Yeah I'm rewatching it so when I see Hath 2 with my friend I can answer any questions something that they might have as a nongundam fan. They're going to watch CCA before the two films but the first thing that sticks out is how little the set up is for Gigi. I instinctly get 'yeah it's just newtype shenanigans' but Hathaway and Kenneth you can go 'yeah army things' but Gigi almost doesn't fit into the plot even though it revolves around her. I really think they should air these two together as a double function because while the first film doesn't really explain anything it's a lot more for a set up of 2. I felt like i would have to explain a lot more in the first film. I'm glad 2 is out so we can watch the first together and just go see the second in theaters right after. I know you might be joking, but you are probably half right. Japanese citizens are very detached from the reality of the world and war. They don't understand that som ethings can be cringe (like wearing the same clothing on national TV for years and refusing to change clothes), and Japanese citizens just assume that's normal. Its entirely possible the character designer saw the Ukraine war on the news, saw Zelensky, and said "I wanna design characters that look that." Japan is detached like that.

Okay I just watched the movie. I'm not sure if this is a complaint but I want to express my view on the final battle. English is not my first language so I hope I am conveying my thoughts well enough.

To me, the final battle didn't actually feel like a true battle. It felt like family or friends arguing with one another expressed through Gundam battle.

Xi Gundam and the Nu Gundam mobile armor kept shooting eachother. Dozens of missiles and beams were fired across the whole battlefield but they all missed. Lots of cockpit reaction shots and enotional frustration and yelling eachother's name. But no killing intent.

Even when Hathaway grabbed the mobile armor on the ground he didn't shoot the cockpit. Hathaway shot the arms off instead. Then when Lane had a clear shot, he wouldn't shoot to kill. This makes me question if they were really in a life or death battle.

There is a saying. They say a battle between masters only lasts a few moves. Any mistake leads to death.

But Hathaway and Lane Aim kept fighting for several minutes. They were dancing with eachother. It was more a spectacle than a fight. The attacks felt meaningless after a while. It ruined the momentum of the scene.

That was my one complaint with the final battle. There was no sense of "narrowly avoiding death" from each attack. Almost every hit was effortlessly dodged or blocked. It was like two brothers arguing with eachother and throwing fists. Expressing frustration but not trying to kill.

I hope you understand my meaning.

It doesn't help that Xi Gundam's rifle feels like a squirt gun. He unloaded like a 2 dozen shots directly into Nu Gundam and nothing happened. Plus Xi can't use any other weapons because the Director said they won't upgrade Xi Gundam for all the movies. Xi will remain with the same load out.

They are mostly not arguing with each other. Hathaway is going through a schizo episode and Lane is having his own 'fuck adults' rant.
Hathaway is a good pilot and a newtype, he dodged most of the shots but Lane is not at that level due to his lack of combat experience. Xi is also higher spec than Alyzeus, so this fight was one sided from the get go.
Hathaway also beam shot him up but Lane shed the flight form to bare MP Nu. Even that gets almost completely wrecked. Hathaway was on the verge of killing him before Gigi stepped in and saved his life.

I rewatched the battle again, and I could see Hathaway's tactics against the Alyzeus, at least until the CCA flashbacks, where things gets muddy.

To begin with, Hathaway and his gang are a guerilla force with limited resources and time, and a good chunk of Xi's cargo went unrecovered, that's why they couldn't afford to waste ammo. (Xi already spent a portion of it blowing up Gustavs)

Hathaway's strategy was to incapacitate the Alyzeus first before shooting at it because he knows it was a speedy boi and could easily dodge his beam rifle, so he used the Xi to toss the Alyzeus around and lured it within SAM range so it could get pelted by missiles.

Once he did all of that, Xi finally fired off a shot but the Alyzeus dodged it, and that made Hathaway so mad he started mag dumping on it. He did not shoot the arms off out of mercy, he did it to prevent any resistance once he unloads on it.

Hathaway was never in danger against Lane, the skill gap between them was too big. The only reason he went down in the end was because of Kenneth.

Was this 100% that the items were lost? I thought that perhaps they could have recovered them with some boats, submarines, or even Xi Gundam itself diving. The end of the last movie seems to imply they lost a ton of important Xi cargo like spare rifles and shields. But this movie seems to have solved it. I thought maybe they recovered the lost items. Renting a submarine to dive, latching a cable onto it, and retracting the items with a boat is something the world has done for decades. If Hathaway can get access to a spaceship or rocket, then GM renting a sub seems trivial.

How come the SAMs were so accurate but Alyzeus' missiles were pitifully inaccurate? The missiles vaguely went in Xi's direction but didn't even get close. And Alyzeus fired a lot of cluster homing missiles. Does the Minovsky drive generate some sort of Minovsky particle intefwrenxe.

But why not just shoot the cockpit if he's already that close? Alyzeus doesn't have anti-beam coating since beams just melt through the armor and blow off it's arms. Amuro wouldn't have wasted time with slowly disabling Alyzeus. He would have landed a cockpit shot and moved on.

Was he actually hitting anything? There was so much smoke I couldn't tell if the animators were being cheap or if the Alyzeus was exploding.

Mafty were in a rush, because they knew reinforcements are coming in, also, they had shit to do somewhere else because if you remember, HF's entire plot took place in just a week or so. Another thing is that the feds put the whole area under surveillance immediately after the Xi recovery, which makes sending a recovery crew to it impossible.

That boils down to skill issue. We knew Hathaway is a newtype so that pretty much explains his side. So far, Lane has yet to exhibit those abilities and the second movie shows how reliant he is to AI assist, so his NT status at this point is debatable.

Does Minovsky flight eliminate G-forces? Because the aerial battles are lacking a sense of "momentum". Hathaway isn't straining himself from pulling constant 12G turns to avoid missiles. He's just casually dodging. I think the Director overlooked this important aspect to dogfighting on Earth.
