/r/ is gone so might as well update it
also old wiki link was archive.is, which is discouraged these days in favor of .today, which redirects to .is .md .whatever
>>
>>4510764
the wiki is a portal in time back to twelve years ago nevertheless. no mention of mirrorless cameras in the buying guide and a reference to "the cake is a lie..." I haven't heard that in TEN YEARS
what's the point of directing newbs to such an outdated wiki? update it or scrub it.

We should have a policy of hostility towards gearfags who are not wealthy enough to have gear worth admiring or chill enough to admit their used snoy is convenient junk. Like /gg/ on /mu/ - if you can’t afford a gibson, shut up. If your squier is so great, play it and show us. >inb4 you don’t.

Most of the gearfags on /p/ don't actually care about image quality. I've posted hard proof of 600MP+ of real resolution from 8x10 scans scanned on a freaking flatbed scanner, links to 1000MP 4x5 wetplates, shots taken with nearly 15k worth(not spent) of gear and crickets.
The only thing that matters for most is AF performance, 1 million iso noise, charts, grams of weight, and inches of lens length. It's a constant argument between shills of things that don't really matter. All publicity is good publicity, so a constant shill argument about accessible options will sell the most cameras.
There is no subjective assessment because aesthetic is impossible to argue for so all the gearfag shills simply recite charts and stats about their favorite camera. The scientists photographing charts are NOT the arbiters of aesthetic. Only a fool or dedicated snapshitter would ever think that.

The great gearfag convergence will be when cellphone cameras are indistinguishable from MILCs and this is 100% inevitable for /p/. Whether it is from ai enhancement or alien sensor technology. Just give it a few years.
Rant over. Thank you for reading my blog.

5k lens, 2k 8x10 camera, 2.5k gitzo carbon tripod, 2k arca swiss cube tripod head, 2k speedotron 4800ws flash charger, 1k in 2400ws speedotron strobes, 400 for 3 c stands, 400 dollar hand painted back drop, 3.5k dog from one of the best GSD breeders in the country.

I use a 500 pack of kodak azo paper I spent 800 dollars on to make contact prints with the most expensive, most toxic developer, amidol, that produces the best looking contact prints. I've already spent over 10k on enlargers(45vxl, and a leitz 35v focomat), an 11x14 RA4 capable print processor, and a permitting person for a bespoke darkroom that hasnt even gotten through permitting approval yet. Ill be spending almost 4k on a 10 foot sink made from 316 stainless steel before even considering hiring a contractor, plumber, electrician, and HVAC guy to build out my 10x14 darkroom space that will be capable of making 20x24 sized prints.

After all that I feel generous enough to scan my negatives, downscale 500MB tif files to 4mb and share my work with you little cunts. Dear god I wish someone on this god forsaken website would get on my level.
On average my egg pictures take over 5k in gear to photograph. :) I've been using a vintage brass barrel lens I picked up for 2k to take some soft focus egg shots as well, so call it 6k when you see one of those next time.
Oh yeah... I have a leaf aptus 3 MFDB, which is the same company as phaseone, that I'm going to basically never use again becuase I spent 600 dollars on an adapter that lets me use a 700 dollar 645 filmback on my 2.5k sinar hy6. The hy6 is a better camera than the real, non chinese, hasselblads. I can list off the value of the 7 lenses I have for the system if you'd like. Just ask nicely.

This poster is exactly why if you don't have the actual best gear, you should shut up and work on your composition skills before your ego overinflates kek. I think nice gear brings something in itself, and I mean, like, actual nice gear. If someone has a leica m11 or the newest hassellad, or a phase one trichromatic back or iq180, that's really cool, we don't see that every day. When was the last time we even saw an anon who actually had the newest sony? Never. Ancient MF like hassy H3ds and sub-$3k phaseone kits? Nah. Not impressive. Same pics as FF. A GFX100SII isnt even that amazing desu. If your gear is so attainable, shut up and shoot. It’s just a footnote and doesn’t warrant bringing up when it wasnt even used for the photo at hand.
>BUT I LF FILM?
LF film shooters developed their good reputation by talking about their photos and not really talking about their gear because it's all generic/interchangeable, and how much they paid doesn't mean anything unless they got a good deal. They often build their own cameras because an LF camera is literally a box rigged to a few poles. Please don't tarnish that.

I've considered getting a trichromatic back + a couple blue ring lenses and XF body, but I'd rather drop the 20-30 grand on getting my darkroom built.
I also have 100 sheets of 8x10 ektachrome 100VS in my freezer that I need to get through first. I have my slide film processed by a lab and each shot ends up costing a little less than 25 dollars. I've considered dropping the 4k on a jobo processor and one of the 8x10 drums that does up to 5 sheets at a time, but I don't think I have the space, and I don't shoot enough c41/e6 for it to be worthwhile.
Depending on how much I like RA4 printing that could change. Just imagine RA4 contact prints...

Here's a test shot I took with the 100VS. 8x10 slides are really quite cool to look at in person.

What camera do you have? My guess is a sony a6600 with kit zoom.

I would have hoped you understood this, but I do still life as a way to practice composition, lighting, camera operation, and artistic expression/creativity. It's not a fixation. It is creative restraint that I've chosen to stick with for almost a year now, and seen huge improvements in my photography even outside of still life work. Working with an 8x10 camera and contact printing isn't a fixation either. I found the photographic process I enjoy the most and I've spent thousands of hours practicing it at this point because I really do love it. The novelty of using big camera has worn off long ago and now it is simply the tool I've chosen to create with. It still really excites me when I first see my prints and again when they're framed and on the wall, but the camera operation is just relaxing fun that allows me make negatives that I can contact print at this point.

Yeah here is the 600MP+ shot. I can't post the full 8x10 because my shop was insanely messy and I dont want you to see, but this crop is roughly the size of half a 35mm negative. I used one of the sharpest 8x10 lenses ever for it, and only like f11 to minimize diffraction. No sharpening in post. If I used a dslr to scan the neg I bet the words on the bottles would be fully legible.
600MP is assuming this crop has roughly 5MP of resolution lol. I used foma100 for this shot also.

Heres the wetplate link. My wetplate technique is not nearly as good as this guys, so I wouldn't be able to pull raw resolution like this, but it doesn't really matter for producing pleasing plates. You still get a very beautiful tonality and look from wetplate regardless. Wetplate grain size is on an atomic scale.

I'm going to be spending the same amount or more on a professional level darkroom once I get my permits approved to start building it.
The room will be 10x14 in dimension and will be fully plumbed with temp controlled water, humidity and temp controls, negative pressure HVAC system for ventilation and a completely dust free environment, and a custom made 316 stainless 10 foot sink that will allow me to make up to 20x24 prints. I have a motorized beseler 45vxl with color head that will be wall mounted for everything up to 4x5 enlargements.
I'm still waiting for a good deal on an 8x10 conversion kit for my beseler, but I think you either have it converted and only do 8x10 or non-converted and standard film holders fit for everything up to 4x5.
I'm fine with just contact prints for now, but enlarging 8x10 sounds fun. I'm extremely interested in seeing one of my egg pictures printed to 20x24. Just imagine this one printed huge.

I simply don't want it. I already use a much better and more powerful camera almost everyday.
I will say that the phase one XF body is incredibly cool and pretty inexpensive all things considered. I think you can use one of the older 50MP backs with it and mamiya lenses to get a really powerful camera for not 30k, but shooting digital just doesn't spark joy like a 40lb camera that takes me 2 hours to compose and take a single shot does.

Once I get my darkroom built you think this would be a good first picture to print on 20x24 paper?

German shepherds, huskies, and pitbulls are the unholy trinity of shitty dogs for shitty people

It only took you three years, ten different cameras, and most of your dignity to take TWO good photos. By the time you take three you will be $20,000 poorer and being investigated for sex crimes.

Wow. Thanks for the compliment! I took that one almost 3 years ago. :) I've been doing 8x10 eggs for about a year and 8x10 in general for around 2.

Please tell your mother I apologize. I simply could not resist her hot cross buns.

The guy who fucking started this mutant deformed dog breed i hope he suffers in hell. The only gs that should be accepted should be working gsd, the ones that look like normal dogs not the ones with fucked up back legs.

That was taken with a graflex xlsw with the old style 47mm super angulon and horseman 6x9 back. Super fun and simple camera that costs under a grand. The dust was free. :D

I was never complimenting the terrible practice photos you took of your mutt. The two egg photos you posted ITT are the only good photos you have ever posted here.

Everything else has been pretty garbage, every bit as bad your husky owning alter ego’s landscapes.

Thank you for the compliments, angry lil guy. If you post some exceptional work, like I have, I would love to return the favor and give you some big props as well. :)
