I have an opportunity to acquire a 91 850i.
It’s a 35yo car
I’ll just be a weekend car.
Is this v12 problematic?
I hear these models were built well. No plastic or cheap rubber.

Of the v12 powered cars of that era, the BMW is the most reliable. It’s a cool car, but will require upkeep from falling apart. If you can’t keep up with maintaining it, sell it before it becomes crap.

If you have to ask...

That's like winning the special Olympics. You're still retarded at the end of the day.

manual or auto? extremely comfy high speed cruiser.
parts will be rather expensive though. some seals etc. you can only get from germoney

The V12 is actually surprisingly stout. Your main enemies will be general old car issues, the sheer number of maintenance items (lol dual redundant fuel systems and three ECUs) and model specific parts being annoyingly expensive.

If you can deal with it then it's basically the ultimate croozer, slower than you think it is but enormously comfortable and stable and god is it a good looking car.
>>
>>28914999
Yeah it will nickel and dime you big time and it might not work perfectly all the time so if u are an autist who can't stand when stuff is broken maybe get something else.
>>
>>28915041
There are no redundancies on that engine.
>>
>täeven thinking about plastic engine mcdonalds strut on all 4 corners arab leasebait mohammed mobile
Just don't
>>
>>28914999
Maybe if its already mint. Anything else and you will just bash your head trying to fix and then nobody will want to buy it from you.
>>
>>28914999
It's a collectors car. You can buy it if you already have at least 3 other cars.
>>
>>28914999
If you loved the cost of rockers/lifters and timing chain on a V6 you're going to get double that for a v12.

HOT

>There are no redundancies
Correct. If any one of those ECUs goes bad, then the car stops.
>>
>>28915445
It doesn't, it'll keep limping home with the other bank
>>

You will deal with German problems

You will also deal with 2x / 3x of everything because those krauts were so uncreative they just bolted 2 inline 6's at the crank and did fuck all to streamline the mechanics.

TWO throttle bodies
THREE ecus
TWO Fuel pressure regulators
Amongst other things

However it is objectively the best looking thing the Germans ever made and you can do drive bys in them thanks to not having a giant B pillar in the middle of the door.

If you're not a pleb
If you're not a poser
If you are actually mechanically and electrically inclined
If you have the tools
If you have the garage
If you can commit to throwing away any semblance of savings
If you don't care about single digit MPG from the V12
Then yeah, get that car.
However if you know you're not him
If you know you don't got what it takes
If you know you'll fold under pressure

Then just go get that civic and learn the basics from an inexpensive platform.

>>28915446
That's like saying if I throw a rod, then I can limp it home on the other cylinders, hardly a redundancy.

> they just bolted 2 inline 6's at the crank

I really don’t like this desu. Good info.
>>
>>28914999
it will need a full rotisserie restoration, replacing every single piece of rubber and plastic basically

You can do it

It wain't that hard
>>
>>28915486
I may hate krauts, but I will say 1 thing about them.
They make good inline sixes.
However, do you think that gets doubled or halved when mated to the crank?
Only time can tell and only soft handed faggots have 850s now so we will never truly know their capabilities because they're hijacked by posers.

Man, I wish I had the space and money for a project car like that.

Just out of curiosity, OP. What are you going to pay for it?

Like a year or two ago, one was floating around the BMW dealership in my city, going for a laughable 10k, so I asked what the deal with it is:
>engine lightly fucked
>3 fingers fit between the tire
and wheel arch on one side
>2 on the other
So a white niche car buyer, who we should assume is a reasonable driver, unlike some half-black turk hooner, was capable of bending the frame and ruining the engine's idle, in a well-maintained city with no potholes and rounded curbs.
This information is anecdotal and take from it what you want
Also
>the wipers have active pre-tension control

Do it you won't be dissapoint
Absolutely Solid Machine
>>
>>28915486
Why is that a bad thing?
>>
Why are you asking about this car like it's on the lot? Is the engine problematic? It's a 40 year old V12. If you are a wrenchlet this car, and any 40 year old car, is not for you.
These cars are for two types of people idjits and people who own every tool and a multi-process welder.

Wait till this guy learns about individual throttle bodies he's gonna FREAK
>>
>>28915653
ITBs are mechanical, and doesn't have a TPS per TB. Nice try tho
>>28915558
Anon, I know you were never told this but the exception is not the rule.
Cool to see SOMEBODY thug it out, so thanks for that.

Oh yeah because that's how it works. You just bolt two blocks together at the crank.
>>
>>28915667
If you took that literally then congratulations on discovering your autism diagnosis anon.

Go look at the fucking blocks you loser, they're literally I6s from that era of beamRz
>>
>>28915687
Heads* and the block
Sheesh
>>
Checked and YES
I am kinda jealous of you OP
How much are you going to pay for it?

4hp series has a problem with the shaft seals. As they degrade, they will allow the drive and reverse clutch packs to simultaneously engage and cause immediate failure of the clutch pack A, resulting in no forward drive gears. Do not rev the engine in park or neutral until you know the shaft seals have been replaced with Teflon seals, or modifications have been made to let the pressure bleed off.
>>
>>28915687
Well the block would be totally different, and it happens to be alloy instead of iron in the M20
