the nasrid dynasty were likely iberian converts (muwallads) with a fabricated origin story, claiming descent from banu khazraj of medina (and Sa'd ibn Ubadah) for prestige, as it tied them directly to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) through his companions.
Ibn-Ahmar was a local farmer boy, from Arjona that consolidated power and become the ruler of the kingdom.
Whichever story is true, identity was more fluid than now, if you identified as "Arab" you were. That itself had broader connotations, than just race.
But somewhat funny is that the visigoths kings of the reconquista were germanics, while nasrids may have been living there since the iron age.
