Why are we friends with Korea again? Look at the comically bad quality. The solder join failed on every LED after 5 years in a LG refrigerator control panel.

Back when I was working as a handyman I found out every single 24 inch fridge it was possible to buy for less then $1000 had the exact same compressor from the same factory in China and had a solid 40% failure rate per year. The compressor would fry the circut board with back emf, every single fucking time.

These LEDs don't work on 3 volts. What does that mean?

my LG tv from 2010 is still working perfectly fine and has no problems with the picture quality.
my other lg tv from 2022 has dead pixels and the corners look dim and i had to jailbreak it to remove the fucking ADVERTISEMENTS ON THE FUCKING HOMESCREEN ON THE DEVICE THAT I PURCHASED

my moms kitchenaid (whirlpool) fridge quit working, freezer worked. there's a fucking fan that blows the freezer air up into the fridge part. fan is pointing down, nothing holding the blade on except friction fit on a smooth metal pin, AND the force of the fan blades is such that it wants to force the fan blades OFF THE PIN WITH IT'S OWN DOWNFORCE
i can't believe it lasted as long as it did. i stuck it back on and it's working for now. fuckin bullshit.

add a resistor in series with the LED

You only buy Korean TVs and Phones. Everything else is shit like Daewoo cars. But you better shell out for the LG C4 or G4 because the B series is low end and subject to shitty parts like your fridge. Also don't buy Samsung appliances.

This looks like some kind of corrosion. Is this because lead free solder?

15 years is a solid run for a PCB that had this much moisture content.
Where the fuck do you live, Florida?
That's all moisture oxidation.
Is your fridge in a fucking bathroom, or do you leave windows open or smoke or some shit?
That's high humidity environment damage.

I'm sorry but what the fuck is this shit? Through-hole PCB? Half the components missing and pads burned to shit?
What were you trying to do? Back in high school I was able to solder a switch into my Xbox 360 controller for full semi auto in CoD. In college we were soldering with surface mounts and I never saw even a woman burn a board like that
If you have a project you want to complete get a decent soldering iron with temperature control, I got one for $50 I'm sure they are cheaper now. Decent tips are important too. And practice with scrap electronics, you can buy a lot from harbor freight the solder suckers will come in handy if you make a mistake. But they can't unburn your shit

2011 is the design version. The serial number says 2021.

The "missing" components are probably just for a different model. That's literally SOP.
Burnt pads is probably because it's assembled by a 10 year old with a 500+ unit per day quota using the shittest iron imaginable with tips that should have been replaced a week ago.
>>
>>533367335
This means the LEDs were fine and you just destroyed it when you could have just cleaned it and it would have worked when you put it back together. Do a better inspection next time and then you can just clean it and put it back together
>>
>>533367667
>Burnt pads is probably because it's assembled by a 10 year
The LEDs fell off when I took it out. That dark area was some kind of corrosion.
When I took apart my LG washing machine they potted the entire board in epoxy so you couldn't test or replace anything but for some reason they thought it was a good idea to not do that to a refrigerator that is constantly cold and damp.
>>
>>
>>533367727
nah, the LEDs looked fucked, as if the board got zapped and blew them right off like >>533366065 says. At least I hope so, otherwise this is shit soldering job.
>>
>>533367667
Look at the back of the board, he cooked the pads while pulling stuff to test the LEDs the original joints are fine. He just got the components super hot on the wrong side and pulled them out didn't even try to remove the old solder

The same part is used in a Kenmore. So much for American brands.
>>
>>533366491
You need to add a resistor in series to limit the current I=U/R if R is just the internal resistance of the LED like 10 Ohm the LED will draw 0.3 A of current while max current is like 0.02 A. So that one probably is already burnt out.

If you got the tools (soldering iron and solder wick+flux, it's a super easy fix. A bag of 100 diodes/led/pushbuttons from aliexpress (the same one as above, ithink they are 5mm LEDs + push buttons) would cost you literally 3$ (1$ each). Then you just clean the board with alcohol to get rid of the corrosion and resolder new ones (with attention to the polarity of LEDs). Idk what the forward voltage on those LEDs are, but usually they will be around 2.1-2.3V, so even if they don't match they just will be less bright or slightly brighter.
Could even find some of the parts on amazon or at your local electronics parts shop for slightly more. definitely not 50 or 180$ though.
>>
>>533367871
If OP is careful he can still fix the board the components cost pennies he needs to clean it up. Don't pull components through without removing the old solder it will just flow back and when it cools you can't fit the new component in
>>
>>
>>533368597
Thats not even an LED controller, that's literally just 5 LEDs and 1 push button, the controller is most likely what is on the other end of that connector cable. I hope OP also checked that to make sure it wasn't faulty before destroying the LED panel kek.
>>
>>
>>533368667
>>533368691
Why does a fridge need LEDs and an LED controller? That's the point. Every single point of solder or wire connection in any electrical system is a point-of-failure.
>>
>>533368667
>I hope OP also checked
The evaporator fan doesn't work either but I don't know if the two are related. I'm going to clean off anything that could be shorting out and try and sort out the fan issue before I resort replacing the LEDs

Wait until you see how they control BLDC compressors.
>>
>>533368750
>>533368750
Check the main controller board. If that's fried, you get no LEDs, no compressor, nothing at all. I was actually surprised that board was faulty when you showed it, it's so simple you could build one yourself in 10 minutes. What tools do you have available? You might also want to move to >>>/diy/ohm/ for more help, all the electronics guys are there. I'd stop fucking around with the boards before asking for help though, you most likely rekt that board for no reason.
>>
>>533368750
The evaporator fan on my fridge failed, turns out the shaft had nothing holding it captive and the fan blades literally fell loose. Easy fix but damn something so important just a piece of plastic that slid right off
Got lucky I noticed before my food spoiled

You could literally have a custom PCB designed, manufactured and shipped to you for less than that. That is not cheap.

I think the main board is fine. The compressor and its fan run. I got this fridge for free it was sitting in a storage unit for a few years. The doors were closed so maybe the years of humility took their toll

>>533368800
That's so functionally retarded. This is what we get because we can't just use R22 and a powerhog compressor that lasted forever because it was built like a brick by Germanic peoples to fucking last. Fucking kikes are immune to efficiency. What a wasteful people and their economic system.

I wanted this LG fridge because it only draws around 60 watts when running. I've been testing a lot of free appliances I find recently. This Kenmore freezer ran in someones garage for 30 years but used over 3kw a day to run. That is like $45 a month in California.

Circuits inside of fans. Its circuits all the way down.

>>533369369
>That is like $45 a month in California.
But WHY it it that much? Because the efficiency of the system is being negatively impacted by taxes and laws and other dumb shit. You think people were paying the equivalent of $45/m to run a GE fridge running R12 in the early 60s? Hell no.

Most of my appliances are LG but I didn't buy any of them. I just get them and fix them when the original owner has had enough. Its usually the pumps that go out on the washing machines.
During covid madness I was getting one broken washing machine a week to fix and flip or give away to people that needed one.
