In another timeline Scott harnessed the power of his webcomic and kept on with reg updates. When the internet grew bigger, a whole new generation started to get into VG Cats. Then he starts making little animated shorts....that balloons into a pilot, and then, maybe a short web series. And it's all great and he makes alot of money

I remember he had merch made of a plush Leo once, those are likely very rare now to find now. I don't think he followed up with a Aries plush.

I think getting married, having kids, and divorced really fried Scott's brain. Go maybe he was always mentally a little off. I dunno. It's just sad how he was in the perfect spot with his webcomic right at the dawn of webcomics and fumbled it massively.

I'm bringing GamerCat up because this is the video game cat comic I read during the 2010s while you guys were reading VGCats in the 2000s.

What I find interesting is that when you start to read either one you can immediately notice how dated they are and what era of the web they were raised in. VGCats was created when Flash was the tool of choice for art and the web was more decentralized. Think fan sites, GeoCities, and discussion forums. A lot of the early strips have that amateur pseudo-anime feel attached to them, clearly made by an artist that loves anime and manga but doesn't have all the fundamentals figured out yet to do the style justice.

GamerCat, on the other hand, was very clearly created when fandom as a whole was just barely making it into the mainstream. Tumblr was the choice for blogging about it and YouTube was the choice for vlogging about it. The concept of the internet artist was beginning to take shape and this is apparent from how clean the comic's art is from the start, built from all digital art knowledge shared on DeviantArt during the previous decade. You can literally see a bunch of gaming and lolcat trends come and go throughout the comic's run going from 2011 all the way to 2020, where it has since remained on an indefinite hiatus.

They both have a naivety attached to them that's hard to describe. Like, the internet was this sort of new medium at the time and there was a belief that there were unknowable opportunities to be discovered and unlimited potential with it's dynamic multimedia nature. It feels so long ago and distant now.

Remember when Scott came to 4chan and drew a couple of requests in a VG Cats thread? I wonder if he checks the archive for mentions of his name and comic.

I always liked GamerCat and thought its where VGCats could have been content wise had Scott not bailed on regular updates by the time GamerCat came out. It was nice to have another comic about cats and vidya and I liked the art and jokes...but it made me mourn what VGCats had become by then.

The fact VGCats still get threads on /co/ once in a while, a series created by Scott fucking 25 years ago, is amazing to me. For a webcomic that never went beyond anything than being a webcomic. These characters have some sort of hypnotic pull to the fans that knew them. Maybe it ties into a happier moment in time, like what was talked about earlier in thread about the internet being a better place back then. I miss seeing silly VGCats comics shared on Livejournal. I just want to go back to a simpler time. Before everything sucked. Before Scott got old and lost his marbles.

With time as Gen Y gets older, less and less will remember VGCats and this era of internet. Be happy if you were there, all I can say. Eventually VGCats will be look at as a footnote in Internet history.
