Sometimes when I try to sleep I will have these episodes where I can only get to hypnagogia and dream for a minute or less but nothing after that
These short dreams end with a small jerk accompanied by an increase heartbeat
My heart beats all over the place during these episodes and most of the time my heartbeat is what wakes me up
I'm often anxious when I have these episodes
I suffer from mental illness and am on several meds

What could this be?

if you're on benzodiazepines that would be why. you've likely reached the tolerance point and are no longer benefiting from them.

but obviously, if you want better answers, you should have told us exactly what drugs you're taking in your post. why would you even bother asking this question without including this obviously relevant information?

>benzodiazepines
I'm not on any

Seroquel, Lithium and propranolol

what "mental illness" do you take these for? you might be experiencing dyskinesia from the antipsychotics but i don't think that's it. lithium can have some strange symptoms, and this may be related to that. the propranolol probably has nothing to do with it--all that does is diminish the activity of adrenaline. antipsychotics really destroy your ability to have fun too, but that's unrelated. i have no experience with lithium though. no desire to try it either. i'm not convinced it works well for people outside of very rare circumstances, and like i said, the side-effects are significant.

Try high dose folinic acid, you might be suffering a brain folate deficiency.

Avoid "folic acid" like the plague, it blocks receptors for it. Extended receptor blocking can cause severe but semi-reversible brain damage, it's happening commonly in children now that are being bombarded by the folic acid in all packaged grain products that say 'enriched'. If something says enriched or contains folic acid it is poison.

Could also try some glycine and melatonin.

OCD and schizoaffective

>the side-effects are significant.
I'll talk to my psychiatrist about all this the next time I see him

I'll look into these
Thank you

where did you hear all of this? i've never seen any indication this is a real problem because we'd be seeing widespread spina bifida if people were actually folate deficient on a wide scale.

>OCD and schizoaffective
i have OCD. i take an SSRI for it. sertraline. antipsychotics made me feel far, far worse, and i immediately stopped taking them. did you try an SSRI first? i've also never heard of lithium for OCD or schizoaffective. the mechanism of lithium interrupting cAMP is specifically designed for bipolar disorder and the bipolar cycling process.

the propranolol may help with anxiety if you need it. but the other two are likely making you feel worse and causing strange side-effects. i truly do not understand why you're being prescribed those two drugs if that's your diagnosis.

>did you try an SSRI first?
I tried multiple first

I've been considering getting off of the lithium for a while now

what did you experience from the SSRI that made you want to stop it but still try other things? what do you think you're getting out of the antipsychotic? if you have OCD like me, i can't see how you could feel good at all on an antipsychotic.

and yeah, the lithium just seems completely pointless to me here. it's not even related to your problems. it's supposed to be for biopolar disorder and that's basically it.
