A little late to the party but what's the general consensus on the movie? I though the animation was gorgeous but wasn't a fan of Airbender Broly.

Bryke are really similar to those dime-a-dozen anime writers who make anime originals that fall apart on act 3. They run on vibes and what they think seems cool, shooting from the hip and just running with it
>>
The animation is excellent, genuinely one of the best looking things to come out of the West in a long time - it is then basically wasted on everything else.
- The original voice actors were replaced with noticeably poor diversity replacements. Considering how they are both available and all capable of returning to their roles, as well as a core component of what defined their characters, this is basically unforgivable. There's no excuse, Paramount are either just garden variety white-haters, or simply needed a reason to not pay voice actors a fair wage for reprising a legacy role.
- It's a boring mcguffin quest of a plot, generic and uninteresting. Things happen that are stupid because there's a magical excuse for it.
- Bad lore/worldbuilding that fails to avoid cheapening the world, but this is par for the course at this point. Everything "added" to ATLA seems to just take away.
- Inconsistencies with established worldbuilding, but again this seems to just be the standard at this point, people love going into this "beloved" franchise and then immediately ignoring the sanctity of any established continuity.
- Aang is, essentially, a bumbling idiot despite the fact we know he was capable and resourceful as a child. In his prime, he would be basically Superman. He's not going to have trouble dealing with a bunch of normal humans nor would pacifism make him incapable of stopping them. Other characters are similarly lobotomised despite being obviously wiser now - the plot can't be bothered to justify a strong opposing antagonist so just settles for making the protagonists stupid.
It's just another thing that fails to understand what makes ATLA good or can see any means of revisiting the story in a way that recontextualises anything meaningfully, let alone doing so in a way that isn't actively damaging something special about the original. It's a modern sequel. If not for the production quality, it would be barely worth a mention.

I came back to /co/ today for the first time in years because I heard about the avatar leak. Around 2014/2015 I fantasized so much about continuing the series. I was thrilled to hear about paramount picking it up a few years ago after people realized how many people still adored avatar when Netflix started streaming the series during covid. After hearing about how paramount handled the leak and pics from the new series, I am incredibly disappointed but not surprised. I will be watching the movie that got leaked. I feel horrible for the animators that put their souls into the movie, just to have it leaked and dropped from a theatrical release. The new series looks like it’s doing way too much. Post apocalyptic world is so over done. Late 20th century earth bender would have been so much better.
>>
>>153254674
Animation's more a mixed bag, imo. It's decent in some parts, but others make it clear why it was shunted onto streaming as what makes a TV show work doesn't really translate into theatrical results. Most TV-to-Movie adaptations have that problem.
As for
>The original voice actors were replaced with noticeably poor diversity replacements. I am convinced it's them trying to pander to the DEI crowd. Which would be fine, but a little annoying, if they didn't simply think "All Asians look alike" when recasting Zuko, the other Fire Nation individuals or the Cabbage Merchant (seriously, why wasn't James Sie brought back at least?). And tried a little harder with the rest of the picks. Everything else is part and parcel for the franchise after the original series ended.
I do have to wonder something about the casting though. Is this bad, or worse than the casting in the live-action movie? Because honestly, I think that might be MORE offensive in how incompetent that was.

How is it a given? Nobody knows who Flying Bark is, unless you work in the creative industry in Sydney, so I’m assuming you’re a Flying Bark employee.
Flying Bark is literally not known for anything. And also, something like 10 different studios worked on this, Flying Bark mostly helped with the 3DCG.

>set up ideas and situations that seem cool or interesting when introduced

A pattern that pummeled LoK and many animated series
>>
>>
>>153256317
But Lok is not like that, Lok just swings up and down in quality, never passing a certain standard and in terms of original anime there are very few with that many episodes(and those are usually pretty good) as lok. Also it’s not just Bryke, Dante screwed up as well.
>>
>>
>>153256459
LoK's sectioned arcs where the 4 main villains each got 1 season for their story and were not in contact with each other follow the failure of follow through after a cool idea brought in interest. S1 and S4 as the most clear examples

At least their relationship worked in this. I think the issue with the original was that Aang was simply too childish so the romance wasn't really believable. But now he's a bald chad.

>Bad lore/worldbuilding
I try to give them the benefit by treating this movie like one of those shonen anime movies where it clearly isn't canon, just a side story meant to be enjoyed, but they insist on treating it as a bridge to korra. It's odd that they cant introduce new lore to avatar that fits the tone of the original show, and that it feels so fanfiction-ish.
And it's silly watching aang in his prime fumble throughout the movie because not only should he be much stronger than the child version of the main series but also wiser, but he was as naive as a child throughout and had to learn lessons even the kid him would've already known
>>153254816
The thing I don't get is why they replaced Dante as zuko's VA. Hes asian, but not Japanese enough to play Japanese-inspired fantasy race. But the new guy oddly enough is Korean? But the new guy is currently a trending actor, so it feels like it was just an executive choice to pick a guy who was more "mainstream" than someone that the fans actually like. But at the same time they fell in line to the new "characters can only be voiced by their race"

This is partly the case. It most certainly is so with Mae Whittman, as she's still very active in voice acting. It's definitely odd in the case of Dante Basco, as he was one of the few asians from the original cast. But with Aang, Toph and Sokka's VAs, it was absolutely unavoidable as all three have long since retired from the entertainment industry so they had to be recast.

>But with Aang, Toph and Sokka's VAs, it was absolutely unavoidable as all three have long since retired from the entertainment industry so they had to be recast.
All of three of them wanted to come back, and jack desenna absolutely is still active. Zach had retired from VA work but a fan spoke to him in the con scene, which zach is now really active in. allegedly he wanted to come back for aang again barring a few other projects he was working on. and it's become abundantly clear mae stepped aside for PR reasons.
>>

>>153257895
>But with Aang, Toph and Sokka's VAs, it was absolutely unavoidable as all three have long since retired from the entertainment industry
You're straight up making shit up. Sokka's VA has work as recently released as last year and has more releases slated for the future including reprising his role in Dragon Prince, pretty sure he would have reprised Sokka for one movie considering he's doing the same thing for another movie that hasn't even come out yet.
Toph's VA doesn't work as much anymore but like Sokka's VA has done work within the last year (and this movie was in production longer than a year). Not only that but one of her voles was for a fucking gacha game, I highly doubt she's only taking really important roles that speak to her or some shit, it's probably just she doesn't really need the money but again, I'm sure she would have done 1 movie if the price was right.
Aang's voice actor would also probably do the role if asked even though he doesn't do much voice work. He likely doesn't do much voice work moreso because he can't get work anymore because unlike the rest of the cast he doesn't have an established career as a VA, he was a child star.
Its clear this was done for PR reasons and MAYBE price reasons. None of this is even touching the reality that many of them already came back and played their characters as adults in Korra with only Aang being a new actor and they didn't ask him to come back either. If cowards want to do this racist casting shit they should do it proudly, they should disown the past work as unacceptable because if you won't its clear this is about pandering, money and imaginary woke points moreso than making good art. None of them will though because they want to have their cake and eat it too. They want to still do their Toph voice impressions on Fiver while also not calling out the casting director as passing on hiring them because of their races.

I'm a simple man. I want ONE thing from the animation industry. I want a good looking 2D action cartoon. I'm at the point where I've even lowered by standards for writing and storytelling, literally just dial back the crappy romance drama and I'm happy.
For whatever reason, a good looking action cartoon is hard to come by. If it's not from Genndy Tartakovsky then it's quietly airing on a streaming service and won't get recognition until it's about to end, and if it's not that then it's an occasional 2 minute gag from Gumball or Teen Titans Go. I thought them changing the voice actors was stupid, and I've watched every clip I've seen on mute (because I've only seen it on twitter where every video starts off muted, and blueboard 4chan where there's no audio), but it's got the one thing I constantly ask for; great fight scenes, so wherever it officially drops on, I'll watch.

I was a little skeptical to believe the whole VA shit but I guess this AMA confirmed it. Even if one or two of the original VAs weren't available they didn't even consider the rest because they wanted "authentic" casting. This is so hilariously racist it borders on comedy. Also funny how this only works one way too.
Glad I pirated it.
>>
>>
>>153257666
>But at the same time they fell in line to the new "characters can only be voiced by their race"
That's the problem though, they didn't. Toph is the only Asian in the film to be voiced by someone of their intended race, Zuko's supposed to be Japanese-based like the rest of the Fire Nation. By that logic, it should be a Japanese-American actor in the role, not Invincible. But I assume, like Bautista's casting, Yeun was brought in for name value (would also explain why Ken Jeong was cast as the cabbage merchant too).
Like I said, by trying to fix the problem, they made it worse.

I'm not worked up at all, if anything made me mad when making that post its that the guy I was responding to was straight up lying to make his point. That does make me mad when people do it in any conversation. I also disagree, I actually feel like we're already seeing push back on this and some VAs are starting to realize it actually makes it much harder for them to get work, including people in the groups that were intended to be helped by this attitude. I have no issue calling out a liar and pointing out why this whole situation is stupid because I actually think realistically over time people are going to move away from being so stringent in matching this shit because it also just becomes less and less viable as time goes on.

Toph was nice in this movie, big bonus is the massive influx of more art of her though if you're a lolifag it's a curse because the vast majority is probably just gonna be Adult Toph from now on
Also the Avatar-verse is one of the few franchises where you see a character either born blind or go blind and immediately think about how much of an upgrade that might be for them, like 2 out of the 4 elements could give you an amp when you're blind with tremor sense and that air current shit airbenders can do, if an Avatar went blind would that mean they just get Daredevil-tier radar sense by being able to sense all the elements around them at once?

Dante is both asian and has a fanbase. You'd think casting his return would be a no-brainer but they skipped him for Invincible. I doubt Dante is busy with other roles and would've liked to reprise the role again for a quick paycheck.

If how the process worked is similar to the past iirc, the choreography planning, storyboarding, and fight animatics would've been done at Avatar Studios under supervision of the director (for this movie, Lauren Montgomery) for how important it is. Then the hired animation studios turn all that planning work and the given instructions into the finished on model animation.
No idea if Bryke wanted them to lean into Dragonballz and modern action anime trends for marketability or something, but yeah the powerscaling has jumped around wildly after AtLA

>Airbender Broly
Audible kek. I liked his character and motivation, but the genie form was weird, along with Aang getting it, and then being able to conveniently undo everything by breaking the staff.
Aang's voice-acting was a bit bad, and the part where he briefly got his kid form back really didn't fit with the older-sounding voice.
What the fuck was that spirit warthog segment? Somebody tried to get too Disney.

You're intentionally not mentioning that they brought back Wendee Lee for the second cour where Yoruichi had a much large role. The only one who was really effected by racial casting was that Chad's actor didn't want to play him again, which isn't that surprising since he barely talks.

I finally got to watch it tonight and honestly as many have said before it's a movie that should have come out 10 years ago. If this movie came out around the time korra ended or was still on going when they first hinted at a gaang older movie. This thing would have done gangbusters and been a great conclusion, I could feel moments where the kid in me wanted to love this movie and just enjoy it. Even the ending song and little moments and final image of the squad together again does pull a bit at my heartstrings but korra and years of bs internet rants and the creators fucking stuff up with the comics and books and other lore drops really makes me jaded sadly. If this movie came out and nothing else I think it'd be more widely accepted for the flaws.
Now when it comes to the movie itself it has many flaws probably most glaring is fact they need to connect it to korra. So they introduce the non benders but they just don't work. Like that one scene
>I'M NOT LIKE YOU I'VE SUFFERED TO MUCH
I saw this and was like bitch, you are talking to the last surviving water bender of the southern tribe who fought in a war to free the world. Like in what world would they already have a terrorist group of non benders, after they were all just oppressed. It'd make more sense if it were a terrorist group of "fire haters, or fire supremacists" as the comics did. Also another thing is aang doesn't feel like he'd grow up to be the "bad dad" aang, he literally learns that his culture might never revive but he can teach the world and everyone is his family. Then somehow abaddons his non bender son and water bender daughter it makes it make even less sense now.
One of the few saving graces is that it's definitely better writing than korra, it's a fairly good movie but comes off a fantastic series. So the dip is noticable plus they have to connect it to korra which limits them as well. An the voice cast feel like they are catching up to the old cast or are out of practice.
>>
>>153254856

>>
>>153263719
Benders have more job opportunities. It’s dumb, but that’s what the Bryke-approved comic went with. And there was a large uprising of Bending supremacists in proto-Republic City. Aang didn’t abandon his kids, they’re just bitter childless fags. His daughter even admitted she couldn’t remember and didn’t care about Air Nomad stuff.
>>
>>153263719
Eh the Equalists weren't too much later. In reality it was mostly just another group hungering for power and using "muh benders" as an excuse. The second they became benders they (outside of the one good one) used it to fuck over others and be assholes.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>153263719
>One of the few saving graces is that it's definitely better writing than korra
I feel like the writing is on a similar level, but the ATLA characters being more enjoyable to watch and more cohesive as a group (even with how little they get to interact in this movie) than the Korra characters makes the writing somewhat more palatable.

The problem is that it's just stupid, the thing is the "denied" really are just like equalist they are just made to fill a antagonist/grunt quota and never are anything deeper. They imply they are willing to die for this not just a random power grab but instead they all just get tossed aside literally they didn't learn anything from Amon and the equalist. The denied are especially stupid as the avatar best friend is a non bender and the world just got past a super fucked century of war. Why would anyone hate the avatar it's a bit naive they are a massive terrorist group with tons of soldiers and assets in only the span of like 8-10 years. Most peopel would just be enjoying the peace after a literal century of fear and anxiety.
The one good one was cute though.Damn why do I want to draw a joke about her getting "Bended"
>>153263760
True also weird they'd try to ruin aang the nicest person in the world. Him being a bad dad with just the old lore was almost jarring but him being a bad dad after a whole arc about true connection being friends and familes and everyone is worth connecting with. EXCEPT MY KIDS OF COURSE KEK! It's just a weird justaxposition for the main character
I forgot they have Korra comics, also kind of forgot that they did all that bs. But really At this point in the series they really shouldn't as the reason they did in the korra comics was because of stuff like the furnaces and lightning bending, but really most jobs like farming and crafts wouldn't be bender exclusive and at this point they are pre industrial still so things like farming and basic stuff would be fundamental. I can see them having more jobs but it'd be more ones that go to their skills not like some weird boys club as even benders aren't all instantly great. Many people are average tier benders who can barely conjure water and what not. Plus having a water healer is good but so is a normal doctor. Bryke really make it obvious they need the trio
>>
>>
>>153263913
Kinda but different goals. The Equalists didn't want to become benders. They wanted to bring Benders down to their level by removing their power while The Denied were trying to treasure hunt a magic mcguffin that would essentially give them superpowers which they would then use to be assholes. The Equalists (outside of Amon) at least seemed to genuinely believe in their ideal, especially when benders tended to behind bullshit in Republic City and beyond.
>>
>>153263913
>The denied are especially stupid as the avatar best friend is a non bender
Would've been funny if they just told Aang from the start that they were looking for a magic staff that was capable of giving them bending and Aang just said great, I'll take you there and turn you all into airbenders if you want it.
>>
>>153263839
True you aren't wrong it's just the korra squad are ass lol. Korra has either fucked or cucked them.....................Holy fuck korra has cucked her whole squad
>Teases and leads Bolin on to get closer to his brother
>Pretends to have amnesia to get back with mako knowing he's dating asami
>Gets with Asami and actively is a dick to mako in the comics
No wonder why she's memed as Whorra, god people will really say she's the "better written" character.
Yeah why I did mention childhood nostalgia bias, but really korra squad is just trash. The gaang just fundamentally work well but another flaw is they feel a bit one note here though it is a movie so can't ask for too much. But it really feels like a missed opportunity to have Sokka do more, since well, the secondary antagonists were non-benders, and thought they were finally going to take it seriously when they set up making them all non-benders, unlike Amon stuff. Then we also have sokka being discriminated against for being useless in the gaang by the kid saying "what can a non bender do" but then that went no where.

And why the fuck is that buff air bender the first one to use the fucking air ball in this? That's Aang's signature technique and he hasn't used it once so far.

>>
>>153263972
Be funny, also weird that the power instantly makes you evil. Because it's implied the other benders were fine and so was he at first. I also do think the staff being bad proves you made a bad mcguffin. Bryke basically made a way to revive the airbenders and it at least was a bit better than muh spirit world took 2 centuries to fix itself. Still dumb but at least we know the lion turtles can teach bending and energy bending, but nope it makes you le evil benders.
>>153263962
See but their in lies the flaw, the denied imply they suffered a lot and that they had genuine gripes. Then as soon as they got powers they said fuck it powers are peak and started killing/maiming everyone. I think it's more irksome because bryke did the same thing with amon it feels like they want to touch on the non bender thing but that takes writing skills. They instead make them just le evil or give up as soon as they fail and never talk about the actual gripes or concept. But the problem is don't bring up the concept if you don't have the balls to touch on it, like the white fang in rwby. Why create fantasy racism which now makes us have to question your world, I never questioned benders and non benders til korra made me think on it.
Also think just feels like they flopped twice with a interesting thought process and didn't do anything but make them "le evil grunts" for the bigger bad bender proving they don't even think non benders could be a big bad.
>>
>>
>>
why would you write a plot featuring physical combat with a goddamn fully realized avatar? There is no way to make it good without severe nerfs, which are stupid since the Avatar is the peak of the human power scale by several tiers. At least throw a bunch of deception or spirits in there
>>
>>153264070
>why the fuck is that buff air bender the first one to use the fucking air ball in this? That's Aang's signature technique and he hasn't used it once so far.
oh boy I can't wait for them to say aang actually didn't invent the technique, it was an ancient lost technique and he merely independently rediscovered it. i love it when they make a retcon that trashes on established heroes to hand-way away a meta-narrative mistake
>>
>>
>>
>>153264153
they want the dbz audience. Korra did this too by continually nerfing the avatar state, which they can’t do here.

>Damn why do I want to draw a joke about her getting "Bended"
Because you have good taste, and you should do so. You should drop it in the /aco/ avatar thread if and when you do so; there's almost always one up.
>>
It felt more like a shounen anime episode than it did an Avatar-verse movie. I was hoping for better fight scenes, probably the only exciting fight was Team Avatar vs Taga, all other fights was just sad given the only people who were actually skilled were the main people in the Deniers
The greatest tragedy is that the movie didn't end with pregnant Katara or Toph
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>153264381
Honestly also makes way more sense why he can out do aang, as he was a fully realized airbender who fought in war and also grew up and lived a whole life in the culture. Zaheer was just a schizo that believed chaos was better cause muh no avatar somehow won't just make another 100 year war.

>most of that is viewpoint(sic?) panning to make the simple actions look "dynamic"
that's point for point what good animation is; doing more with less. would you rather watch luffy go looney-toon with tons of needless over-animated frames that only confuse the issue and overload the audience's attention (and hardly serve the plot)?
it's also the almost lost art (in anime) of proper scene sequencing. throughout the animation clip as a whole you are (almost*) never left wondering what's happening, where's it's happening, and what it's happening to. the cuts are quick, but didn't (mostly) disorient me and served to emphasize the speed and skill of toph, which i assume was the whole point of the scene; she's still a master bender, and still revels in her superiority, but she hasnt become greedy and paranoid- she has students, she's still just a little narcissistic and a bully/lives for a fight.
(*except for the double attack at the end; that was an example of them dropping the ball, the earth-wedge attacks and the guy who jumps with two staffs just freezes for a lifetime; someone in the air shouldn't be 'frozen' compared to someone on the ground. felt lazy at that specific point, and that lazy animation hurt the scene management and confused the flow of action... but this isn't 1990 or 2000, getting 70-80% of your scene to this level is worlds better than most animation action slop).
i dont know about the rest of the movie, i'm just here because i'm vaguely curious (so it's cool they seem to have decent 'camera work' in the animation, but ultimately fuck the people who took avatar and turned it into korra).
>>
>>
>>153264568
also, i watched the scene again, and i had this sudden feeling of visceral horror re-watching that last scene that put me off. i think that wedge that looks 100% like a triangular slab of earth doesn't just vanish like some ai-sloppa, it's supposed to be the very obviously (and much thinner) square of metal that then whips around and folds up staff boy. legit felt like an ai sequence, which is really fucking sad if it was ai assisted, and even worse if artists are starting to copy ai's mistakes. i don't know. the first 70% was done so well, and the arguement it's just a few actual frames is really refuted by how well toph is animated in the fore and background- she's never shown motionless, she's always moving... which is sad because as someone else above claimed is true for the whole movie-- there's basically no martial arts.
reading these posts is causing my instinct to scream that this movie is as bad as korra, but in a more subdued and less noticeable way (and insidiously playing on nostalgia. i find myself wanting to see the adult gang get to interact even now, for no good reason).
>>
>>153264568
Watch vigin punk, it had preatty great sequencing sequencing. The problem with that fight is that it’s not how Toph actually fights. Watch any of the season 1 Toph fights and even though the animation is simpler it has more personality and Toph’s moves have more weight.

It's Bryke. It's almost certainly all Bryke. They made the decision to recast the characters with amateurs.
Same for the writing, though I thought it was mostly serviceable, and some of mediocre dialogue is dragged to hell by the shit voice acting, when it could have been elevated by the original cast. Bryke are not good at subtlety, to say the least.
They are narrowly talented in the ways they even brought the original show together. Aside from that, I wish someone would tie them to a chair with duct tape after whatever good work they do is done. They are, at best, inconsistently competent writers, but still overall mediocre.

Yes, he’s incredibly good. People complain because they compare him to Zaheer. But the avatar world isn’t that big, what other villain could you bring in whose power could truly rival the Avatar’s? A Godzilla-like spirit? Another genocidal tyrant/ Hitler?
An airbender who was a friend of a former Avatar, driven by a desire for revenge over past wars, isn’t a bad idea at all. The illusion of Aang when he finally gets an airbender back, and that same illusion shattering when he realizes the guy is completely unhinged, works really well for me.
