Not a vet but I go to SUNY and am good buddies with a few of them. I don't mind asking them any specific questions you might have and relaying it back.
You can apply to be something called a day student as a vet and be subject to less of the regimental bullshit and leave campus whenever you want to. The reg tried to pull some bullshit recently where they changed the qualifying criteria from 4 years active duty to 5 years which would have essentially disqualified every vet student, but they backed off on it. The week of indoc as a "boot camp" is a complete fucking joke, you'll have a harder time trying not to laugh in the face of the retarded 20 year old on a power trip screaming at you.
>>

Thanks. Could you ask them how vet friendly SUNY is? Did the GI Bill pay 100% of their tuition or did they still had to pay for some classes out of pocket?
Currently trying to weigh my options and pick a maritime academy for deck.

I had to look this up. What the fuck is this place? Is this where stolen valor forma del Navy SEAL people go once they get enough tickets piled up and figure they should actually try going to sea? You have to wear a fucking 80s muhreen uniform to do some casual surveying? What is going on here
Here in canuckistan we've got "maritime colleges" too, but they're just normal ass community college tier engineering or administration courses but ocean-themed. Literally just "Electro/Mech tech but you learn about sewage dumping laws"

All maritime academies require you to join a regiment if you're there for the license, some take the larping more seriously than others. Great Lakes is probably the most chill out of all the schools. They got a new commandant at SUNY so they've been cracking down like yelling at you if you're wearing a hat indoors.

Hello, first time posting here. I've revently aquired my MMC. I've got a TWIC card and my passport is coming soon. I want to travel the globe as a deckhand. I already have 7 months previous experience as a deckhand. I wanna work on a ship that goes across the ocean. Does anyone know of a company that's hiring?

Should I go back to the navy? I got at least my gunmetal SSI, so I'm not a real Sea Man. Should I remuster to weapons enginering or somethingor become a real big boy comms tech or some shit? This is obviously the only thing I can do and feel even vaguely competent towards. Even the stuff I was on boats for is not especially useful; I was in comms. I did some line-handling and force protection as required but what the hell do I do now

No, but Maersk has some US-flagged ships doing long haul.
Worth a shot, I guess, but I imagine the competition is insane considering what US seafarers make... I don't even know what the deal with those are cause they just can't be even remotely competitive. Are they just hauling weapons for the government?
>>
>>2065611
You also need a bunch of STCW certs to sail international. There are previous few commerical US flagged deep sea ships. The vast majority of american mariners who do deep sea sail with Military Sealift Command. USN auxiliar ships basically. The hiring process is glacial and opaque, but eventually you'll get all your training for free and all you pay is your sanity from an 18 month contract and spending your time with darkies from jacksonville who make up 99% of MSC unlicensed crew.

Sometimes Euro-flagged vessels have EU-only crew, wish it was more common, but on the other hand, I worked with Filipinos and they're okay. Thank God I haven't met any indian met, literally every guy I talked to has negative opinion about them.
>>2065549
Oh, that's neat. In my case it was similar, no spoiled nor shortage of food. But it's different with cooks and you can easily tell when they were lazy.
>>
Is it possible to turn my tard ranching security certs into a job on one of those cruise ships that fart around Alaska or the Caribbean? Got laid off from a different job and I'm working out my options.
A bunk and a paycheck with a good chunk of time off outside of cruise season seems like it might be a fun deal, since I save like a jew.

i believe most of these companies just contract it out to Garda or whatever so your best bet is probably joining one of those companies and then badgering your manager/hr people to put you specifically in a maritime environment

Is there any information on whether the unlimited able seaman sea service requirements will be ratified? I only have AB-special and ZERO deepwater seatime. It was 1080 days before, and it's 540 until the end of this year 2026.

Yes, but then they will be third world yuropoors.
>I worked with Filipinos and they're okay
Flips are mostly cool. I guess not all of them can handle the long contracts they're on (and the shitty people they sometimes have to deal with), which is understandable.
>Thank God I haven't met any indian met, literally every guy I talked to has negative opinion about them.
Rightfully so. The more they care about their retarded caste system and religion, the more awful they are, it seems. Met two decent guys, and one of them was tamil and disliked the other Indians (hindus)...

lmao, that sounds like a higher level of boredom
In my case, I started learning how to draw. Nothing serious, just downloaded one book and do what the author says and also copy some nice pictures I find on the internet. At least I spend time more actively.
Aside from that, I also watch anime and read books.
>bought camera and lenses last summer and started learning how to take photos, started posting on /p/.
Nice photo. I was thinking about doing that too, because I really like sightseeing. Will probably buy some used camera for ~200 euros to learn basics and see if I even like it.

I commented here a while back about getting into the field, but I was dumb and didn't quite understand what I was doing. Still dumb, but I used Deepseek to put together the credentials I need for working as a deckhand, and so far I've acquired my TWIC. My goal atm is to work on the great lakes, on any kind of ship desu. I just want the experience and to get started, but it looks like everyone wants an MMC, so I'm wondering how the fuck do I start off? I've been thinking about the SIU, but I contacted them and the waitlist to enroll is 1 year, and another year to get through the program. I don't really intend on fucking off to Maryland to attend some academy, I'd rather just work my way through things and get experience. I'm based out of Michigan, metro-Detroit, but I'm willing to go all over the state for work. Just don't want to leave my home state, we've got plenty of ports and the rest of the country doesn't leave me very impressed. Shit sucks here, but it's still far more affordable than the nightmare rents everywhere else.

I should get back into photography on board. Left my old Canon back home for the last three contracts.
I also don't like watching movies alone but series I can do easily. Besides that it's the gym, books and a niche card game I like to play, provided there are others who like to play or are willing to learn.

Got my orals for my OOW unlimited ticket on Friday. Looking forward to stepping up from being a slimy little cadet. Looking forward to getting real money and going back to sea.
What are people's thoughts for further career advancement? Obviously, chief mate then masters tickets, but aside from that? Was wondering if a naval architecture degree might be an aid if I wanted to go shoreside into surveying.
Also post your most beautiful seapics.

1 more coz why not
Accommodation is forward. So i always get this back facing lights ruing my photos even if dimmed or turned off. The flood light for ex were off and that is some residual light. They don t turn of completely so long exposure. 4s for these photos is enough to make them look like on.
But on a vlcc from fwd you could get some nice composition with the milky way and the accommodation especially if you sail souther hemisphere . Depending on your rank or how normal headed are the officers you could ask them to alter course for a couple of minutes so you can get a nice composition

Hello, I've just received my medical certificate to complete my documents for work as an OS. I thought that would've been the hardest part of the journey into the maritime industry, but now I'm finding out that landing that first OS job on any boat period is nigh impossible. I saw a video a couple of days ago saying as much, and that you should expect to be out of a job for close to a year or even more before you can land your first position. Is this true?
I didn't go to any academies and I don't have the money for SIU. I went to Sea School for my STCW and VPDSD. I can't get so much as a "fuck you" letter from anywhere I've applied to.
Are there any sure shot companies out there besides ACL (I've already done my 28 week contract as a deckhand and they don't seem to want to hire me as a senior for whatever reason). I'm in desperate need of work and I don't wanna go back to typical wagecuck bullshit.
>>
>>2067766
I went to Sea School in Charlestown South Carolina. Spent the week sleeping in my car around the city. It's a few classes, paper tests, you train on a CPR dummy, do some exercises and maneuvers in a pool, and get dressed up in fire fighter gear before going into a training house to practice maneuvering in a smoky environment. It was over 100F when I went, and the suits made it even hotter.
Just look up the Sea School website and see when and where they're hosting courses. Also try to pick up your VPDSD while you're there so you can work internationally. I got lucky that they were doing it the day after the STCW shit ended and that there were JUST enough people to keep the course from being canceled.

Due to 4s shutter speed.
It took 4 sec to take this foto. All lights are amplified.
The only light on the bridge facing aft were 2 monitors on night mode.
Pic related is a 10s pic i took in malta
I was in almost pitch black darkness. I had to use the flashlight to see where i m going. But with 10 sec pic it looks like daylight
>>
>>2068360
You don't do actual firefighting? I had three days at firefighting school before I went out as a cadet, and five days before I went out as an officer (the same three day course and another two days on top). Firefighting on a mock-up ship with actual fire, silly obstacle course with pipes and narrow passageways you had to crawl through, rescue exercise on a mock-up ship filled with smoke. They had us in a shipping container in full gear where they lit a huge burner to demonstrate how hot things get - like an extreme sauna.
>>2068363
Idk man. I do know how cameras work. It still seems too bright.
>>
>>2068373
You don't spray the fire down, but they teach you about flashover, how to do a search, not to go more than a few feet into a room, how to put on the gear, activate the respirator, how to use a hose and the different spray patterns. We did the fire in a shipping container thing, so hot it stopped feeling hot.
Also, would you be able to hook me up with a job? I'm a very dependable sailor with previous experience with American Cruise Lines. I served on the Mississippi, in Chesapeake Bay, Cape Cod, and on the Hudson. Please, I'll take anything. I'll even give you a cut of my wages.
>>
>>2068374
>You don't spray the fire down
Sounds like they cheaped out on the training. This was supposed to be an STCW course, yeah?
>Also, would you be able to hook me up with a job?
I don't think so. I'm not even in the game anymore. Apply to every company that has US-flagged ships, I guess, but I'm not American, so I don't know how you guys do things. >>2065642
>>
>>2068387
Well, searching up "US flagged ship OS opening" DID lead me to one potential position I hadn't seen, so I thank you for that at least. Though, I'm not sure if they'll be hiring an American from Bumfuck, North Carolina. All the potential cities and airports were some names I couldn't pronounce, so I had to click "other". The application was in English though.

First contracts are always the hardest to get, try mailing your CV to any crewing agencies (Vships, Trident Maritime, OSM Thome) and also crewing matchmaking websites (MaritimeZone, Yotspot if you are into yatching) (be aware of who you send your data and keep an eye on potential scamers, this is getting out of hand D:).
And if you made contacts, use them!! Its always worth the try.
How much it will take to get a contract and how long it will be will depend mainly on your CITIZENSHIP (sad but true), and after that rank, flag of the ship and employer... The filipinos on my ship usually do up to 8 months OB without taking into account their experience. Other nationalities (moroccans, hondurans, eu-citizens, ukranians) normally do between 2 to 4 months.

>31 Year old Brit with nothing going for him
Be brutally honest /n/, how is the market looking for UK engineering officers? I've been looking at it for a while, but circumstances meant I couldn't until this year. The idea of going through those 3 years only to result in fuck-all jobs is the only thing giving me pause

>2nd Mate going back to MSC from AMO because there were no jobs on the board and I was tired of sailing 3rd (no advancement on my tanker)

>seething that I couldn’t get on a T-AGOS and do something cool, cause these MARAD guys are telling me “oh yeah we actually do have 2/m and 3/m

>already got my big bonus and signed for 3 years with MSC so I just have to sit here and take it as we go to war with Iran
>thinking I got fucked
>then I start hearing that the AMO board has gotten worse and it’s over half a year for a job
>and an AMO ship in the TSP was chased by Iran and then got a fire on their ship because their dry dock in the Middle East was getting raped, ended up evacuating
>Jones Act is being waived for 2 months is probably a test run for a more permanent fucking-over of the industry
>AMO just lost the T-AGOS contract and never got some other contracts it swore it would get, and just keeps going downhill
Maybe this was all for the best

It feels like all of the unions are losing out on shit. Either they got too greedy or the union officials are shitheads and often times it's both. But somehow the people who actually have to work, always get fucked. SIU bet hard on filling the union with the immigrants who'll work for pennies and don't care about the politics of the union, as well as hood trash from Jacksonville who might care alittle more but will keep their heads down. (I'm more suprised the Jax hiring hall can find someone who can actually pass a drug test)
I'm in a similar position the SIU job board is incredibly slim pickings right now, and i need stable work, i know that this industry isn't "Stable" like a 9-5,but i dont want to deal with union politics, their exhausting. The only real downside with MSC is how long it takes to get hired. I have my AB ticket, and i put in an application but with how bureaucratic and vague the hiring process is, it's a miracle that anyone can get hired.

Did my contract, got out, got my OS and everything, and now I find out that it's impossible to get a job. Everyone experiences it to varying degrees and from what I experience and I'm aware you can't get rid of it, comes back at the next hitch. Social media becoming saturated with people letting the secret out has resulted in the industry being flooded by absolute retard entry level applicants. Entry level has always been cutthroat to get hired, its way worse now than ever. You need to have AB or QMED to open up your job options.
Licensed officers have lots of job options but theres literally less than 100 unlimited tonnage American flagged ships, so the majority of people work limited tonnage.

>>2074372 If you can't handle it, you can try to move to another ship type. Or find a company which rotates people within weeks. It was comfortably doable back when the crew was more and the workload less. Now 4 months for an officer equals to 8 months in reality.

Motivation, 3rdies support their whole family including the extended families.

I did my first contract as a cadet 20y ago with no internet, laptop or mobile with me, and doing 14 hr a day deck work coz the captain wanted some fucking medal and i was just an extra slave paid pennies. But i needed those months to get my oow license and also was kind of the norm back then for cadets and ratings tto do min 6 months shifts.
Since then i did a 5.5 months hitch as a c mate but the vessel had weekly ar bi weekly calls in my home city and was running home to fuck my gf and see my family and buddies so was manageable.
Except that 3.5 months was my max and only of the shift is easy job without any bs going on or i need to arrange that i get summer and winter holidays at home

So if I get a yacht to live on, what are the challenges of doing so with a specialized twin keel boat?
Can I just live on U.S. costal waterways for like 10 months with a cruising permit and a vessel registered with a different country to avoid paying tariffs? If doing is the case, what country on the way from the UK boat yard to the Bahamas and Keys would be best for registering a vessel after getting the builder certificate and stuff?
Would I be getting myself into too much trouble sailing single handed on blue water, knowing things could go very wrong?
What tools would a person bring aboard to make fixing the boat easier?

I would be fancier and get the Cromarty, but my sights are on a Moody S31, Cause I don't mind the idea of a months long voyages if I have radio, electricity, desalination unit, and fish. I'd just read and listen to music under diesel power at night with my mast reefed up. Collect water in jugs from the sink for emergency (in case something breaks down).
We should both get sail boat liveaboards and have a race.
