if you don't have pic related, you are not going to achieve much - hand auger don't really go bellow 35-50cm. Your option is to hire a mini excavator and dig a trench around the perimeter, and lay a retention wall from bricks.

Even hand turned soil augers only go 85-100cm deep, the further down you go the harder and more compact the soil is
It will fuck up a hardened steel hand tool, I'm pretty sure PVC will rip itself apart when you go deep enough

i like the idea of putting in a retaining wall probs a MSE, geogrid alternatives are cheaper than rebar.

i discussed it with my better half and she reckons that a dry soil nail reduces risk, i can rent a rotary hammer and put something in without digging, shear strength of the rebar is the only and square cube law screws my friction/penetration depth. concern is the bore hole equivalent of a gopher hole will collapse the hill, i might have exaggerated the risk to loosen the purse strings whoops. i have been watching pvc well digging is it that easy?
