This thread AGAIN.
Can u wrench? I bought the nicest E34 I could find and it cost me about 2k USD per year to keep maintain if I don't work on it myself.
Because of some of the down time waiting for parts when I do work on it myself I can't use it some of the time, not a big deal bc I don't use it to commute to work.
Mine is not a low maintenance car even though it's arguably the most reliable 5 series with the most low maintenance engine, and in excellent condition. If you buy a shit BMW you will have a shit time and want to kys yourself. If you need to rely on it or can't wrench/have no money to fix it just fucking forget it. Don't be a retard. buy the nicest one you can or don't buy it at all

Its an M50. They are bullet proof. No engine problems in the whole time I've had it, the thing is like a sewing machine. Any V8 BMW is asking for trouble. M30 is also good but a bit more agricultural. I cbf doing regualr valve clearances in my daily.

The engine doesn't have to break for a car to be expensive to maintain, there's a ton of suspension and steering parts, pumps and shit that are wear parts and with that many years anything can go at any time.

The old pushrod V8 engines were very stout due to being extremely american in design, side for being all aluminium.
The M60 also is fairly retard proof, it's only from the M62 onwards when they started cutting costs and going all plastic is when they suck shit.

both the OHVs and M60s are reliable engines.
There was a time you could get V8 E34s for like a hundred bucks over here, the weakest link was always the automatic transmission, but the V8s never skipped a beat.

sweet spot for BMWs is the mid ranges. Don’t get a 4 pot or a V8 or 12, stick to the sixes. And don’t get a diesel they’re miserable. Automatics suit the cars better for the most part especially if you’re looking at the cheap end of the market as the manuals are thrashed, overpriced shit and weren’t great new anyway. M SPORT shit ruins the ride so opt for comfy spec
I’d basically get the best N/A I6 you can and enjoy it for what it is. Boomer cruise it

Fuck you're right, he did say"shittiest bmw", so a salvage title e39 530 or 40 with the M62 ot is

I'd disagree about the diesels. I like M57s, they're quite neat, have heaps of torque and are the last hurrah from a time when BMWs were actually good cars.
There's also the meme engines like the M67 or that quad turbo diesel straight 6

e34 was kinda hard to maintain even when they where current cars. still my favorite "normal" car of all time.

lol, no they're not. they're fragile, had multiple cracked heads, burnt valves because of valve springs material fatigue.

Idk man maybe you got a lemon or one that had a hard life. My M50 been great and the general consensus online is that they’re rock solid. Just don’t overheat it and service it and you’re good to go. Cooling system is the only real weak point on the E34s, the rest of the issues I’ve encountered are mostly standard 30 year old luxury car type stuff (fuel pump failure, worn suspension, electrics going wonky etc).
