People always overdramatize the past. Especially modern liberal people who are overly serious and have a chip on their shoulder but the right as well does it in a different way.
In reality you can tell even from this photo alone (and given the nature of photography at the time) they were probably just having fun with it. It wasn't that serious. I bet it was like the equivalent of a joke Christmas card.
This is the issue with tradition as a concept. Both sides look back at it as something more serious and more emblematic than the people who actually practiced it ever did.

this. The more I read history and theology the more I am convinced that most of the manmade ills throughout history had their source in fucking retards taking something too literally or not understanding nuance.
