Bro you just keep reading and absorb it over time as you discover more of the fictional world, things start to connect and you recall stuff you've read before. I got into Conan by reading random comics out of order with no context, and over time I started to grasp where each country was etc.

Howard is a bad example of this since he deliberately kept things simple so readers can get the gist of what's going on and enjoy the story without needing to know anything about the setting or remember more than around four or five characters at any single time.

The Conan stories would have benefited from a grounding in actual history.
As it was, Howard borrowed historical kingdoms, tribes and suchlike without researching them. It all comes across as rather lazy.

It makes more sense and you get more context as you read more of the stories. I started with "People of the Black Circle" and I didn't know where the fuck Vendhya was but everything made sense as I kept reading.

You ever read the story that starts of with him getting crucified? That shit was cash. Howard was just hitting his stride. Damn shame.
