Why are companies like this? It's not even about being more effective because they also don't even care about accuracy. It's just...less consumer interaction, which I guess makes them happy?

Chiefly because when your revenue model is advertising, which generates essentially no revenue, a single support call will cancel out a lifetime of revenue from that customer. That's why all megacorps have no human service.
