It's like I failed her by doing that to her. I wish she could have just died peacefully of natural causes in the comfort of her home. But I didn't want to extend her suffering. No matter what it's gonna feel awful and it just fucking sucks.
>>
>>5116309
Interesting perspective. I thought I had failed by not putting mine down. The vet implied she had a little more time and to bring her back when it came. But she declined so fast at home. My only experience was how our dog we had put down lived for quite a while with issues, and he could have probably gone even longer.
I only hope she wasn't pained and the drugs she had been put on lasted until then. But maybe there is something to be said about passing on her couch rather than an operating table.
>>
>>5116023
I don't know how to deal with it exactly, but I'm a very sensitive person and yet I recovered. I planned to have her put down (reply above) but it happened so fast I watched her take her last breath at home. And that doesn't bother so much to think about now. But I still don't look at photos of her typically.
I do remember longcat died at home so suddenly afterward, and that shared grief helped me a little. That meant her owner wasn't perfect either. I think the gist is there is only so much you can do. Can't make death perfect. It has to work out.
>>
>>5116309
>>5116526
I too wish it would be of natural causes, I hate the idea of having to be the judge for it.. like I'm the cause and guilty of it. He's just declined a lot this past week so it will have to be done next week. I want it to be done at home where he's comfy rather than it being an emergency
I've been trying to make a plan for what to do before/during/after to help me cope (for now it's doing opposite making me sad thinking about it but I know I will be glad I did it later). Right now I'm making some clay and ink prints.
Is there anything you guys did before, during or after for yours? I'm just figuring out how you mourn someone passing on, since it's my first time.
>>
>>5116789
Take as many pictures as you can, spoil him like crazy with all his favorite things, even giving him human food like chicken, fish or lunch meat. Basically just try to make his last days as comfortable and loving as you can. You'll know when its time. Cats hide pain but if you know your cat you will be able to tell.
