Do you agree with the notion that if the voice actor dies the character should die too?

If we're talkin cartoon characters, then no. Either recast, or take it as a sign that you should probably end the show altogether.

I think it means the Simpsons should have ended decades ago.

There's an episode where Bart gets Krabappel's old journal meant as some sort of emotional episode. At the end of it, they show a flashback of Flanders and Krabappel where Flanders is thinking of moving away from Springfield and takes a family vote. They verbatim just use archival audio of her speech to Moe from the flashback episode where she dated him and expect you not to be able to recognize it.

that show should've ended in the 2000's

Ending The Simpsons then would've just brought along the reboot sooner

>>153263203
No, that's retarded.
Actors don't matter.
>>
>>153263203
No, but I am in favor of whatever ends The Simpsons as soon as possible, so I'll make an exception and say "yes" for this show specifically.

I think it depends on the cartoon. Something like the Simpsons can sacrifice a side character because their actore died. A story driven cartoon or a main character should be recast or like up said probably just end the show if your entire main cast is dying of old age. The new Simpsons doesnt really hold any kind of cultural value now anyway so ending it isnt a big deal imo.
>>
>>153263203
why does everyone always seek a one-size-fits-all answer instead of "it depends on the situation"?
>>
>>153263203
Unless the next VA is indistinguishable from the previous, yes.
>>
>>153263203
Generally the characters should be recast, but Simpsons was a unique situation where it still had a foot in the world of traditional sitcoms.

More of Edna in this outfit, please.

This. Unless it's like Scooby Doo or something that's been going since the 60's writing off the character is fitting.

they never should have killed any major cast members on the Simpsons. It messes up character dynamics.
Plus, they straight up need to fire half of the voice actors now. They don't sound like the characters anymore. It's a farce.
>>
>>153264443
might have been a good thing. Look at Scooby Doo. It benefits from having a revamp every few years.
>>
I think retiring McClure and Hutz made sense due to the circumstance around Hartman's death.
They jumped the gun killing Maude since Maggie Roswell just came back like two years later. They should just recast other characters, like they did with Russi Taylor's characters. I get that Edna was "Marcia Wallace's character," but I think everyone likes Edna and the show is worse without her. Are they going to stop using Fat Tony when Joe Mantegna dies? Doris Grau died but they brought back Lunchlady Doris (and changed her name to Dora, for some reason).

I came to the realization a few years ago that The Simpsons is basically one of those Scooby Doo or TMNT type shows, except it never goes on hiatus for 5 years and continues in perpetuity. The series is basically reset every few years, changing characters birth years and such, but because it never officially goes off the air, people bitch more.
>>

Hartman's characters were small enough side characters that I get it.
Even then though, they maybe could have just had Billy West take over, when an appropriate amount of time had passed.
>>
>>153267571
Yeah, except we don't get the full creative overhall that might actually be good to keep the thing fresh. it just kind of festers.
If someone did a Mystery Inc style light reboot of the Simpsons, where they kind of broke down the format and made it something slightly different, I'd be into that.

Holiday's of Future Passed could have been a good premise for a sequel series. It was a good episode. The entire "future timeline" they use for a few episodes is generally good, until that shitty one where Homer dies like 30 times.
