I know what that is but I don't know how to use it effectively. Nowadays I don't make very complex drawings, in the past I used to use it if I have complex outfit where parts of it can benefit from characteristic of large brushes, but I guess I was just too dumb to understand the advantage of it compare to just keeping the flat layers and use it as selection templates with magic wand

depends. Alpha lock is good for most cases, but clipping masks allow you to easily tweak lighting and mood if you set up your layers correctly for blending modes.
