The main issue is we can't actually go beyond the moon. A Mars trip would take 6-9 months and the planet isn't inhabitable. It is basically pointless to send humans to space except as a means to develop more technology.

China already produces bridges to nowhere, half finished apartment buildings with nobody in them, millions of tons of stainless steel beams just lying around because nobody needs it.
We already have all the resources and nobody needs them for anything.

Looks like The Guardian's writers are competing for who can have the worst take about this.

Tbh I don't think it will matter as NASA's already facing budget cuts thanks to funding being diverted to the war. They'll likely manage to stretch funding and put men on the moon again, but then Trump and co. will axe the moon base plan in favor of whatever war he's brewing by then. Moon base was always an unrealistic dream that was to give all of this a "purpose", but current American politics and world geopolitics do not really care about this when the logistics of its functioning need far more support than the ISS and the ISS itself was a nightmare of international co-operation to pull off.

>he has not been to a fucking desert or at sea
really, some time spent on ships at sea or traveling between desert towns would help these privileged white trash realize that a good chunk of exploratory travel for most of civilization involved exactly this, and that you get past the "deep sadness" and "grief" after your captain/master explorer gets you a serving of liquor.

Counterpoint: Shatner is an obese weak minded faggot who spent half his life larping on tv sets next to people in rubber alien masks. His opinions are shit, shat if you will. The void is not "death", but that's just what he ascribes to it in his feeble mind.

>w-waaaaah the universe isn't filled with already habitable planets
yeah, and it's our duty as a species to change that, what a limpwristed faggot. this false dichotomy between
>we need to protect the earth OR go colonize other worlds
needs to fucking stop, we can do both, as a matter of fact doing the latter will help with the former.
>b-but it's hard and will take a long time!
not an excuse.

if everyone thought like that wed all be stuck wherever humans first evolved. some humans have always wanted to explore and go where no one has gone before.
its important that we get out there now and learn how to survive out there in steps, instead of having to figure everything out at the same time when the sun enters is red giant phase and swallows this planet. I'd rather space living be comfy and have all the kinks works out way before we are forced to live there instead of just visiting.

Also mars has blue sunsets which are kind of neat, the atmospheric dust and whatnot filters to allow more blue light as opposed to the red/orange here on earth.

Because Shatner spent his entire career living in a fake version of space. What is up with this troon fantasy of space being where you can fly to Alpha centauri in 5 minutes and find aliens who could turn your dick inside out for you? Star trek and star wars have both done irreparable damage to the public perception of space.

6-9 months is absolutely doable and we can just send tons of food, water and gear ahead of the people.
>It is basically pointless to send humans to space except as a means to develop more technology.
So it's pointless other than having a point.
>>
>>16957116
Surviving 6-9 months is challenging, but we've already proved it's not impossible.
Landing on Mars is challenging, but we've already proved it's not impossible.
Creating a habitat that can sustain people for months or years is challenging, but we've already prove it's not impossible.
A Mars mission is just the combination of all those things.

British inferior, you AREN'T going into space. Your input was not solicited, is not desired, and will not be considered. The conversation of space exploration is to be had by those nations capable of doing it, and the people that live in them.
