It's literally just a Les Paul plus a Zoom multi-effects toy. How do the guitar tones on this sound as good as they do and why doesn't every alternative rock record sound this nasty?

The original mastering (1995 Canadian CD) is good, the remasters on the boxsets are too glossy and don't hold together as well

because James Dean Bradfield is insanely talented. I don't know how you can take those lyrics and make something listenable yet thematically appropriate.

It goes harder and some parts are better (like the vocal samples in the chorus of The Intense Humming of Evil and the ending of Faster) but yeah it looses the muddy tone of the UK version.
