This looks like Australian Magpie. Which is a passerine not corvidae.
Just for the record.

No shit. But that's not the question, is it? That's why the mice went to Magrathea to commissione Slartibartfast to build the gigantic supercomputer called Earth to figure out what the question is.
Damned psychiatrists.

Those appear to be black vultures.
Black Vultures are very agressive, they can't smell, so they typically follow turkey vultures to carcasses and fight them off.
The cats are likely slightly stronger than the vultures, but the vultures' aggression would give them the upper hand.

To be fair, I had the same reaction to my sister telling me about that turkey on Roosevelt Island. We used to live in Yorkville but I've since left Manhattan (and NY altogether) and live somewhere where turkeys are just part of the scenery but my sister is still in New York so to her, that turkey is some amazing thing to see.
She lost her shit at a heron once.
A fucking heron.
In New York.
They're common as fuck but she's somehow never seen one. It's just a matter of perspective and context.
She hasn't told me about this bird, though. I'm guessing it's a woodcock considering >>5113766's description of its behaviour.
>>5116937
There’s this weird New York effect: the city is so dense and artificial that any visible piece of non-human life that isn’t a pigeon, rat or Hasid feels like it’s been “placed” there on purpose so a bird like that [presumably] woodcock doesn’t read as “animal" to New Yorkers, it reads as “incident" unless you're the type to go through The Ramble regularly or you live near someplace marshy like Jamaica Bay.
Even nature in NY is artificial. It's carefully manicured and planned.
