>nobody is going to buy these! - /g/

https://9to5mac.com/2026/04/16/macbook-neo-sells-out-for-april-as-demand-for-apples-affordable-laptop-outpaces-supply/

It's time to admit you were wrong, /g/
People wanted a cheaper Macbook, even if you don't like the specs.

They should go back 2 more generations with the chip, give it 6gb of ram, call it the Nu MacBook and sell it for $399 (599 euros outside of the US), I want normies to have increasingly worse hardware so that my computer will remain state of the art for as long as possible
>>
>>108621535
With the price of everything going up, it's hardly a surprise.
Also, what was /g/ wrong about? It's not like this was stupidly overpriced like Vision Pro. There's a lot of people this would be handy laptop for.
>>
cool
still waiting for a newer version with backlit keys
>>
>>108621535
I'm more surprised they didn't prepare for a massive demand.
It's basically the chromebook killer, and a whole generation of kids will now be captured in the apple ecosystem.
>>
>>108621754
you want my iphone chip huh, no its staying in my pocket asshole
>>
>>108621766
no wonder ms is panicking and for the first time actually seems to give a shit about windows again
>>
>>108621535
>nobody is going to buy these!
Only the retards among us thought this.
This was always clearly going to do numbers with educational facilities, university students and poor people who bought the dog shit non-pro macbooks in the past.
>>
>>108621781
>Only the retards among us thought this.
well they were very lewd if they were just a minority
>>

>well they were very lewd if they were just a minority
I assume you mean loud, but yes they are. This place is disproportionately retarded and out of touch with reality.
>>
>>108621821
yeah sorry meant loud

Most of the complaints about the Neo are from spiritual (or actual ones idk) children who believe mommy is going to buy them a Macbook but now are only going to get the actual identifiable poverty model rather than the more ambiguous M models where they can lie and gloat about specs.
>>
>>108621754
Just get a refurb air, it's cheaper and has backlit keys.
>>
>>108622044
It's the cheapest an apple laptop with actual macOS will ever be, so I don't get the whining. It does what a student would want to do with it.
It even looks good and it forces other manufacturers to rethink their whole lineups.
I don't plan to buy it but I'm happy for the increased competition and that this replaces the abomination that was chromebook.
>>
>>108621535
>It's time to admit you were wrong, /g/
Wait, wasn't everyone saying this will sell like hotcakes? Didn't Microslop shit their pants when Apple released this?

It's an objectively great product for a lot of users. I don't like FagOS but I don't remember anyone here denying that this is Apple pissing on Microsofts Consumer Hardware Corpse.
>>
>>108622084
For the younger generation it's never about if it's a good laptop. Just how it's perceived.
The Neo will run great for just about anything but it is clear your parents bought you a Neo which signals they just can't throw away $1200+ to get busted or stolen.
>>
Wow, an affordable laptop that heems anything running Windows is selling out?
Stop the presses! Apple was right about one thing at least:
If you're going to have nonfree garbage in your platform, at least for the nonfree cuck devs on a neverending upgrade treadmill so they maintain their shit software and you don't get pigeonholed into supporting dogshit like M$
>>
>>108621535
>apple made a $600 chromebook.
>retards are gobbling it up.
explain this to me. Is there really nothing more to it than the logo? is the screen at least good?
>>
It chips away ever so slightly at Apple's prestige but it's a good thing for students and people who want a cheap Apple computer to manage all their iDevices left. Releasing something like this when Microsoft is absolutely shitting the bed with Windows was a good play too
>>
>>108621535
I considered buying it but no VM support and 8GB RAM.
Got a second hand ThinkPad instead.
>>
Not sure why /g/ isn't talking about the supply chain issue here, it's interesting whether you like the laptop or not.
The plan was to use their leftover binned A18 Pro SOCs. The neo is selling a lot better than they expected and now they aren't going to have enough chips. Their options are
>restart A18 production
probably not possible, all the fabs are completely booked. Even if it was possible it might not make financial sense
>rush to market a new model using the A19 Pro
not sure if this can be done quickly enough or if the A19 cost is low enough (slightly different TSMC process and it has an extra 4GB of memory). might be confusing for customers.
>raise prices to reduce demand
there's little point in this machine unless it stays well clear of Air pricing

They might be fucked. Will be interesting to see what they do.
>>
>>108622656
Wouldn't it have made more sense to buy a MacBook Air instead? Still cheap, but much more powerful than the Neo.
>>
I think people are misunderstanding the purpose of the Neo, it’s almost entirely made out of unsold stock. The reason it’s so easy to disassemble is because basically every part aside from the chassis is from a different product. The main board is from unsold iPhone 16 pros, the keyboard is from unsold magic keyboards (hence the lack of a backlight), and the screens are just 13 inch MacBook screens. The touchpad may or may not have been made for the Neo but considering it’s just a normal touchpad and not the Force Touch they’ve been using for years now they probably just got a deal on them.

I say all of this but I don’t think this is a bad thing at all. Taking what would otherwise be ewaste and using it for something useful is great, but the Neo wasn’t ever intended to be a Chromebook killer or a mainstay laptop. Think of it like iPhone 5c, they had unsold stock so they made a quick and easy budget model since even budget Apple crap is still better than a lot of chinesium on the market.
>>
everyone said this would happen

it's actually insane Apple made only like 5 million of them anyone could have told them they are going to sell 20 million of these easy
>>
>>108622726
>The neo is selling a lot better than they expected
I really cannot see how Apple thought they weren't going to sell so many of these
they better hope they have enough when the next college year starts
>>
>>108622794
/g/ what would be a better choice?
>>
>>108622794
Anyone who really needs that extra power will just buy a pro
the neo is like $500 and does everything that people who can only $500 on a laptop need
>>
>>108622913
Yeah but what if you need more power but don't want to spend $2k? Then $1k (sometimes $800) for the base Air makes perfect sense.
>>
>>108621535
I don't recall that
however I've heard a thousand times that apple drones will buy dogshit if it has an apple logo on it, does that ring any bells?
>>
They need to keep 8GB the minimum for as long as possible to force Electron app devs to optimize their shit.
>>
I want to buy a macbook pro maybe 14 inch m5. Is the matte screen worth it? How much ram is necessary? I want to use it for music development and other stuff too once I figure out what I can run on it
>>
>>108623260
Buy 16 inch better cooling your cpu won't throttle so easily.
24-36gb for basic multitasking
48+ if you want real multitasking
16gb version if you don't make money off your music.
>>
>>108622257
>t. freetard that can't afford it
>>
>>108621535
There's a world of difference between wanting to buy them and actually being able to buy them.
Either Apple increases prices or prices will skyrocket on Ebay first.

macs have:

doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>when pajeetOS runs out of RAM it swapfile rapes the SSD to death within 3 years
doesnt exist on 99% of PCs
>when the SSD dies it bricks your entire currybook because the EFI is stored on the soldered SSD to save $0.05 on a dedicated chip

unheard of on PCs, and yet you curryniggers defend it with "jus werx fer me!"
just because you're in the 36.5% survivor group doesn't make your currynigger trash any good
this list goes on forever
there's no PC laptop as total fucking currynigger shit as crapple's streetshitter books
they are the biggest heaps of steaming currynigger shit in the history of computing second only to curryPhones

I bought a Mac Mini M4 instead, concerned about performance, and honestly? I was kind of right.
Performance wise is nothing to be hopeful about. The only things I found impressive about this little fucker are:
-Latest thunderbolt, it's actually reading my external NVMe SSD at higher speeds than the fucking internal storage (but I had to buy a pricey dock for it)
-I don't know about adobe apps but so far, Affinity V3 is considerably faster than on my main Windows machine, it feels fucking smooth
-Parallels actually runs Windows quite well
The rest I'm not all that impressed with. Small lags here, small lags there. Not when opening applications but when I'm using them. Browsing specially, outside of Safari, every other browser feels more sluggish. Not just firefox (which is actually a default configuration problem, layout.frame_rate set to -1 makes it much laggier than if you set a fixed framerate) but also practically any chromium based browser as well. I'm willing to bet it's more of a GPU thing than anything else. I can't actually imagine having to deal with a Neo myself. The animations seem to be hardcoded to be shit at high refresh rates as well. I understand this even less. 60hz = snappy animations, but of course, it's 60hz. 120hz = smooth motion sure, but then switching desktops is a sloooow process.

Air > Neo

>$600
>Chromebook killer
You have no idea how poor the average Chromebook user is.
