FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
Usage: paste this into Powershell, run.

irm https://get.activated.win | iex

>and Office?
Same link, select Ohook option
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

>What version should I install?
>W10 Enterprise IoT LTSC 2021
Binary identical to Enterprise except no MS Store or apps
Preinstalled with: Edge & Win32 system apps

Manual version upgrades

>W11 Enterprise IoT LTSC 2024
Same as W10 version except:
UI written in React Native aka JavaScript including: Start, Taskbar and Explorer that lags even on i9s
Use only if you fell for the 12th+ gen Intel meme and need the new CPU scheduler
Wait for IoT LTSC 2027 if you can

>Installing apps on LTSC
Use WinGet/Scoop or install MS Store in CMD with: wsreset -i

>W11 Home/Pro/Education/Enterprise/Enterprise IoT
Preinstalled with: Edge, Win32 system apps, MS Store, OneDrive, Weather, Movies, Music, Candy Crush, etc
Auto-reinstalls apps on feature updates

I'm thinking of switching back to Windows from Linux. I tried Linux Mint and Arch for almost a year and it's just not for me, while i like some stuff some things just don't work (like Nvidia drivers). The problem is that my hard drives are formatted as ext4, are they just fucked? Is there anyway to "convert" them to NTFS without losing anything? Or some ext4 driver for Windows?
>>
>>108572878
>ext4 driver for windows
there might be a third party one but definitely nothing first party

>convert
i'm not aware of a way to convert from ext4 to ntfs. you can set a drive up as ntfs and move stuff over to it though if you have the room.
>>
>>108572935
>set a drive as ntfs and move stuff over
I already did that for Linux with ext4, but now they're both full and I can't just keep buying drives whenever I want to switch.
Does anybody have any experience with third party ext4 drivers?

I've just learned about the notepad++ autoupdater malware fiasco (which is kinda old news by now), but fortunately I haven't updated since 2022.
Considering I'm fine with the notepad++ as is, for the sake of security should I update to the newest version now (and never again in the foreseeable future) or should I keep using the old version?
>>
>>108573532
The only thing that was effected was the autoupdater itself. You can update it directly from their website and it would be fine.
>>
>>108573532
it was targeted malware that was deployed only for a limited amount of time to intended targets. like with most apts, it deliberately avoided deployment to non-targets. so you are probably fine. and presumably they've patched the hole and are a bit more properly paranoid now.

supply chain attacks can hit anything. if you're ever actually worried, just start verifying hashes manually.

there's nothing wrong with 13th gen or newer intel, the issue is with support for it. ltsc 2021 doesn't support it at all, 22h2 does but barely. if you want proper support you need windows 11 with the redesigned scheduler that is actually able to properly make use of the architecture.

I am running Win10 IoT Enterprise LTSC (21H2).
I installed it a long while ago (~2024), and I have forgotten the post-install reg-edits I made. Although all changes I made were things discussed in this general at that time.

I am trying to use the Microsoft Store to install a few things. However, it fails in the following way: It closes with no error message when it tries to display an app page.

Example 1:
>launch Microsoft Store from the start menu
>it opens, top panels do not load, bottom panels do, picrel
>click on any available app to install
>it seems to load for a fraction of a second, displaying an unfinished app page
>it then closes with no error message

Example 2:
>in web browser, go to the Microsoft Store page for WebP Image Extension
>click install and agree to launch Microsoft Store locally
>it mostly loads the page and crashes, as in the previous example

Running "wsreset -i" does not resolve the issue.

Please help me resolve this. WebP Extension is one example, but I have actually important software to install too.

The ISO is old enough that it might not boot on newer machines currently if secure boot is enabled. Install it with secure boot turned off, then let it update to the latest cumulative update so backend stuff is updated, then you can turn it back on.

I should add that it also gives this message when trying the (latest) evalution version from the official microshart website so I'm not suggesting it's infested with malware. Just curious wtf it is and whether I can safely ignore it or need to change my bios settings.

Do I need to use some custom build?
>>
>>108589581
You could run IoT LTSC 2021 or 10 Enterprise 22H2 with ESU fairly easily. Just do a ShutUp10 run on them to disable all the telemetry services and such and they'll run fine.
Just remember to wipe each drive with a diskpart clean in the Windows setup so no rogue partition ghost data will fuck anything up.
>>
>>108589599
>Just remember to wipe each drive with a diskpart
Do I need to do that? won't windows install offer an option to delete the partitions?
Also for some weird reason hiren's doesn't boot because of low system memory, it has 4 GB.
What do I do? even when I took the 2 GB module from the other laptop it still didn't boot.
Sergi managed to boot into WinPE though.
And yes this is still on HDD.

What about post installation?
I've got winget, and installing some basic applications.
Is shutup10 enough, or do I need to bother with privacy sexy and titus script?
What about SDIO?
It's an old laptop, so I don't think there's even driver for win 10 is there?
>>
>>108589974
I would install it offline, Enterprise lets you make a local account no matter what if it is.
Installing winget via the asheroto script is a good clean way to get it, and then you can use it to install programs if you wish (start doing this after you install the latest cumulative update.)
Use ShutUp10 while the system is still offline (have it handy on your boot USB root or something) and yes, it's enough.
SDIO can help if Windows Update can't find drivers for your old systems.

Yes, using the community module PSWindowsUpdate. Basically just append these two lines to your script that runs winget to update the programs
>Import-Module PSWindowsUpdate
>Install-WindowsUpdate -MicrosoftUpdate -AcceptAll -AutoReboot
Also maybe a good idea to do a Write-Host line telling him that the computer is gonna restart if an update happens.

a big problem microsoft has had over the past like 10 years is how aggressive they are with integrations. it's ruined a lot of their projects. onedrive was fine as a dropbox/drive competitor until they forced it into windows, turned it on by default, sucked up all your user folders into it, and then made it not spit them back out if you uninstalled. that was retarded. cortana would have been ok (not great) as an opt-in assistant, but instead they tried to force it onto everyone and everyone turned it off out of annoyance. bing integration went similarly, and now they're doing the same shit with copilot.

i use a lot of llms, including copilot, and while copilot is nowhere near the best, it's at least serviceable (i mainly use it for ms-related questions since i assume it has access to more ms documentation than others on average). but trying to force into fucking mspaint and notepad and every other ass-end of the os is just retarded. as usual, microsoft's failure is with their integration strategy.
>>
>>108590504
Copilot is mostly being used by businesses via Office 365, but not by home users who mostly just use ChatGPT or Gemini, maybe Claude. Claude is mostly used by businesses too but it also has home users because people like its cadence.

If the same version of end user application that does not require autorun, explorer integration, file association or service is available in all three sources above, which would you rather install?
>>
>>108596249
I mean winget just comes with a GAC Windows edition or via winget-install, so if I wanted something that would just install things normally to Program Files I'd use that. Scoop is great for CLI programs and things you want portable.
>>
>>108596272
>scoop
>portable
Last time I tried migrating my scoop environment to a new windows install nothing was working and I had to manually delete it, reinstall all applications one by one, and only then restore application settings. It's isolated from the rest of OS but not really portable in the usual sense.

Sup, after reading the install guides I have some questions. I'm doing a clean install on a Lenovo Y720 because the sata ssd started to fail recently so I ordered an nvme one. I already backed up my files and used rufus to burn an ISO on a flash drive so:

1- The laptop came with W10 installed, would the og key would work for a LTSC version? I assume it won't and I should just use the activator to get the IoT LTSC in spanish but I'm curious.

2- I see in every guide that I should take out edge and defender as soon as possible, are they really that bad? if so why?

3- I mostly use the laptop for vidya/browsing and maybe using CAD software in the near future, is there any config or install in particular I should be aware of for these use cases?
>>
>>108596249
if i never need to actually do anything in the program directory, probably ms store. otherwise, winget.
>>
>>108597079
>The laptop came with W10 installed, would the og key would work for a LTSC version?
not unless it came installed with enterprise which i highly doubt. you'd need to use MAS to activate, yes.

>I see in every guide that I should take out edge and defender as soon as possible, are they really that bad?
no, the people who make the guides are very opinionated and a lot of people don't like edge or defender. i will say you should probably turn startup boost off in edge, it preloads it into memory so it "opens faster." waste of resources, typical microsoft cancer.

>I mostly use the laptop for vidya/browsing
there's not really anything if you're going with windows 10. just configure it to your liking. i recommend turning off web search from the search box, onedrive, and configure windows update to however you prefer to handle it. all of this can be done pretty easily through group policy.

>Use Windows 11 daily: Attempt #893745
So, enabling Hyper-V actually fucked up my Windows 11 Pro, started getting BSOD's all over the place and decided to reinstall but instead of doing a full reinstallation I opted to use the "Reset this PC" feature of Windows because why not.
Configured it to keep my data and turns out:
>All apps removed except the ones that comes by default with 11, expected
>All data in my home folder, expected
>All drivers installed
I have serious concerns about the last point, from my standpoint it should clear out all drivers and install fresh, what if the kernel is already poisoned by some hacky chinkdriver, I mean it is convenient, sure, but it defeats the purpose of reinstallation.
So, I did:
>Win11 Debloat
>Install Office
>Install Brave + Tampermonkey + 4chanX
And that's pretty much it, the system feels way snappier than before. I will now do the right thing and leverage Linux and virtualization shit to my Linux servers and leave my Windows 11 alone.
Thanks for reading my blog!

Has anyone experienced bad stuttering like this in Windows 11 with all applications and windows explorer? For example in OpenOffice Calc where it's really bad and evident when I move the mouse over the icons at the top the cursor stutters each time one is highlighted. I BSOD'd while working on something, and when I rebooted, the folder with the files I was working on disappeared. I'm not sure if they were deleted, because the available space on the drive didn't change. I'm almost certain that drive is failing. Luckily, it wasn't my boot drive. Is there a way of recovering the files? I downloaded and tried Recuva, but they showed as unrecoverable.

>>108600636
stutter can come from a variety of sources. start with task manager on the performance tab and see if anything is spiking to 100% utilization while that's happening.
>>
>>108600641
run chkdsk /f driveletter: on it, it's possible the files got orphaned (i.e. lost in the allocation tree). if one of them was really big and you know approximately how big, you could also use wiztree (or windirstat or whatever) on the drive and check for any files that were almost the same size (like there probably won't be many files on your drive that are exactly 8gb, maybe like 20-30, you could literally just look at them all).

what's your total ram, currently used ram, and page file size?

also, open an admin command prompt and run sfc /scannow and if it finds issues reboot. you may also want to schedule chkdsk /f on the os drive for next reboot.

Okay, you must be a genius because after running sfc /scannow it completely went away. I didn't even restart either, I screenshotted the results. I don't understand how that could have caused it and it's been doing it for weeks.
>>
>>108600694
chkdsk was the first thing I did as soon as I noticed the folder was gone, but it didn't help. However, I just ran Windirstat, and I found it. I'm pretty sure the folder with all of its missing files, in its entirety, is right there. How do I get it out? It's in a folder that ends in .chk, so I think it might be orphaned.
>>
>>108600941
ok, so what happened was some os files were corrupted. sfc was able to repair some but it can't repair all of them, usually because winsxs has some issues that would need to be fixed by dism first. however, what it was able to fix was what was causing your immediate problems, so that's good at least.

>>108600947
you should just be able to open it and move them out.

if it won't let you and says something about permissions, then permissions got fucked up when the folder got orphaned; right click the folder, go to properties, security, advanced, and give yourself ownership and full control permissions. you should also probably set it to apply to subfolders and files as well.
>>
>>108600941
>>108600973

yeah drive is fine. probably just random fails from usage, it happens.

if you're not having any other issues, this isn't really necessary, but if you want to sort out the remaining os corruption, you can do so by doing
>DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
from an admin command prompt. it'll take a lot longer than sfc /scannow (potentially an hour or two, sometimes as low as 10-15 minutes though) and it'll probably freeze for a long time at 60%ish, which is normal because it's downloading a bunch of shit from microsoft to fix the winsxs store. then run sfc /scannow again afterward and it should usually fix whatever it couldn't fix earlier. then do a reboot.

Felt like tinkering with linux running bare metal over the weekend. Had everything working fine, and realized that despite knowing far more about this system than your average loonix devotee, I don't like it much as a cohesive system. Parts viewed in isolation have their merits, but I'd never want to run it as a desktop (any DE). What I need from linux is best met with WSL2 or a dedicated server.

One nice thing is that installation alongside Windows 'just works' even with Secure boot. The volume being deleted there is the boot partition on a secondary drive (you can't remove those in Disk Management, which is why you need diskpart).

From what I remember if the March update had your computer restart twice and it booted normally afterward, then your certs were updated.
>>

none of my devices got them automatically, i only noticed because tpm-wmi was bitching every time i opened event viewer. with my desktop, i had to go into uefi, delete the secure boot certificates out, and then use the option to install default certificates. this worked on the most up-to-date firmware and i was able to get them properly set up on my desktop.

all of my other devices are end-of-life and are too old to get firmware updates and i'll probably have to work around it somehow.

properties
compatibility tab, make sure it's set to run as admin on that tab
shortcut tab, change icon, ok
general tab, for target add `cmd /c start "" ` to the front of it (without the backticks and with the space at the end)
you'll see a command prompt pop up when you launch it though

that's just the first method i found on google. if you don't like the command prompt popping up there are probably other ways you could work around it, maybe fuckery with scheduled task shortcuts or making shortcuts that point to shortcuts or writing a small program that runs the appropriate shit. might also be a registry setting for it or something.

alternatively, if you install programs to a folder in %userprofile% (e.g. c:\users\yourname\applications) or some other location that your account has full control access to, most applications won't ask to run as admin. the most common reason older programs ask to run as admin is because they're older than uac/program files virtualization and need admin because their application folder isn't writable.

the tradeoff is that this is marginally less secure because the whole point of microsoft making those systems was to prevent OTHER programs from writing to installed applications directories, but imo if you run some gay malware script there are a thousand other ways they're going to run their payload before looking for some custom meme directory in your user profile.

>>108609904
these are recommendations, do your own research and determine if you actually want these changes
use MAS to edition change to education (enterprise is probably fine too but education is my preference)
use group policy to set the following
>disable web search
>disable onedrive
>disable copilot
>configure windows updates to notify before download
>configure security/quality updates to have a 7 day delay
>configure feature upgrades to have a much longer delay (at least 180)

if there are things that annoy or bother you just ask here and we'll probably have a solution. most issues with windows 11 can be solved really easily, the only real exception is stuff related to explorer and there are usually workarounds for that.

What's usually the path to make a drive appear on the Windows install wizard? it's an Acer shitter and I've tried some BIOS tweaks and loading the AMD raid drivers doesn't work either. Funny enough, the drive already has an installation and boots right into it, but the BIOS doesn't recognize the drive as a boot drive, it just sees the Windows boot manager. Rescuezilla also can't see the drive, what a weird thing.

I wanted to do clean install but apparently my only option is to "reset" the actual install
>>
>>108610212
nvme or sata? or other? might need to supply the driver to windows installer.

to start with, check the bios and make sure it's not set to raid mode (should be ahci or acpi or something).
>>
>>108610237
sata, it's a cheap adata, according to my research it should use a very generic driver which Windows should recognize automatically, also I don't seem to find any drivers in their page.

mode is set to AHCI, which apparently can't be changed, seems to be a very restricted BIOS since it's not a high end model

Another thing I might try is use SDIO to see if I can pull some drivers for it

Those are totally different eras with different set of CPUs. Phenom II is from 2010 and while it can run Win10, it struggles with it, I imagine Win11 will be even worse (Source: I own one). Now Intel CPUs from this era will be more usable although I haven't tried them myself.

There's a new exploit targeting Windows Defender. When Defender finds a suspicious file with a cloud tag it tries to "fix" it by rewriting the file back to its original location. The exploit races this with an oplock and a junction. Defender thinks its writing to a temp folder when its actually writing into C:\Windows\System32. Defender delivers the payload straight to your face. The exploit targets Defender versions up to 4.18.26020.6. But it's fully patched in version 4.18.26030.3011. What applications do you recommend post installation on Win 10/11
For me it's
>Chrome/Firefox
>Nanazip/Winrar
>Sumatra/PDF gear
>VLC/K-Lite
>VC++/.NET
>Paint.NET
Anything else?
And what image viewer do you recommend?

>Steam
>Notepad
>Media Player

>Runtimes

23h2, but I have no idea what do you mean by group policy to target.
>>
>>108621961
win+r > gpedit.msc > computer config > admin templates > windows components > windows update > manage updates offered from windows update > select the target feature update version > top box Windows 11 > bottom box 23H2

you may also want to go into "manage end user experience" and "configure automatic updates" to "notify for download and auto install," this way updates don't get forced down your throat and you have to hit download to kick them off

>Google Play Games
Doesn't really fit my needs because I don't necessarily want to ONLY do games.
>Android Studio also works fine
I had no idea it did, thank you so much. I already use it I just thought it was hyperv incompatible.

I mean you gotta set it up a little but it's a fairly solid .apk runner if you have the correct settings.
