>>10970640 Been to Otafest for years just due to it lining up with work schedule usually. This year I'm getting to Animethon instead, for the first time in like a decade
It irks me seeing Asian con photography "culture" increasingly being prevalent at my local cons. Cosplayers coming explicitly to just get a few photos or vids for social media then leaving, and photags with zero spatial awareness trying to camp parts of the con floor with some mid af setup. The latter is at least fine when theres a designated area, but I like my cons being more than a dim background for some thot's xiaohongshu post.
>>10970711 I'm not the type of person to talk up girls. Probably 80/20; like I'm not going to let a chance pass by if presented, but my main focus is just meeting people and talking. I've also just always wanted to cosplay at least once in my life.
>>10970634 .. you cross Canada and AN is the one you come to? I'm so sorry. This is the first year in almost a decade I'm going to attend AN and I already know it's going to be mid.
>>10970713 There's only a few cons worth going to in Canada if you're crossing the border and AN is one of them because it's the biggest in Canada and everyone goes.
>>10970718 I do feel bad for the kids. Everything they know is a reference, rip off, or throwback to something. Poor guys can't create their own style. Missed out on better times, and options for haircuts
>>10970713 Why not? Work schedule is 10/10 so I just pick cons that fit in with my off time. I've nothing against the states, but it would be preferable to stay within country for lower prices. Guess technically I have been to Sask and BC cons. Never anime Rev tho
>>10970715 Oooh I misread that as them being FROM Alberta. My dumb. But I was running on that, and crossing Canada for AN is rough when BC is a shorter trip for a better almost-everything. And shit for a slightly longer travel time you can get to Monteal for an also better set of cons. AN has proven size isn't everything for ages.
>>10970734 Oh don't get me wrong, you can and probably will have a good time. But as a local the idea of traveling any real distance for AN sounds disappointing.
>>10970749 You got it right first time. I am Alberta. It's something new. Tried both cons here, Sakuracon in Seattle which is like... 50k(?) people. I think I like the smaller 10k ones better, but I'm excited to try something in the middle. Party cons are always fun
>>10970778 dealers hall is slop and a swamp, they hate cosplayers so you'll be out on pavement most the time, the panels and events are all retarded but theres fun to be had with things like the truck party. Just avoid the normieslop rave at all costs.
Do I buy the full weekend pass or just the Saturday? Like will I be missing much by not attending on Friday? I live about a forty minute drive away so I'm not booking a hotel or anything.
>>10970784 If you aren’t planning on going to the con with friends and don’t have any intention to attend panels, what are you even going for? Friday and Saturday have the same stuff going on.
>>10970785 Nah, there are a few panels I want to see as well as VAer. I'm also meeting up with a friend on the Saturday. If there's nothing different on Friday then I won't bother though.
What’s the point of the truck or the grill? There’s no shortage of raves with sweaty, annoying guys, and you can grill with your own friends instead of the same. A friend wanted me to visit this con but after seeing the programming and the previous threads, Anime Revolution clears it easy.
>>10970629 I've never been to Anime North, and it's not happening this year, but I'm looking at maybe next year. How big is it? Is it "fuck, gotta book the room a year in advance" big?
Also, I'm thinking about doing a road trip, coming all the way up from Alabama. Should I enter Canada via Detroit or Buffalo? Kinda leaning towards Buffalo, but I'd like to hear the thoughts of people who have actually done this.
>>10970841 The hotels become available for booking around January, the big one (Delta) is booked out within the same day it becomes available or a day after. The rest are typically available for a month before being booked out.
>>10970697 eh it's loud and hard to talk to people. Honestly not sure how people make friends at cons other than pre planned online meetups and most of those have gone to shit years ago.
>>10970716 Kei Yuuki and Golden Boy. Kei is sadly a touch obscure, so I'm just gonna look like a crossdressing Goth loli in a cheaper outfit. Ah well, deal with it
>>10970903 Oh, is it more like a rave than a BBQ? I'm not sure how to make friends either; to meet people you have to go outside, but the kind of person you'd get along best with is the kind of person not going outside >>10970904 I've been called cute before, but I don't necessarily believe it... I like my personality though.
>>10970903 >most of those have gone to shit years ago. Most of those from HERE have gone to shit because the Ontario circle caused drama over the same few girls
The remaining people on the 'cord are either married, hanger-ons after being involved in the drama in one way or another, and people who don't know any better, which are all exactly the type of people you don't want to have an online meetup with
>>10970909 Are you female (male) or regular person. Is it pink?
Also, the truck rave is in the corner of the parking lot. Look for the grill. This year there will be two trucks going on if all goes well for the gulls. So you can easily make friends. Just approach people and strike up a conversation.
>>10970909 The rave is only on Saturday night. The truck(s) are going to be there from Friday to Sunday, so you can go and speak to the people there even outside of the rave.
>>10970916 I'm a boy, but I'd be cosplaying a girl if I can work up the nerve. Is what pink? If my assumption is right, yes...
Approaching people and striking up conversations is my main weakness as a human being. I can only work up the courage to go and hope something happens! >>10970919 If I go it'll be Saturday, so maybe I'll go before the rave in the afternoon.
>>10970943 I'm debating going as Okarun or Frieren. Both are simple enough, but one is a but more of a statement. And I didn't mind the question, no worries.
Walking up to people and not speaking until spoken to, I can certainly do!
>>10970945 It's a convention man. Talking to people is what it's for. Its the only time of the year you can guarantee that the weirdos around you can be on your level of autism.
>>10970949 It either grips like a retard with the class pet or is blown out like the subwoofers after a deathgrips song. Can't wait to find out which cutie.
>>10970950 What a crude description! >>10970951 One would be playing it safe and maybe give me an in to talk to girls, the other would be a big leap out of my comfort zone and maybe give me an in to talk to guys. So I don't know..
>>10970957 So you're trying to entrap young men by dressing up as Frieren huh? That's horrible. Someone needs to stop such behavior. And dole out an appropriate punishment
>>10970962 >Yet So that is your plan you filthy cadamite. Looks like my posse and I are gonna be on the lookout for an Okarun or Frieren to dole out justice upon and cleanse your evil nature that resides deep inside you. And we shall see how honest you've been thus far.
>>10970965 Posse?! Now I can't wear either outfit to the truck or I'll get jumped by a bunch of guys?! >>10970966 I don't know that it'll be good, just more eye catching than my normal self I suppose
>>10970967 Just talk to people dude you'll be fine. And make sure you cosplay isn't trash. Doesnt have ti be the best but put some effort in. Most autists get mad when they favorite characters are poorly done.
>>10970971 I don't see the correlation. It's just a bit of fun. >>10970972 I put in as much effort as I can, but I'm not a pro or a seamstress or anything. I just want to put enough effort in to not look out of place >>10970973 I'm a very normal guy, so I should easily pass this test!
>>10970909 >but the kind of person you'd get along best with is the kind of person not going outside I have left the house a grand total of 5 times this year.
>>10970908 >Golden Boy This is so very educational. Based anon. It's one of the few shows where I like the dub, granted the >eh basic? line in the original is great
>>10970697 Do you even like nerd stuff? If so, then you will probably find some people into the same thing in such a large con. It's up to you to go through the schedule and find events that appeal to you and the nerd stuff you like
>>10970778 bring an N95 mask for the dealer's hall and a water bottle for the heat, and a raincoat or umbrella for the rain. The con nightlife is actually pretty decent if you look around
>>10970841 The Detroit crossing has a reputation for surly and strict CBP officers, take Buffalo if you can. Canada Customs officers are much more chill overall if you don't do anything stupid.
Are there ANY other anime cons or meetups in the area throughout the year? I may not be able to make it this year but I want to cosplay and make friends
Any of the panels/workshops or whatever worth going to? There's one about making friends, and a surprising amount that are LGBTQ related (I'm not a fag) but it's hard to tell if any are worth going to.
>>10971166 There's no active scene on /cgl/ in Ontario anywhere anymore. You're late to the party by like a decade. You can still come meet us at the grill or you can go to the truck rave to meet the people there also from 4chan but if you're a zoom zoom, it'll be like visiting a retirement home either way.
>>10971207 /a/toronto managed vs /cgl/ managed respectively. The truck is a whole operation behind with a team. The grill is improvised and not really planed, just a place to chill at while the night falls.
>>10971228 Every Ontario con is worse than AN because they're much smaller and have less to do. Other Canada cons are comparable but you're not gonna find anything else in province.
>>10971228 You could dig up the old thread from the archives. Picture a tiny college did a con 10 years and had the audacity to try and charge people $40, that's around the level of guilty
>>10971232 AN has stuff to do but if you've gone to the convention more than a handful of times, you sorta settle into doing one of two things: going to the truck throughout the weekend to see what stupid shit the /a/toronto people are doing and/or making plans with the gulls before and after the grill.
The con hasn't changed much in well over a decade but the people that have been going there forever will say it's gotten worse because the panels are uninteresting to them, they don't care about the guests or events, the photoshoots are for stuff they don't care about, etc. You should stop taking everything this thread says as the be all end all for discussion about AN. It's the biggest convention in all of Canada for a reason.
>>10971236 They got two, the mom and daughter >>10971229 fan expo is also really good >>10971228 Its worse than comicon lol, but tbf, not many cons start off great >>10971252 This, some cosplayers just attend for the photoshoots they book
>>10971253 >fan expo is also really good it's not though, it sucks. If your intent is to go buy a bunch of garbage you can get online for cheaper, or stand in line for an hour to get the signature of some minor celebrity then sure, otherwise it's completely soulless and boring.
>>10971253 >fan expo >comicon Both of those are horrible, what the fuck? AN might not be anything to write home about but it's still better than those other cons.
>>10971262 Cause everything is slower. It was mentioned in /hap/ that because of this thread /cgl/ finally had a higher post per minute than 0 in a while. >>>/bant/24330678 If you're complaining about how slow this thread you wont find a faster one here
>>10971263 You're ignoring that every AN thread before this one has been much faster. Look at last years even, it's like double the speed of this. What happened?
hope 2 see u guys at the grill and truck saturday!! My cosplay is cheap aliexpress shlock but it'll do. Also, are there any panels that aren't gay and lame this year?
help a socially retarded anon out. Is it actually possible to meet people or make friends at AN (or any con)? Like, talking to people at a panel you (and presumably they, also) have an interest in?
>>10971337 Chances are low if you do actual con stuff if you're not cosplaying. If you go to the /cgl/ and /a/ shit, chances are higher since you can just say whatever stupid thing comes to mind and be in good company.
>>10971337 It's possible but very hard. It's easier if its a pre planned meetup for some fandom/online thing and you keep talking online after, but this thread has shown that most online places are a dumpster fire. You should try but not be disappointed if it doesn't work out.
how is this the only thread keeping this board alive? did every other province/state/country move to discord that happened for ontario too but the threads still aren’t dead
>>10971393 For the sake of this conversation we can assume that the answer is no (not a stretch).
Come on, I'm an autist going to an anime convention, you can't expect me to navigate years of drama between truck and official convention management, not to mention food safety and public drinking laws.
>>10971396 Just to be clear, this is not me (>>10971394) You gotta remember you're on 4chan. I get that I can go on saturday and just see what's up, that's great and next year I'll know better, but I could be dead by then and I'd rather just enjoy this year.
>>10970629 I wanted to make an actual cosplay, but I forgot about that and the con. Maybe I will get a ticket and go in this(I ironed the pleats after).
>>10971442 Idk, hang out at burgar king or harveys I guess. I haven't looked at the schedule online yet, I'll look at it when I pick up the book tomorrow to figure out if any panels seem worth attending. After an initial stroll through vendors and artists (probably not getting anything since it's all aliexpress trash anyway), aside from a few panels I mostly just talk with cosplayers and take some photos. That might get kinda fucked up with the rain but I'm sure it won't stop everyone. I'm also trying to get a gundam ready to put into the model contest but I'm really behind on that with only 2 days left.
I went with people for the first time last year, and prefer going on my own I think. It felt weirdly pressuring to like manage people and not just wander around doing nothing which is what I kind of prefer to do. With people I feel obligated to be talking to them rather than talking to con people. It doesn't help that the rest of the people are also introvert social retards (self included) who wouldn't interact with people unless forced. If I had a more outgoing friend group it would probably be better.
>>10971462 Anime has been mainstream since the mid 2010s. You are a dumbass if you think going to an anime convention means anyone has autism, it's been a normie thing forever. You have to go outside and talk to people if you go to a con to begin with.
>>10971477 You're allowed to go but know that everyone will be making fun of you behind your back, which means there's a lot of space to make fun of you.
>>10971476 Considering how well people treat me irl, it is crazy how racist people online are. Really goes to show that people on the internet aren't real.
>>10971477 Anon, like a good 20 percent of people at these things are overweight. Just shower and do basic hygiene. For next time, you could cosplay daru. You will only get judged on your appearance if you post an obnoxious photo of yourself
>>10971487 God your life must be sad if the concept of someone being treated nicely sounds unreal to you. I sincerely hope that things get better for you and you have the presence of mind to accept your blessings.
>>10971477 put the burger down starting now and let's see how presentable you can get before AN. >>10971482 All the “validation” you get is two-faced and half-hearted. Behind your back people mock you. Your parents are disgusted and ashamed of you, your “friends” laugh at your ghoulish appearance behind closed doors. Men are utterly repulsed by you. Thousands of years of evolution have allowed men to sniff out frauds with incredible efficiency. Even trannies who “pass” look uncanny and unnatural to a man. Your bone structure is a dead giveaway.
>>10971492 Sorry but I'm just a pleasent person to interact with in real life and have been graced by the kindness of strangers all my life, and I do my best to return that kindness in turn. I can't claim to know what you have gone through until now, but I hope that you find people who can understand and comfort you.
>>10971498 The jungle is gatekept by gorillas who think just because your skin is smooth and pale you can't have fun as a vine-swinging simioid. It's 2026 and we've had enough, monkeying around is for everyone!
I'm gonna be going out as Michael Myers if he was a Naruto character (I.e. headband and Jonin vest atop the mask and coveralls).
I'm thinking of using the Sound Village headband because Myers and Orochimaru both share they same fashion sense of stolen clothes and the opening notes of Orochimaru's theme sounds like the opening notes of the Halloween theme, but slower and played on orgasm.
>>10971505 >tfw most anons aren't old enough to remember the Great Ape Wars Literally Tarzanning is both timeless and universal, and we're gonna bring it back this year
>>10971532 Not if you’re a cosplayer wearing multiple layers and a long wig…somehow my timing always messes up and I’m wearing a short and lightweight cosplay on the coldest day and a thicker cosplay on the one hot day
>>10971477 Depends on what you describe as "fat", cos some people (girls) will say they're fat even though they're like an 9/10 with the curves, or guys saying they're fat when built like a fucking viking. Just shower and use deodorants and you'll be fine. All about *presentation*.
>>10971611 Always a fucking wash to even bother with Nominoichi half the time because of the lineup.
>>10971633 >guys saying they're fat when built like a fucking viking This sounds very copey. If anything I would suspect it's fat neckbeard guys who claim to be built like vikings just because they're 'big' and have a horribly kempt beard.
>>10971650 Convenience stores should have some small selection these days. Otherwise your best bet for a decent selection is probably the LCBO at martin grove and the westway. It's not super close but like a 15 minute walk maybe, just south of the con.
This might be the worst AN weather in YEARS The last time it rained, it was still warm and when it stopped, the sun came out That's not happening today
>>10971732 >I don't understand why the organizers didn't predict what the weather would be and make reservations for the Toronto Congress Centre based on that yeah it's a mystery
>>10971733 I think anon is less focusing on the weather and more the long weekend, which would've coincidentally had better weather. But I'd imagine that the long weekend is more expensive or was already booked
>>10971736 It's not like this cont hasn't been running for over 20 years If the long weekend was an option, they'd have taken it but that's a logistical nightmare and probably cost a fortune
I'm not sure I wanna go in today since I need to go on sunday anyway I'm not even THAT far, but I really should just get a hotel room next year, driving in every day is a pain. But I think the delta sells out like immediately, if I remember last year you couldn't book rooms yet a full year in advance, but by the time you could and I checked it was already booked up.
Didn't know Midnight Matsuri section was a thing until this year, was it always there? Why is that yearly hentai doujin seller still outside of it then?
>moderate rain but horrible winds outside my house living 50 miles away, looks like I picked a decent year to skip. >>10971740 If there was a decent train stop in mississauga from the convention center I would never have to debate about going to AN. fuck driving through toronto.
>>10971754 I'd be surprise by someone willing to make an additional stop three times and so far away unless I was already on their path. I only put up with driving because I get a hotel when I go. If there was a good train stop I wouldn't even bother with the hotel and save $100 or 3
>>10971771 I don't necessarily attend many of the major panels, but the ones I do are pretty mid so attendance doesn't surprise me. I don't think they're out of whack with the quality of most other conventions, but still. If you're interested in getting like the most basic possible onboarding into some topic they might be good, but otherwise they're almost more show-and-tell than a real presentation in my opinion.
>>10971771 could be selection bias, since im sure some panels/shows were max capacity. plus since the weather was super bad, there were more people inside than previously. normally people would be roaming about outside
>>10971776 probably the one who had an entire infographic made about her and caused multiple people from here to stop attending events or speaking to others
>>10971811 >>10971816 No one is posting anything because the weather was fucking awful and there is fuck all to do at the convention proper. The only reason the AN threads are as alive as they are is because of Sneed's Seed and Feed grill/truck and the /a/toronto truck. if you want pictures of either of those, wait until the people that attended either sober up or wake up..
>>10971818 >if you want pictures of either of those, wait until the people that attended either sober up or wake up kek, anon there's no reason to pretend that the thread will be busier, we all know it won't be.
>>10971816 last night the djs who had their sets cancelled for the "official" rave due to the rain played by the hotel under the parking complex.. It was fucking cold but ended up being pretty fun desu
>>10971811 This happened last year as well when I paid attention to the thread. I assume people that are actively at the con aren't going to choose to post in the thread out of all the things they could be doing.
>>10971853 Pretty much this. You can sometimes spot those who lurk in the boards, even those thatt(rightfully) try to hide their power level. Lots of normal friends though, like a lot more than last years...
>>10971008 >>10971867 I’m starting to think you’re either hideous or socially stunted, there’s a lot of cute girls I got numbers from at the truck, did you even try talking to anyone
>>10971873 I'm both hideous and socially stunted. That's why I why I need the truck to hire the cute girls to have sex with me. I don't want to talk to them.
>>10971888 summer bbq meetup is coming up soon™. i guess people also go to american cons and otakuthon. yeticon and anime fiesta are happening next month also.
Well I had fun. Sucks this con is so weather dependant. But the truck, and the BBQ and shit were fun. Hard to recommend tho, hotel cost way too much for how good it wasn't, and I can't say there was anything overly special another con hasn't done. Well the battlebots thing was pretty damn cool.
Gotta advertise for Animethon now. It's been a beast every time I've gone.
>>10971873 >socially stunted Sir, where do you think we are? Not that most of the posts in this thread aren't retarded, but the moment most of this aite is socially competent I am leaving this site
>>10971746 Nah, was never a thing before this year.
Was really just for Artist Alley vendors who wanted to sell 18+ stuff, so doujinshi seller didn't have to be in there.
Was organized like dogshit anyways, I talked to multiple vendors there and most of them were told last minute about it, guidebook didn't properly advertise them, and didn't even get their correct names for all of the booths.
>>10971909 >artist alley for 18+ stuff Immediate TOTAL COWARD territory if they don't allow shota/loli content, even if shota/loli content is not 18+ Yeah thats me and the bros going in next time if there are 18+ sholi allowed.
>>10971909 >>10971910 >>10971746 Yeah, was very lame and sparse inside but hope it grows in the future as more people become aware of it for next year. Even better to force the doujin guy in there, annoying to have to card everyone and could have more stuff maybe too and it might give it more publicity that way too.
Why does everyone come here expecting there to be new people to recruit into their circle? It's a safe bet that almost every post in this thread is by someone already in the discord, or someone from the /a/ group, and you all know each other already, so what's the point of coming here to pretend you don't know you're talking with each other? Unironically, wouldn't Reddit or AN forums be a better place to find new people or do you not want to interact with people who aren't terminally online?
>>10971932 I am not in the Discord. I don't know what the /a/ group is. I don't know what subreddit to check. I don't know what AN forums are. This is all I know. I just want friends.
>>10971943 The "/a/ group" is the /a/toronto guys who organize the main truck event with the Japanese DJs. I believe they've been active for 15+ years.
>I am not in the Discord. The invite link is right above. You can check it out and leave if it's not your vibe. I know they are looking for more cosplayers and lolita to equalize the chud atmosphere of that server.
>I don't know what AN forums are AN forums are dead with the exception of the Nominoichi board. The official AN discord is where you can get the most information nowadays.
>>10971947 >>10970629 Too whoever gets the DJs get this Jap rave idol group for next year please. The manager guy speaks English and they've actively asked if there's any events they can do in Canada. https://x.com/pinponpanponyay
>>10971943 >I don't know what subreddit to check. I don't know what AN forums are. Then you are literally retarded and that would explain why you don't have friends.
>>10971954 If it's the white guy with the hat with the letters EXO, then yea, I think he's part of the truck organizers. I've seen him in previous years.
>>10971950 Hey, unrelated anon, but what do you think about having the idol group come to Otakuthon in Montreal instead. I think the convention can host the 10 idols + manager more easily than AN and staff related.
>>10971974 IRC is incredible! I'm always amazed how it's still around despite having chat channels for everything and tons of file sharing rooms that have existed for decades. Yet, somehow no one ever seems to care to shut them down. >>10971973 Interesting that it's an unlisted channel, about like 10 people there at the moment.
>>10971994 The girls, excluding Kroggy, left years ago. A few have already been mentioned in this thread but look at this from 8 years ago. This was already after a lot of the female seagulls left.
Anybody else get sick? I swear I went into artist alley for 5 minutes on friday and I caught a cold because it was already manifesting by saturday night.
>>10972055 I did enjoy the brown girl, who I think was trying to do like a futaba cosplay with her orange head scarf. Her screaming at everyone all weekend was pretty funny.
Does anybody go to AN to meet or get autographs from people? I swear the tables for VAs and all that are always dead whenever I've been around that area.
>>10972050 >>10972005 >>10971689 Can't believe I'm aware of all this deep lore even though I never attended a meetup, only walked by a few every now and then over the years. I do be always checking this thread though around the week of the con.
>>10972086 The only people in this picture that are still around are the bald guy on the left, the guy wearing glasses in the kigurumi, and the guy wearing glasses behind the Touhou cosplayer and all of those people have stuck around because they don't cause problems.
>>10972102 I can't tell what's more pathetic, that you put that shutterstock number on there thinking anyone would actually search it or that you had to tell people to search it after the fact
This was my second year going. Have I been missing out on anything by not checking out these threads before, during, and after? Do people care to hear how it went on my end?
>>10971746 Not none, but there was a notable lack of 2D dicks in this area. One stand in particular, and I think the guy by the exit had some 2D men?
Thanks for taking a commission of mai husbando on my behalf, whatever your based name was by the exit. I don't know the details of what who was with me asked for on my behalf (no spoilers please!), but I look forward to it and will love it regardless, because he's mai husbando. I likely have your card sitting somewhere, but if you aren't posting it online (yet? - so I can keep it a surprise), I'll follow you on wherever you post.
Or if any anon could point me to where he posts.
>>10971994
I'm not the true and honest CWC you met Mr. Ian Brandon Anderson, but I've got some photos of you and solid Guitar Hero CWC if you want them.
>>10972123 You don't really miss anything by ignoring the threads. If you go to the /a/ truck or the /cgl/ truck, you see all that these threads have to offer outside of everyone's individual experiences at the con, which, for this year, was probably not that exciting due to the rain.
>>10972123 these threads are totally dead, so no you aren't missing anything. This thread will probably still be live by the time next year's convention starts despite already having reached bump limit.
>>10972139 /cgl/ as a board is totally dead. If you want to discuss cosplay, this is legitimately one of the worst places to do it because anonymity doesn't add anything.
Guys, we need to keep this thread alive. We can get to 1000 replies before it gets archived. Just turn this into the Southern Ontario and Otakuthon thread.
Did the grill truck get their alcohol dumped out by jannies too? I saw them start doing it to the rave truck but then after they dumped a couple someone came and took the cooler back from them
