I'm actually considering two in my Suburban. They would be more SQ orientated with a good SQ mids and highs setup up front with dedicated amps. I just upgraded my electrical system so it could easily handle it. Then again it's a lot of time, effort and money into a old vehicle that could get stolen or broken into.

I'm gonna get pic related. Just something to round out the factory system. If I had a nicer car I might put 2 8's or 2 10's in it like I did in high school. Big bass stuff is obnoxious to listen to even inside the car.

Sorry for triple posting, but have any of you dynamatted a cheap car just to improve the cabin sound? Its a Ford Maverick so its not the greatest thing in the world, and not particularly luxurious. Seems like Dynamat (rubber sound deadener/insulation) is still reasonably cheap, could I spend a weekend applying that shit to the sheetmetal in the cabin just to improve road noise and temperature, or is it a fruitless venture that won't give me the results I'm wanting?

I did a bunch of generic bitumen/aluminium deadener on my MX5. Primarily, it was for road noise and heat transmission through the tunnel. I then put thick moving blankets over top (and some aluminized foil over top just for the trans tunnel for heat) and laid my carpet back on top. Definitely made a change, though not huge for sound. I'd have to do a side by side with an untreated one to compare I suppose.
I wrote a lot and deleted it. And then I did a shitty paint.
It's broken down into 2-4 steps.
The metal vibrates. Lower notes are high energy, higher notes are low energy. Deadener sucks the energy out of those high notes, but does nothing for lower (road noise). Chuck the carpet back on and the deadened metal is still basically vibrating and ignoring the thin, worn carpet.
You want to trap the noise between a layer of thick dense textile, and thick dense vinyl/rubber. Decoupling it.
Honestly, you would do better to just lay thick blanket over the chassis and top it with thick rubber./vinyl before putting your carpet back on, versus deadening your entire car with bitumen. The key is to meet in the middle and do both.

You can imagine how hot that bitch got in the standstill summer. It was enough to make it painful to rest your calf on the tunnel for more than a few seconds even with the carpet.
Unfortunately for me, a lot of the noise transmission was through the rear parcel shelf. I did deaden that, add some thick moving blankets and laid the *stock vinyl decoupling sheet* and trim back on top. Did NOT do wonders for the sub in the back lmfao. Made it easier to hear music through the door speakers, though.

Driver A - 90db, 200WRMS
Driver B - 93db, 100WRMS
Driver A needs twice the input power to match driver B's SPL output. Suddenly,a driver that seems twice as powerful really isn't.
If Driver B was 96db sensitivity, Driver A needs four times the power input to match the SPL. A 100W amp probably costs a bit less than a 400W amp.
Every 10db is a human-perceived doubling of loudness, so the 96db driver is going to sound 50% louder than the 90db unit at the same power input. *
*Then we get into Fs and tuning, ported, sealed, etc etc etc.
I had such a hardon for the TC Sounds 5100 PRO, but I never got to import one before they folded and prices skyrocketed. Sensitivity, power AND a decent amount of excursion. Alas.

How was the process in general? Just rip out everything in the car without breaking too many push clips, apply deadener, and then reinstall trim/carpet/seats? How was the temperature inside after? Not just burning your leg on the tunnel, i mean was your AC heating and cooling faster, and generally you wanting to turn it lower since it was held in so well?
When you say generic bitumen deadener, is that similar to dynamat? AI only suggested the cheaper alternatives have an asphalt smell offgassing for months and I know asphalt is bitumen.

That tells me the sound deadening on your rear bulkhead worked good for noise. Did you do the front firewall, doors, and roof and still think its too much road noise? Is that because of stiff springs on your mx5?

What do I need an 18 inch for. The only music that goes lower than 35-33 is either synthetic or very rare orchestra stuff.

Bigger speaker moves more air. More air moving means more buttery biscuit bass. Some people just kinda like their vision going blurry with bass tracks. You're not going to get that with high end 6" subwoofers, or even consumer grade 10's. Its a completely different experience if, and only if, you really like that sensation. The bonus side effect is you annoy everyone around you within 4 city blocks.
I am a little curious why more small speaker deep coil subwoofers don't exist. Can't you get really good bass from like 2 6" speakers and a small ported enclosure?

100db is ten times more hearing damage than 90, I don't need any more than that.
a 500 watt 10 inch with flat response down to 30hz is just fine. I run it at 1/3rd power and never have complaints. it will last me the rest of my life.

Process was simple. I stripped the carpet, in my case it was pre-moulded with a scant adhesive applied to hold a very thin layer of that moving-blanket felt material. CLeaned the surfaces before applying the generic stuff (no smell, ever). I used the smooth head of a 3/4" ratchet to 'roll' it out. I haven't used dynamat, but I feel like it would be a 90% equivalent.
With the MX5, the trunk is separated by a reasonable amount of chassis. Ironically, a lot of the NVH comes from this large surface area so yes, it worked well!
I did not do the firewall, but I did 50% of the doors inner panel. I didn't do the hardtop, though now that I think about it, hardtops stiffen the chassis so it only stands to reason they transmit a decent amount of noise.
Frankly, an NA MX5 will always sound like a tank compared to anything relatively new. Almost any car I drive in, feels like the cabin is full of cotton balls in comparison but chucking a few hours of elbow grease and $150 in deadener, yeah I'd do it again.

Oh - as for the heat. Massive, massive reduction in heat transmission from the tunnel. Unfortuantely I'm too lazy to fix the A/C and the heater core and flap assembly works in such a way that the rubber foam gaskets have broken down and leak, which is great because the heater core in the NA constantly cycles block coolant.

I would call you out on that. 2 12's have almost the same surface area as an 18, and 18's inherently hit a lot lower, with higher efficiency, without having to be pushed loud and you can spread the response out.
It's one of those things where if you haven't experienced it, you just don't know.
You get a lot of those david v goliath drivers, like sundown ZV6's in transmission lines vs generic 12's in a generic ported box but the reality is you can spend just as much time on a nice enclosure with the generic to eke out that displacement, too.
