Serious question, not a coomer bait thread: which is the better character, Felicia Hardy or Selina Kyle? Is it true that while Catwoman came first, she ripped off her modern characterization from Black Cat? Or is that a casual myth? How do they really differ in characterization despite similar trope? Who has the better costume? Better stories?
Or is okay to like both?

Originally? Felicia was nuts. She was fixated on Spider-Man as a concept to such a degree that when Peter first unmasked for her, she freaked the fuck out and screamed for him to put his mask back on. The idea that Spider-Man wasn't in-costume 24/7 and actually enjoyed having a day life was completely alien to her.

Cat is a literal hedonistic whore and most times completely insane just like what >>153276097 said. Catwoman most time is some flitty broad who gets in way over her head because literally everyone else around her is fucking insane while all she wants to do is steal kitschy cat stuff.

But hasn't she changed since? For like, years? Because before she couldn't imagine anyone being normal like Pete, but has since come around.
I think where Felicia and Selina overlap is that both don't know how to function outside of their costumed personas, like genuine autism degree. Outside of the act, they fear to be vulnerable, especially emotionally. Both want to be better for their hero men, but where they differ is that Hardy missed her shot

That's still part of the act. It's one half scouting for new marks to steal from, other half trying to pretend like she has a social life. Also like Bruce, Selina has a compulsion to pick up "strays". Kyle's stems from her shitty childhood growing up on the streets.
Actually come to think of it, what IS Felicia's origin? I know her dad was a thief

They haven't interacted in a long while, probably for the best considering Tom King fucked things up. Last time they did it was Selina checking in on Bruce after he lost Wayne Manor to Vandal Savage and moved into Pennyworth Manor. However there is news that she'll be showing up soon in the Fraction run. They both really love each other, so maybe things will stick

catwoman and black cat are basically dc and marvel comics
marvel's better, but it had the benefit of starting later, and almost immediately rejecting the hokey corny ways of the censored past.
once you account for that, DC's almost as good, so it's kinda comparing apples and apples. They're both great, when written by the right person. they both have good costumes, when drawn by the right people. They represent the same pretty neat concept, as long as you aren't retarded about it.
I'd say the main difference is that Catwoman actually has a chance, a CHANCE of being an okay mate for SOME versions of Batman. And the rest, she's a "maybe could have been"
for Spidey, Black Cat is pure temptation. He already had two perfect girls he doesn't need a third. I liked when they paired her with Morbius in the 90s show. That felt... right.

Pretty much that. She was a major daddy's girl and decided to follow in his footsteps even though that's the exact opposite of what he wanted.

What do you guys actually mean by this and when did it happen? My impression is that you guys are saying Catwoman wasn't flirty and smug towards Batman like Black Cat is to Spider-Man? What about the Adam West show? That seems to me pretty much equivalent to that dynamic and that was the 60's, way before Felicia. Catwoman wasn't as obsessed and would get mad or leave Bats to go on his own to focus on "the mission" so that is main differentiator between her and Felicia in my mind. Felicia would do the same when the mask came off but she's much more willing to be good in comparison to Selina.

It isn't "just" about being flirty and seductive, but also the relationship to "man vs mask," the flirtation being a coverup for her serious internal emotional issues, being an adrenaline junkie and not "just" a thief, etc. Subtle things that you don't even notice until someone points out when they're missing, because they seem like such obvious components of what we now think of as female thieves.

Look I'm gonna be honest Felicia always just seemed like a whore addicted to naughty things and didn't even love Peter as much as she loved Spider-Man. In the Pre-Crisis world Catwoman straight out married Batman and usually would never choose herself over doing the right thing and helping him (or Robin) from even her earliest appearances when she was simply The Cat. Batman even said any bad things that result from her actions is incidental and unintentional where with Felicia she clearly gets fucking horny from doing bad criminalistic shit.

Correct me if I'm wrong but old school original Catwoman was just a gangster and a thief, no cat and mouse game with Bruce that results in reformation. That came later, right?

That's how things started but hasn't been the case in decades.

Felicia is a better character in the sense that she is the more succinctly described dysfunctional whore. Catwoman is some "sexy" bad girl. Black cat has a clearly understood unhealthy psychology that is a foil to Peter Parker's tendency to overindulge in his spider-man persona to the detriment of his civilian life. She fits well as an inversion of his other love interests and as a warning to what he could end up like if he goes down the wrong path. Catwoman is a meaningless fucktoy. Black cat for her flaws which complement spider-man is a great character in the work she was written in.

That wasn't me but thanks for clarifying. But yeah I've seen her silver-age appearances and I don't know enough but do her henchmen show up as well? That's part of that era, right?

i don't hate catwoman, but she carries no themes that I'm aware of in any work I've seen her in. She exists as a thief with a crush on batman. I don't know what value she adds to the themes of the work she is in.
