Yeah the original VN of Higurashi and Umineko are both great in their own right and I will always love them dearly, it's just a disgusting shame that the fanbase and any future work will never be the same as the originals. It's so repulsive seeing the characters we grew to love over the course of hundreds of hours be twisted and warped into completely different people but still with the same face. A kind response on 4chan is uncommon! Gonna quickly note that while I haven't read the VN version of it yet, I'm confident that Tsumihoroboshi is going to top Peak Fiction and be the best arc in Higurashi, so I'll include it in my response.

I think the "Peak Fiction" arcs are all quite different in how excellent they are, but if there is a common thread between them, I think they're the three arcs for Higurashi that feel the most focused. Meakashi especially has genuinely incredible pacing which is kind of insane given R07's track record, but all three of these arcs have a thematic focus to them that feels far more tightly written and intentional than the other arcs. They don't just have great "moments", from start to finish they are consistently engaging and valuable.

Also, Tsukiotoshi has a good concept but holy shit, the writer for those two arcs is garrrrrbage. You can tell they hadn't finished reading the series when they wrote them because they fundamentally misunderstand the cast so egregiously, and so frequently, that it feels like a parody of the anime specifically. Like it's trying to become a staple of hatewatch parties for being gratuitous horror slop rather than any of the restraint of R07's works. I'm so glad the worst two console arcs are behind me.

Sounds exactly like how Outbreak was. Or at least the anime OVA adaption of the first part of it, I haven't tried to read that one since it was translated.

I watched the DEENime years ago so I could catch up in time for GouSotsu back when that was still airing...lmao. I had already read Umineko's VN at that time so I always planned to read the Higu VNs eventually, it was just a matter of time and motivation. MangaGamer also hadn't finished releasing all of them yet.

Years later I finally managed to motivate myself to read them via recording them for my channel, and because I've watched the fuckass anime, I'm including console arcs alongside the main series, cause it's not really my "first time" as butchered as the anime often is. It's interesting!

Having the anime under my belt is why I'm confident that Tsumihoroboshi specifically will be peak fiction even before I've read it. I would take a bullet for Rena. Favourite girl in any story.

Hmmm I think it may have been unfair to lump in all umifans into that category but I think my point still stands, a lot of his current fans are just people who endlessly praise whatever trash he milks out without caring about the heart of the original story. I wouldn't say most Higurashi fans are the same since most places I've been too and as a whole that most fans HATE what he did with Gou and some outright reject even thinking about it. It is without a doubt a very dark and bleak story however it is stories like these where moments of rejecting the world and the rules set in stone become all the more powerful, I really don't want to spoil it if you haven't read it but Nitta is totally one of my favorite characters like ever. Although I have yet to finish the actual main story and maybe it will end with a rather bleak hopeless message that scene involving Nitta will always have a special place in my heart just pure Keiichi core so fucking good =w=
But yeahhhh there are a ton of stuff I don't like about it as well the rape is one of it and how utterly dark it can get at times but I think it's part of the point the story wishes to tell, we'll have to see if it all pays off in the end!
