Installing Gentoo is the obvious progression from Arch, specifically if you get into "lower" programming languages like C and you start reading the source of foss projects and making your own modifications, at first you start using AUR, then it's not enough and you start making your own PKGBUILDs, then your realize that you are fighting against the design of Arch (which is binary-first) and when you hear about Gentoo (which has all that Arch has and more and it's source-first) and how much better ebuilds are it's the natural choice to switch.
