Thread #43151047
To celebrate the launch of Artemis II and finally getting our asses back around the moon as a species. Let's have a Nasapone thread as I have not seen one it a while.

Lunar Gateway is in limbo right now waiting to see what will happen with ISS. Right now the plan is to have private companies have the low Earth orbit stations that lease out space to agencies to do science and the like.
Lunar Gateway was supposed to be the big step to help with whatever base is built and can be used as a "gas station" for whatever Mar mission happens in the next hundred years.
>>
>>43151065
>Right now the plan is to have private companies have the low Earth orbit stations
why would anyone host one privately? ISS was/is a giant waste of taxbux, I don't think there's enough interest in operating one by a private entityunless of course I miss some niche that could be taken by them. Something fancy for Starlink, maybe?

A lot of chemistry and pharmaceuticals that can produce higher quality things in low gravity. Or can only be made in low low gravity, so there is a business opportunity there. Varda is a good example of this

Her snowpity essence got absorbed into the universe itself. She's one with the moon and the stars. Everytime you look in the sky, and see a particular star shining slightly brighter than the rest, that's her. She's very much alive, and she's all around us.

Once nasa builds a space station, it becomes really easy to convince Congress to "keep funding resupplies to the existing space station"
This was one of the reasons to build ISS
This was pretty much the only reason to build gateway, just so it would be easy to convince Congress to keep funding resupplies to moon orbit. The science of lunar orbit is is barely incremental to science in LEO
I'm glad isacman scrapped gateway in replaced it with a lunar surface base, lots more fun stuff to do on the surface of the moon

inb4 people draw dicks on the lunar surface and NASA sending its agents to erase them every time. after a while, the moon is declared a restricted military zone and no civilian is allowed near it ever again. all because of some dicks. I just find that thought funny.

What a kino mission, we can still do things. It really has restored some of my faith in humanity. It was just such an amazing time following along with this and the crew was so fantastic, I really don't know how they can top these astronautsok imagine Dominick/Kim, Pettit, Pesquet/Gerst/Cristoforetti, and I guess the Canadian backup lady/some JAXA rep. They would've absolutely deserved to land on the Moon.
>>43167595
The quicker entry is actually supposed to help this chemistry as it's suspected the issue was that the prior skip entry with longer heating led to the gases being trapped in such a way as to damage the heat shield.

I do wonder about the elevator system as well, as cool as it is, it does make me curious as to what contingencies there are if it broke down while mid descent, or just overall.

>Do you think the Starship lunar lander is a good idea?
It's the only realistic choice SpaceX has (they could surely do a more traditional lander but it wouldn't make sense for them) and had the best technical rating in the selection (though that may be more because of how bad the other options were).
Tipping has definitely been a concern with all the commercial landers recently, Starship probably has a bit of an advantage with all the heavy engines on the bottom but from the outside it still seems like one of the big concerns.
The elevator is supposed to be "multi-fault tolerant" and you can easily come up with simple contingency measures like rope and winch or even just rope in some way, but we've not heard or seen much of those tolerances yet...
Most of all though I'm wondering how the fuck either SpaceX or Blue Origin is supposed to have a crew-accessible (i.e. surely requiring at least basic life support?) version of a lander ready a year from now. I think in-space testing for Artemis III is a great idea and I'm glad Jared is lighting a fire under their asses but man does it seem questionable. Blue doesn't even fully know what their lander is supposed to be yet and while SpaceX has in worked on their design for over five years now we've seen fairly little HLS-specific hardware and of course now it needs to be Ship V3-based and they've just started making those and ships already take the better part of a year to build and HLS then needs a lot of extra work. They better be doing HLS stuff to one of the ships still in factory or they need to start very soon.

I think it's almost certain that China is going to put mares on the moon before us. On the plus side, that will kick the space race into gear. There is only so much desirable real estate on the moon and both sides are aiming to claim even if they deny it. Even the biggest ice deposits are only a few miles across and access to them is very limited by step terrain. Also, once someone is established they can pretty reasonably request that nobody else lands within a few miles for safety and limiting dust.

They haven't a timeline as set more than before end of 2030, while NASA has set 2028.
Although I do think NASA will make it there before, I'm not very convinced it will be done like presented, especially with Starship and SpaceX not really looking to be on track and only managing to achieve less than half of the promised LEO payload capacity, and remaining challenges with launching all the fuel tanks, in-orbit refueling, HLS, and solving everything before the proposed mid-2027 Artemis III launch date.
>>
>>
>>
>>43176380
While China is nothing the scoff at, they haven't been doing tests like NASA has. The reason why NASA takes so long is because of budget and making sure shit doesn't go wrong. The loss of Challenger and Columbia was devastating and halted NASA for several years. We have to get it right the first time.

>I'm not very convinced it will be done like presented
There are some details that could be changed, but overall that is how it's going to be done. Both SpaceX and Blue Origin require multiple launches and while I have doubts whether SpaceX can be ready in a year, they are likely still ahead of BO with their HLS work. There is no alternative. As for Starship's payload capacity, that's their problem, they'd just have to launch more, it should be enough for the lander (also what do you mean, half the promised payload, 100t was always for Vn+1 with Raptor n+1, Vn is just a prototype, also don't you know Elon never makes promises just aspirations, you must have EDS, suborbital is basically orbit btw ^^^^^:)).

I'm very much stoked to see New Glenn fly again later this month, it's very nice to see BO actually be an orbital spaceflight company rather than the suborbital tourist kind it's been for years now. Not only launching rockets to space, but landing and soon about to be reusing boosters. It's good to have competition, it's about time some company is starting to catch up with SpaceX.

Yeah. They seem to be in constant danger of spreading themselves too thin and falling apart over morale after braindead management decisions so I hope they can keep it together but it's great to see BONG finally flying.
Also related, I wonder what'll happen with the Amazon KuiperLeo minimum satellite limit later this year, people generally expect them to get an extension but since FCC chair Carr is pretty much bought and paid for by SpaceX I think there's a nonzero chance he just kills their license on the letter of the regulations.

I loved the book, and liked the movie just as much! I'm glad you liked it!
Do we need... A Hail Mary pone? Who likes to spin?

Kek I drew that 7 years ago for a comic I barely started.
Shit, time flies...
I need to draw more of her sometimes.

I guess I'll have to read the book at one point and I should probably also finally watch the Martian, though /sfg/ always tells me it's cringe redditslop.
>they gave out this patch with popcorn
damn now I almost wish I got popcorn, though I very much doubt my cinema did this.

It is. The book has a bit of cringe in it but nothing over the top that ruins the experience. The quips and "oh my science" stuff in the movie really brings whole thing down.
