Guys, please I seriously need some critique and advice.
I know I'm still /beg/ tier trash but I genuinely am not sure how to move forward.
I just use a kind of soft textured pencil type of brush to make my sketch, I'm really just focusing on boundaries, which is a struggle for me around the face because the only actual distinct edges worthy of a hard line are the nostrils, eye folds, and lips, but I like to add lines were there tends to be a sort of steepness so bridge of the nose, the brow, lips, cheeks.
But I'm trying to elevate my sketch, my orginal sketch was in the middle. I redrew and resized some parts I didn't like, and then I tried two methods.
On the left I used a charcoal crush and just blended it with a generic blending stump brush, but I didn't press very hard so I never got any blacks.
The second one I used a hard brush at black and lowered the opacity so that it would naturally get darker from overlap. But this was so tedious and time consuming I gave up.
>>
>>7876294
Paint the entire body grey and add shadows and highlights as needed.
Right now your sketch makes little sense thus looks odd, the entire chest is as light as the brightest part of the drawing. Would it make sense that your chest was as bright as the sparkle in your eye (white)? That would only happen under very extreme conditions of light
>>
>>7876498
Wait so you advice to me is just make it grey?
That's the problem you see in my drawing?

Add the highlights, (some lighter grey or white) and be amazed. Where do you put it ? You can either take a reference similar to your image or use one of those 3d dummies and try to imitate the light you are going for
There's a reason why people draw on brown or grey paper, a few touches of black and white complete the sketch quite easily

Cute.
How do you get them to blend like that? I started using some I don't remember buying but it's hard to get soft edges like that. Though I think the new ones I bought will help a bit with that when they get here.
>>
>>7877843
Seconding this anon's question >>7877877 about blending because the gouache-like effect you got going on there is quite nice. I tried the medium-tip POSCA markers a while ago and felt like I was throwing shit at a wall.
>>
>>7877877
There's no blending you just need the proper colors. In fact you can literally see there which colors he used for ever part.
>>
>>7880439
Some of the edges look pretty soft. Acrylic markers do blend somewhat, but not easily.

Color?
>>
An experiment in ink and aquarelle.
I picked an easy subject so I could focus on the medium. No the actors don't quite look like themselves, that wasn't the focus here. Waah normie can't recognize celebrity. I don't care. You get manga face Crockett.
So what did I learn, what are the takeaways?

>Ink and water color indeed work nicely together. I think I'm starting to prefer this over using pencil or ink hatching for the lighter tones.

>Working in a bigger size always makes things exponentially easier in trad. Like, I know this, but I still keep making tiny drawings and they end up looking shit. I should go bold and big more often. Maybe even this (A3) is still on the small side. My previous attempt, which you will never see, was a disaster area because my composition was too ambitious and I made it way too tiny. Simplify compositions, go bigger. Lesson learned.

>Dry brush can create interesting effects. I'll have to experiment with that more.

>Guns are hard to draw... better refs might help. Should also pay more attention to hands I think. Doesn't matter that much if you look from far away, but, you know

>Mirroring gives me a weird feeling, like I've fucked up even worse than I thought. But it goes away as I stare at it longer. Well it's not like I can do much about proportions at this point. You might call it a downside of trad, but I kind of like the fact I'm forced to just do the thing, commit to it, call it done and move on. These constraints are good for weaning one off turd-polishing habits. If anything I've been too easy on myself babying myself with acrylics. They're too forgiving. My digital-moded brain still keeps fighting me. I just gotta remind myself the name of that feeling is COWARDICE.

when you color, how do you decide where to stop the coloring in relation to the lineart?
picrel. should I color up to the lines? not touch the lines? slightly touch them? stay coherent (always more or less the same length inside of the lineart)?
>>
>>7882495
It doesn't matter the line layer goes on top anyway
>>
>>7882499
yes but if the lineart has anything less than 100% opacity, then it's semi transparent like in my picture, and so you can see where the coloring ends through it
>>
>>7882501
>Low opacity Lineart
For what reason
>>
>>7882513
did you open the fucking image, anon? does it look low opacity to you? it's just not 100% ventablack. 90% is not 100% and you can see through it.
>>
>>7882516
why would you do lineart that isnt 100% opaque I can't think of any reason to do that ,it defeats the entire purpose of lineart
>>
>>7882495
You never want to leave empty space so you are going to colour it all anyway, it depends on what you want to have priority. For example, a blue shirt over skin. The blue shirt goes over the skin so you paint the blue all the way and over the line while the skin is only up to the line. Does that make sense?

I plan on painting this with watercolor, but for now all I've got is the lineart pass
>>7877877
>>7880422
Thanks! To be honest this spread was the first time I started using acrylic markers so I'm not super experienced in them but I can explain what I did. I use a paint brush to blend colors together and mixed them on a palette if I couldn't find a marker with the color I wanted. I clean off my brush in a cup of water to keep colors from getting muddy. My sketchbook is pretty small, so it'd be hard for me to get such thin lines without the brush

If i try and challange myself by drawing a car..even when i fail, other things improove. Ecc .

I did mostly detail focusing drawing, getting black contrasts with a lot of repeated texturing with this cheap Bic ballpoint. The gel ink will let me define these Grey blobs into actual details. But here is the Before snapshot you will compare to the gel ink extravaganza.

I have a fictional world, and I feel obligated to add to it. Thinking up What Happened Next is to be the First Audience to the story unfolding. I drew a demon head in a new sketchbook and gave it existence in my world, and that started a storyline that lasted 180 strips, and only two thirds told. I recommend getting a story on paper just to see where it goes, and refining that story can be done later. See where it goes.

Rest your hand untill it stops .and get those squeezing dodads.

Once i got my grippyes stronger ( by riding motorcycles funnily enough) i no longer had nerve issues with me hand.

Extra muscle will stabilise your wrists and reduce the compression of the nerves

one of the skills i find hardest to learn is consistently being able to compose real-feeling, emotive, and often intimate character interactions. this is really, really well done, and it feels like you set it down it naturally, like when someone is so good at something they make it look easy. great stuff.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but could you help me choose a design for a character? I've come up with a few ideas for her head and chest, but I'm not sure which combination would work best. Also, I just realized that I should have written "shoulders" instead of "shoulder."
>>7906363
That's a really nice comic. Crash's body looks a bit off in the sixth panel, butI love how the characters express themselves through both her facial expressions and body language. Also, the last three panels look really cool and funny.
>>7906606
That's quite a cool Maleficent chick. I really like her face, and I like the way you colored the image. It's refreshing to see brushstrokes in a digital drawing.
>>7906811
The contrast between his face and body is interesting. He has an attractive and approachable face with a masculine appearance, while his body is that of a dedicated warrior. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel that his forearm and hand look a bit odd. His sword also seems small, though I must admit that I don't know much about weapons. Perhaps it's a type of sword I'm not familiar with.

>>7907699
I like the way you paint color. It might help sell the effect to have the coloring on the hands be slightly affected by the white light outside of the frame to help sell the illusion?

>>7907731
Another beautiful use of color but your textures lack a sense of purpose. You kept the life of the eyes in tact which is the most important imo

>>7908145
I love the lighting in the background, and the sense of motion in the overall piece but something about the texture of the hair and clot thing feels off. Is this for a larger project?

>>7908149
Gorgeous colors but something about the values seems a little skewed/washed out. Like the hues are amazing but the tones are strangely dark or light in places which flattens the overall subject

>>7908175
>>7908178
What are you trying to convey? I like your shapes and lines but the subject matter feels non compelling imo. Good practice though.

the clothes are supposed to be magical hence the particles around the dress on the bottom character. it was supposed to look kind of reminiscent of a tornado. and for the hair i guess i just struggle with it but no its not really part of a larger project but maybe it could some day idk.

Foreshortening/perspective between the hips and chest isnt quite right, you’ve gotta make it look like the midsection leads up into that smaller perspective further away head
Otherwise your face is quite emotive, the pose is nice, and your coloration/medium tone shading is actually so good i would say you are worth it as an artist

yeah, it was clear that you understand shapes and anatomy in that drawing also composition wise its good.
and some advice if you dont mind: if you want to draw smut and you have no idea where to get ref, you can get your stuff from /s/ or other gooner board in this site; nudity is the fastest way to learn anatomy and fundamental in smut drawing, something like gravure collection helps you with compositioning and pinning the focal point in your subject anatomy

Didn't finish this sketch but looking for advice on how to make my style more cartoony in terms of expression. I've been trying to find a balance between the shape language, movement and expressiveness of western cartoons (namely ones that are more anatomically correct like the Goofy movies compared to something more simple and deformed like TAWOG) while still retaining the more anatomy and detailed, mature style of anime and not looking too squished or chibi if that makes sense. I feel like a lot of anime is quite stiff in expression compared to things like the aforementioned style of Disney animation and my style has followed suit, but I've been trying for so long now that I think I'll just have to choose one over the other.

Here's my general redline critique, your drawing looks good overall but I feel like she is missing the back of her head some, I would add on to the back of her head. Maybe someone else can correct the proportions of my redline, because the head suddenly seems small so adjust accordingly.
>>
>>7917505
>female mercwip
That was absolutely not my intention but now I cant unsee it, fug.
I think you based her head size on her large eyes, the cranium looks bulbous and the face small.
The redline of her body is far larger than my picture, she is suppose to be just 150 cm tall.

Sorry to go all non metric on you,
If you are going for a height that is 150 cm (4'9") then you did actually get the number of heads to her total height correct. It comes out to 6.8 heads tall if her head height is roughly 22cm (8.6inch)
Obviously, to find out how many heads tall you are IRL you can draw your height and silhouette on a wall and divide the length of your head by your total height. I myself have done this, I am 7.5 heads tall at 170cm (5'7") with my head height being 22cm. Proportionally, someone who is 6 feet tall (182cm) is about 8.2 heads tall.

I was going to correct you until I realized I miscounted.

Not gonna lie I would really appreciate some critiques of what I drew. Lately people don't seem to give me any which is disappointing.

The issue is I tend to ignore critiques that dont come across as helpful or are just elitist posturing. I want to improve how to draw hair and torsos and even wrinkles in clothing (which i tried to do for this but cut it because it looked off).

Thank you so much! Even this I really appreciate!

And admittedly, yeah I did feel her head looked awkward but I chalk that up to a lack of experience with turning heads at angles like that in relation to the neck.

Ear side, yeah they are slightly too big but i tried to keep it as close to the character as possible, chalk that up also to a lack of practice.

His ears aren't lining up consistently with the tilt of his head, the folds on the lowered straight arm seem a bit flat and awkward and I think the connection of the hand and wrist and the scale texture wrapping around the form could use some work.
