I figured this was pretty much universally agreed upon. The series didn't suddenly turn to shit, it gradually lost its sparkle over time. Even newer season episodes might have 1 good line or joke in it, but nowhere near the earlier seasons.

Funny enough, Harry Shearer's voice IS starting to give out lately. I've seen many a complaint about his Mr. Burns voice in particular.

The reason that episode is so great is because of how densely packed it is with jokes and just how many of them are memorable. There's not really any other episode in the series that matches it.

I liked that episode. I like some episodes of the later seasons (before season 16, before season 19 at the latest).
It was also fun when Mr. Burns worked as a replacement for Homer or a manatee worked as his replacement. I loved the island arc and Lisa jr.

I think what separates the early teen seasons isn't their quality as much as still occupying an organic position in the zeitgeist. it was still a viable show even if it had gotten sloppier and more lowbrow. the corporate desperation later on is when it started to become nauseating.

Yeah, he's starting to go. There was a clip of a Burns/Smithers conversation from last seaosn that's painful.

The core six really got an iron grip on the show and nobody ever bothered to tell them to fuck off. Now, from what we've seen of replacements for characters like Hibbert, I don't have faith in who they would hire. You could probably do an open call in any major metro area and get a handful of jagoffs off the street who can do a handful of spot-on impressions, but because they aren't in the industry it doesn't matter.
I like Kevin Michael Richardson, but his Hibbert is awful.

That, and there was still a connection (i.e. the writers) to the past seasons that still had some of the magic there. The further away we get, the more that the bad stuff starts getting copied and suddenly Treehouse of Horror goes from a once a season treat to night every third or fourth episode. Why? Because they we beloved and the writers liked being able to play with the characters in such a way.

I maintain that Trilogy of Error is the last truly classic-feeling Simpsons episode. Out of seasons 11 - 13 it's also by far the highest-rated episode on imdb, with an average rating of 8.6. The last time an episode got a rating that high was The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson, 3 seasons earlier. It's honestly kind of jarring how much better it is than what else was going on around it.

Everything about how the Simpsons production is run nowadays feels increasingly sad and devoid of passion. Even the smooth bits of animation we get in newer seasons--while admirable--don't hit as hard as, say, this classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnVrop697uU
They lack that OOMPH that rounded out the snappy writing of yesteryear

Anyone else read the comics as a kid? I never see them discussed much here, they were still good even while the show was going to shit

I have a theory it was an old script they dug up and reworked or something, the pacing and writing feel way more like a classic episode and the only thing about it that feels like a contemporary episode is the scene where Homer first lost his thumb and bleeds everywhere.

i remember it I had some but then I donated to the local library.
Anyway I remember they were funny I liked them a lot and I liked them especially because it felt like a continous "Treehouse of horror" or an Anthology episode because every story was jsut not grounded but you could see it was really treated like a cartoon, like I remember the story where Springfield does a contest where they put a Biosphere with a garden inside and put 2 families inside to survive, one was flanders family and they thrived and created a villa while the simpsons were barely surviving and in the end the fire that ned Built for his home start burning his home and the Biosphere so homer come and save everyone by carring everyone on his shoulder and I remember distinctly that he punched ned in the face because he was having a panic attack and so he put it to sleep with a sucker punch.

This one?
>>
>>153267449
Yeah exactly that one. I remember even one that you had to bend the pages to see the secret messages inside, because if I remember like bart start doing a comic and he get published but working in the comic industry is really hard and he has like to draw comics everyday without complaining and getting paid and to show that he was used he madea special cover that you had to bend to see the secret message that was like "I'm imprisoned and this guy he's stealing my money and forcing me to draw" or something like that.
I tought it was clever, but with hindsight many copies would be ruined just for that page and secret message.
One last fact I remember that I discovered only years later when I picked up "Fury and the agents of shield" original run that there were some simpsons comics with Krusty and the agents of Clown or Laugh or something like that and didn't know it was a parody of nick fury.
Maybe i'll read it online or rent it from the library.

I'd argue they're the same kind of bad. The recasts because there's no effort to actually try and recapture the character in most of these. The ones staying because Julie and Harry sound like they're about to die in the recording booth.

>no effort to actually try and recapture the character
I'll say that the new guy doing Carl is at least trying to imitate the proper inflection and delivery, his voice is just way too deep.
Hibbert isn't even trying.

That's because Kevin's voice is instantly recognizable. and doesn't have that level of range to even come close to Harry. Or at the very least, they should have had him go for the voice he used as Grimace in those Ronald McDonald VHS tapes.
