I always thought Cirno's dress was a reference to the shinsengumi uniform pattern and how it occasionally gets used for kites on Childrens' Day. Still, nice find on Cirno's naming origins; didn't know it was Italian.

Considering there are three music themes that sound like Cirno's theme, I don't see any reason for exclusivity. Maybe Marisu's dress was also inspired by the Shinsengumi uniform with its pattern, or maybe it draws inspiration from Tinkerbell as she also has that kind of pattern.

I do wonder though. The Shinsengumi were commissioned by the Bakufu, so maybe calling Cirno a "baka" is some kind of complex Japanese pun calling her someone dispatched from the shadows that is stupid. The rabbit hole continues to go deeper.

I just think ZUN liked the pattern, though I do wonder what its symbolism is on its own; to me, the white triangles on blue always felt like they represented mountains?

Found something from December 1977. Icemaiden had lots of redesigns over the next 20 years, many of them with that same "triangle mountain" pattern on her outfit. I suppose they also could have been copying the shinsengumi uniform.

So I just did some more research, and apparently, that painting by Sergio Cirno Bissi didn't even show up on the internet until January 31st, 2026. It appears the middle name was a misspelling and it's actually "Cirino" which makes a lot more sense as Cirino is a name used in Italy.

At first, I thought this was a "baka" reference by the person who wrote the script for TTYD. As it turns out, the "BA-KAK" is most likely referencing the Ballistic Advantage (BA) barrel and the KAK Industry barrel, both barrels used for shooting things, and in this scene, the bomb-ombs are talking about shooting things with cannons.

...and then I did more research, and BA came out in 2008 and KAK came out in 2011.

Just how many rabbit holes have I plunged myself down this time?

Here is Haru Yoshioka (吉岡 ハル) alongside Yuki in the movie "The Cat Returns". Haru's outfit looks very similar to Cirno's. In Japanese, "yuki" means "snow". If you take the "ル" in Haru's name, you see it in Cirno's name (チルノ). If you take the "ハ" in Haru's name, you see a variation of it in "baka" (バカ).

"The Cat Returns" came out on July 20th, 2002, a little more than one month after EoSD's demo. However, they were running trailers of the movie a little while before the movie came out. Cirno's design first came out on March 22nd, 2002 with that "30000Hit!" image, but it's hard to tell which came first: That image, or the promotional material for The Cat Returns. Needless to say, more research needs to be done.

After further research, the manga for the movie came out on March 27th, 2002, just 5 days after >>24215924.

According to people who watched the DVD extra "The Making of The Cat Returns", the movie started out as a 20-minute short in 1999. The manga was also made in 1999. The manga was later transitioned into a storyboard, and extending the short to a full-length movie started taking place around late 1999 or 2000. This means that at the latest, the Haru character in the movie and her design were finalized some time in 2000, making her predate Cirno by about 1-2 years. I found zero connection between any of the writers, VAs, etc., of the movie and ZUN.

It's much more likely that ZUN just combined the blazer-style Japanese school uniform with the Japanese Shinsengumi Happi outfit and Haru's outfit looking similar is a coincidence.

This is from "Eguchi Hisashi no Kotobuki Gorou Show", a thing so obscure that it only has a Wikipedia article in Japanese. Also has a MAL article. It aired from May 1991 to November 1991, over 10 years before Cirno came out.

The girl on this cover was most likely modeled after Tomoyo Harada. This came out on March 23rd, 1984, only 1 day off from when Cirno's design was revealed. Probably a coincidence.
