As a tourist lurking, the lack of talking and shipping discourse in these threads is impressive compared to
other HS threads.
I would also expect some Fujosh-ing, or Flaming Gayness but there isn't much to be seen.

Despite visiting threads and looking at art of the series, I never actually read Homestuck. What is the connection between these four? There seems to be enough art made of them in existence that they have formed their own quartet in certain spaces.

Dave is genetically related to Dirk and John is genetically related to Jake. The four of them are not born from natural reproduction but are paradoxes themselves. Thirteen-year-old John and Dave are from the same timeline while fifteen-year-old Jake and Dirk are from another. The guardian that adopts Dave is an alternate version of Dirk and the brother Dirk knows is Dave's alternate version. During the course of Homestuck people from different timelines meet one another. Dirkjake is canon at one point or another. They're a quartet because they're male main characters that are humans and biologically related as opposed to the trolls.
