I wonder how Puskas and Cruyff would be ranked if they won a world cup.
It is criminal neither the netherlands nor hungary won a cup considering their contributions to the sport.
If the germans didn't dope up in 1954, that hungary team would've been legendary forever.
If cruyff stayed in 1978 maybe they could've eeked out a win over argentina assuming it wouldn't be rigged.

Cope. Fritz Walter, Helmut Rahn, Toni Turek and Max Morlock mogged the 50% ethnic German Hungarian team - and no one will ever take it away. But surely Germany broke some rules and the Hungarians were clean, because … they just were. FIFA would have immediately banned Germany and taken away the title if there had been anything of value
The truth is that the Hungarians were not good enough when it mattered

United fan here. His placing outside the top ten is right. Think of football as something else for a moment, say movies. If Ronaldo was a film director all his movies would be the same genre. Say slashers. Ronaldo directed 17 slashers in his career. Now compare him as a director to someone who has directed dramas, romance, war, mythology, fantasy, basically someone who can do it all and make bangers every time. Would you really put Ronaldo above him? Its not even a question right? And that is the thing, Ronaldo was excellent at one very specific part of the game. But he was never a playmaker too, or an artist on the pitch who saw a beautiful pass. Ronaldo at his best was a physical monster with a clinical finish, yes he scored a ton of goals but he's not even on the same planet as a Zidane et all.

hating? stfu you german cuck, i am a united fan.
In your own dumb way you made my point. As i explained he's very good at one thing. If you reduce football to that, then yes put him in the top ten. But what then do you do with all the defenders, midfielders, playmakers of the world?
Paul Scholes was a better footballer than Ronaldo. Not even close. Who scored more goals? Ronaldo.
See the list is best footballers not best goal scorers. Now fuck off you reductionist kunt

fifa is corrupt and don't care about rigging as long as they benefit from it
german players were popped up with meth
but that world cup win gave germany confidence and good standing internationally after ww2 so maybe it was alright overall

>>154208887
u silly turkish roach. No one is saying Ronaldo is bad. No one is saying to take away his primary talent. THAT'S THE REASON HE'S ON THE LIST DUMBO. Judging him as an overall footballer, ie has ronaldo ever controlled a game? Nope. Never. He doesn't do that. But he was fantastic at what he did do. He deserves to be on the list but he's correctly not top ten.

Germany's role in football is hard checking the would-be legendary teams.
>this is the best generation in our country's history and we are up to great things, surely one of the all time best international sides
But can they beat Germany?

Being particularly versatile is NOT key to making the top 10. Thats just your opinion, not objevtive facts. For objective facts look at his trophy cabinet. Ronaldo is top 5. This isnt up for debate by anyone other than contrarians like you. Now piss off im not blessing your dumb ass with another (You)

I’m sick of lists of athletes. Goat lists, top tens, analyses, highlight reels, canons, counter-canons, the lot. Pathetic activity. Someone could write out the name of every single sportsman I really love, ranked impeccably, with no omissions and no interpolations, and I’d spit cold venom in their face. I think the only way to enjoy greatness with dignity is to witness organically, intuitively, random, by gut feeling. Not running down a list, but enjoying, following the seams where mastery bleeds into each other.

Honestly, that's one of the only discussions that I can't really pick a side confidently. From one perspective I think R9 was more lethal in a way, in the sense that he needed less touches to punish the defense by himself or by making those sneaky passes that people often forget about, butt, you can counter that by talking about how his era kind of favored 1v1. From another perspective Messi was definitely more versatile and consistent from a team perspective, specially when it came to his playmaking, butt, you can counter that by talking about the teammates, team and the traits of the league he played for.
The reason I personally put R9's peak a little ahead is because I think Messi's peak was enhanced by his team, meanwhile R9's was independent of where he was playing at. I don't want to imply that Messi's peak was *only* due to his team, but I do think it made his stats look much better, it was the perferct storm for that to happen the way it happened.
It's really a toss up desu

I think of his peak as one of the highest, probably the highest after R9 and Messi. But even during it, he did lots of stupid things mid game for le joga bonito meme purposes. And playing badly in selecinha wasn't rare for him either. So to me he is a notch below them just because of that.

Posting some random old players who don't make the list but seem like they would be close
>Gerson
One of the 5 number 10s in the Brazil 1970 team he was the steady central playmaker. He missed the 1962 world cup through injury but played 66 and was one of the best performers at 1970.
He famously did an advert for cigarettes after he retired. In Brazil, Gerson's Law means the propensity to unethically take advantage

>Michael Laudrup
One of the coolest players ever in dribbling and passing. Liverpool tried to sign him from Brondby but instead he went to Juve but had to be loaned out to Lazio because they already had 2 world class foreign players and that was the limit in Serie A.
Instead he excelled at Barca, who themselves signed Romario meaning he got ditched for the foreigner rule and went to Real instead. This meant he won 5 consecutive league titles across both clubs.
Maradona cited him as one of the greatest ever. He played across 16 seasons for Denmark but skipped Euro 92 because he didn't like the coach and didn't want to cancel his holiday.

One of the best DMs ever before it was really a popular position but he was very good on the ball too. Won 3 European Cup/Champions Leagues and a Euros. He kind of gets placed as the third of the 3 dutchmen in the great Milan side and even finished 3rd in the balon d'or rankings to van Basten and Gullit 2 years running.
After he left Milan he went back to Ajax and beat Milan in the CL final.

>Teofilo Cubillas
Peru's greatest ever player when they had a few players worth watching desu. He scored 5 in the 1970 world cup and another 5 in 1978. After 1970 Pele said that Cubillas was his successor. He is still Peru's 3rd highest scorer despite being an attacking midfielder.
Randomly he signed for Porto because they paid him more than Eusebio was getting at Benfica. Not really near the top 50 I wouldn't say but his highlight reel makes him look a shoe in.

If you talk about Rivaldo(a real nigga in both 98 and 02) then you have to take a closer look at ronaldonho and his NT failures, that causes a psychological problem with his fans childhood memories, so you just can't do it. Similar to the eto'o messi situation or di maria messi.

If you had a single clue, you'd know Germany's manager Sepp Herberger decided to throw that match to gather information. He speculated on meeting Hungary again in the final and trusted Germany would easily advance from the groups anyway (opponents were Turkey and South Korea after all). Germany played a different system and fielded various reserve players (Kwiatkowski, Bauer, Mebus, Herrmann, Pfaff)
It's also not exactly a secret that Germany had a bit of a tech advantage in the final since it was rainy and Germany had superior boots made by Dassler. Also, Fritz Walter required colder temperatures to play at his best ever since contracting Malaria in WW2
If Germany played that group stage match clean, then the 14 days between then and the final didn't matter either. Nobody can effectively roid this quickly
