1) Solar is incredibly polluting. The amount of oil necessary to mine, let alone refine, the materials and get them to market is HUGE, and worst...it's all up front. Check out will prowse's solar carport project on YouTube. The panels were a tiny fraction of his costs compared to the concrete work.

It's a huge problem that as solar has gotten much cheaper everything else has gotten so much more expensive, so the only practical way to get a return on panels is to dump them in the desert propped up by sticks.
Lots of guys on the diysolarforum just leave them laying on the ground or propped up against walls and get 1-2yr ROI.
