Do kids still read Dr Seuss or has he been relegated to the dustbin of history with the rest of the mediocre cishets?

He had a nearly unparalleled understanding of what small children enjoy--bright colors, rhymes, nonsensical humor, etc. That said, viewed from adulthood, his books might be mistaken for psychological programming meant to turn American youth into Soviet sleeper agents.

He was pretty cool, first children's author to adapt postmodernism to children in a way that made sense with the surreal landscapes and avant-garde naming/rhyme schemes, at least for kids' books it had never really been done. It was just stuff like Heidi or Anne Of Green Gables, which occasionally had illustrations for younger readers, or Great Illustrated Classics type things with heavily adapted versions of classic literature for a 2nd-3rd grade reading level
