Honestly saying you bought one would get the reaction this meme is to convey

I never even bought a Blu-Ray player or movies.

Sony sided with Blu-Ray over HD DVD to fuck Microsoft.

I don't give a shit about MIcrosoft, but HD DVD was the better format.

I bought one fairly recently and I regret not getting another for backup since they're all out of manufacturing now it seems.

I bought one because i only watch media that i physically own. doesn't matter how shit it is or if i'll never watch it again. there are few exceptions, such as the BluRay/DVD being out of print, or the media not originally being intended for physical release. but otherwise, i like pretending to be a librarian and having a massive shelf of random BluRays/DVDs that contain miscellaneous movies, TV shows, documentaries, and even personal footage shot by others that i found.

I don't understand the deal with Blu-Ray, I have a ton of DVD's and yet Blu-Ray has been around since 2006 and should have completely replaced DVD on the spot for music and movies.

Even though I only have two Blu-Ray's I'm still pissed out I missed out on some new old stock drives for $160 lately even though my current case does not have the mounting hardware for 5,25 drives right now.

It's strange.

I did buy two bluray drives but only to digitize my physical collection.

It's on my list of things to purchase. I don't plan on buying lots of blurays. Especially not of things I can already acquire from the internet for free. But I want to be able to buy and rip movies that I choose. I already collect CDs and rip those.

Bold of you to assume they can still be purchased.

You can blame BD+ and AACS for this one.
There are only two programs that are officially licensed to play back Blu-Ray content normally on PCs.
VideoLAN allegedly has a working codec for Blu-Ray playback, but I found that the MakeMKV codec to VLC works best.
VLC is really finicky so I don't expect things to work on first try, or it works on your first try and then afterwards it stops working for no reason at all and you have to repeat the process again. (an average VLC experience)

I thought about buying M-Disc capable BR writer and media for long term storage

But 100GB max seems to small

I doubt most people did. Even when Bluray got somewhat popular in 2008/2009 most people were ready to abandon physical media on their computers.
