I only got one of them because I chose the mountain trip.
If you choose the beach trip, you discover Reni is a girl earlier by seeing her in a swimsuit, which is cuter than the onsen reveal because she is bashful.

I wonder if there is aa way to find out earlier... this game has so many missable events.

Dating Sims are games like Tokimeki Memorial where you raise stats to score dates and win a girl's heart at the end.

Well, in the onsen she is still cute, I just find her cuter at the beach when she is finally surrounded by happy people and she starts to feel embarrassment for the first time.
Reni suffers from deep trauma and part of her route is to help her learn what it means to be a human, to accept good and bad feelings and things that aren't just being a machine-like soldier.
I'm probably not gonna play the route myself because I am faithful to Kanna. I don't know lol.

I never played it because I didn't like the character designs (cool mechas but sadly I dislike Tite Kubo) but from what I remember while it went okay at launch and people liked it enough back then even with its flaws. Now though it has a lot of longtime fans that dislike it alongside others who wished it could have been more.

I've played that and SW1 and I liked Shin more. A lot of that came down to Kamiyama being an extremely based protagonist
The only problem with Shin is that tried to reference the past games in probably the worst way possible. It's great fun whenever it isn't doing that.

Nope, she is completely robotic. She doesn't react at all when Ogami sees her naked (Ogami otoh runs away freaking out because he is surprised to find out she's female and also mortified by the accident).
She has no real reaction to it the morning after either and the other girls are a little worried for her (though it's like a two textboxes thing at most).

Reni only starts to open her heart around the others in Chapter 6, when she is brought to the actual troupe to play the protagonist role in The Blue Bird of Happiness. This is because she's starting to wonder what's the point of fighting at all now that she is finding out about love and affection.
As the reason why Reni starts so cold and distant, it's because she was part of a (I think failed?) secret project called "Wachstum", where children were harshly trained to become elite soldiers with enhanced spirit power. She is the only child who survived through the whole ordeal and as a result her heart was encased in ice.

So, I finished Sakura Wars 2. Overall, it was very good and I found it superior to the first game in many aspects, but 2 had a final boss that dragged on too long and who also loved repeating himself.
The final spirit armor was cool though and design-wise an improvement over a giant Satan when said Satan could have been piloting a spirit armor too.

I had fun. Though I picked a lot of wrong answers and missed many scenes and minigames. And I got a little disappointed with Maria's attacks, she was the hardest one to use for me, for a ranged attacker she doesn't reach very far. Sakura's special is busted for covering the whole map but she isn't that impressive outside of it. So Sumire, Kanna and Ogami were always my most used units, with Kohran and Iris as support.

Frankly I like this about her, she's funny

So after finishing the game I started reading the manga and watched the first set of OVAs. But then I went for the TV series and wtf, everything is so serious, there's lot of silent moments, even Iris that is always a ray of sunshine has that raped girl look. Probably not. The problem is the IP isn't really that great to begin with. It sustained itself early on because it was one of the first big waifu simulators (now there's tons of them) and was a big cross media thing (which they don't really do anymore), specifically through stage shows but the new characters didn't really catch on and the old character's performers are 50 plus and way too old to be pretending to be teenagers on stage which they were already pushing it doing it in their 20s and 30s.

I think Sakura Wars probably stands out more now than it did back then specifically because it really isn't that much of a "waifu simulator." I remember playing the original and being surprised that there was barely any romance in it. It's more of a harem type story where it's just a sequence of a girl having a character and then fading into irrelevance to make way for the next girl to have a character arc
