Both Lumet and Chayefsky were from the 1920s-1950s golden era of New York/Broadway plays, screenwriting, motion pictures and early TV. Chayefsky omly became aware of and specifically active in Zionism in early190s, several yaers after the .Six-Day War. (Prior to the 1970s Arab oil embargo barely any Americans let alone American Jews knew or cared that Israel even existed or what-where it was.)
For the filming of 'Network' (released 1976) Chayefsky rejected both Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave in what became Faye Dunaway's role in that film. Redgrave was later picketed at the 1978 Academy Awards accepting for her role in the film 'Julia' (where during her remarks she denounced the ultrazionist protesters) by the extreme right wing ultranationalist Rabbi Kahane, who had also said that 20th Century Fox should never have hired her. In the 1978 Academy Awards ceremony picketed by extremists, Chayefsky later said of Redgrave's awards acceptance remarks: "a simple thank you would have sufficed."
