how did we get here? how did it get this bad?
well it absolutely started with social media. social media was the beginning of the end for two main reasons. first, people were never made to compare themselves to so many other people. most of social media content is misleading because it is carefully curated to portray some version of reality that is usually not very accurate. a person's identity has been severed from the person itself and replaced with a convincing, semi-permanent curated portrayal. people spend more time interacting with these portrayals than with the actual people who made them.
the other main issue with social media is that it is a black hole that sucks up time like no other thing has ever done before. gamified endless scrolling has eaten up so many hours that would have otherwise been used for other things, some really good and productive things that will never happen anymore.
then mobile devices made it even worse because they allowed social media access 24/7. and they put cameras in the hands of every person everywhere.
so now people are not just curating their social media presence, they are fundamentally changing their lives to make the curation easier and more convincing. cameras everywhere made it necessary for the curators to never break the act- the show must go on forever. and it has to be really convincing!!
but people have always secretly hated each other to some extent. i don't mean that everyone is a misanthrope, but bullying and other forms of social hierarchy games have existed forever. one could probably argue that bullying is a kind of social behavior that kept the group in check for the most part, even if it gets out of line occasionally. but now that cameras are everywhere, bullying is not so possible anymore because not many people want their curated social identity to be associated with being blatantly mean and brutish for selfish reasons. thus humans had to invent some new form of socially acceptable bullying

that's where politics comes in.
before social media and camera proliferation, political discourse was mostly based around ideas, beliefs, traditions, and the various disagreements present in all of those things. this is no longer the case. now politics is essentially larping as all those things, and underneath the larping layer, there is the new form of bullying. it's largely bulletproof. if you bully your political opponent, your curated social identity is still pure because you are bullying for some perceived noble cause. politics allows society to continue bullying each other, being mean and tribal, and it's always justifiable because of the larping layer above it.
now, most people do not form political opinions based on some set of principles or data or religion or experience. they simply pick some people they want to bully and figure out what would really bother those people, and then they take the viewpoints that would really bother their targets are their own viewpoints. so if someone says i believe X, and someone else wants to bully this person for any reason (jealousy, economic competition, sexual competition, etc.), then the other person will say X is wrong and you are a bad person because you believe X is good. it literally doesn't matter what X is or if it actually is good or not.
so this whole political system has essentially become a mockery of itself, layers upon layers of theater to justify being mean to other people. the truth about anything has been buried so deep at this point, and more people just opt for nihilism, drugs, escapism, debauchery, tacky displays of wealth, instant gratification, and crime. this is what happens when truth is buried and the only way to fix it might be to elevate technology in some way i can't think of now.
