I like what Cody Lundin did, the big fat faggot hippie from Dual Survival, was smart about how he built his house. He basically made a self sustaining green house that's like built into the ground so it maintains temps without having AC. I guess he recycles rain water or ground water or some shit, he has some type of water system.
No clue what the fuck you do for food in Arizona mud house though, other than keep live stock i guess and have a green house. It's all the work of a normal homestead except you have way more access to heat and electricity.
