I hate painting so much. It's so boooooring. Everything up until painting is so fun. Assembling, kitbashing, sculpting, printing, recasting, converting etc. But painting is so boring I can't power through it

I hate doing basecoats so I find shortcuts. Find a method that works for you. The trick is to find a way to get a quality you think looks good enough but takes little time to achieve. Your scheme and faction do matter in this though. Marines are a pain in the ass to paint by brush but with an airbrush or rattle cans doing 80% of the job they become a breeze. Doing the same to GSC or IG with so many different textures and materials is a death sentece. Washes and inks are your best friend there.

One thing I've realised is how kind of "flat" the industry is. In that like, you go to a few of the right events in Nottingham and next thing you have 3 mutual friends with Jervis Johnson. I know they're just people and not rockstars but still.

Every change so far seems like an improvement over 10th. The problem is that 10th as a base is shit, so many changes that are needed are impossible to make without invalidating existing books. It does give me hope that the new designers understand where the problems are and next edition they can do a full reset and make a system closer to old 40k or the current 30k rules. I really, really hope they copy at least the statlines, morale and weapon rules.

Ideally I'd go back to 3rd/4th edition but that's even more unlikely to happen. I have some issues with HH3 but it's overall a way better modernization of the 40k ruleset than anything since 8th has been. And I really fucking like the new morale system. I also like the new 30k FOC.

We're talking about writing rules for a game. There aren't that many writers, like 3 or 4 and the lead writer is absolutely in power of the general design principles of the ruleset, which is the thing 10th does the worst. Like, we have his fucking quotes from WarCom articles straight up lying.

I'm surprised 40K managed to make a believable setting where women want to have a lot of babies in a way that doesn't get in the way of their education, careers or lives, to the point where a dystopic fluoride anaphalactic needs to be pumped into the water supply on every world
When you look at something like Helldivers 2, their failure to manage this makes the scale of death in the setting impossible, especially when combined with the conception consent forms, what were they thinking?

I play HH3.0
initially I hated it when they were doing the previews, I thought they were making it too similar to 40k and needlessly complicated in areas (e.g challenges and FOC)
the leaks reinforced this, the rules are complete word salad and hyper specific so they cannot be misinterpreted, written as if the fans are your typical 40k players
however, actually PLAYING it, it's a ton of fun and easily one of the best feeling editions for any game they've ever done
vehicles are much better, dreadnoughts got nerfed, the challenge minigame is really fun when you understand it, tactical status effects add another layer onto the game (e.g you can use them to stop your opponent scoring), adding in weapon initative modifiers allows greater granularity between melee weapons with pros and cons
and the word salad rules have a little sentence in bold before the rule, to tell you the INTENTION of what it's supposed to do
obviously it still has flaws, making units 40k-lite by removing weapon and wargear options not in the kit and removing units from the book for no reason (granted these are 90% a marine problem) is shitty
HH3.0 with better rulebook formatting would be perfect for 40k, the 10th ed rules just don't work

Have any of you ever cheated in a game?
I don't mean mistakenly/deliberately ignore or make up a rule or datasheet, but much smaller things such as 'nudging' a model. I confess there was one time where my model was just outside the objective circle and while I was doing a deepstrike with a different unit on the objective, I 'accidently' pushed the lone model a hairs breadth onto the circle. with my deepstriking unit.
Got walloped in that match anyway, to be fair.

anon, governments placing restrictions on childbirth is a sign they’re horrifically overpopulated, not underpopulated. the separate crises from the bugs, cyborgs, and squids are relatively recent, so if they’re didn’t come and start killing their “useless eaters”, they’d begin culling their population.

>their education, careers or lives
What education and career? The average lifestyle for an imperium citizen is the same of a victorian era factory worker. You do have enough free time to meet someone and rise children and enough "money" to get some basic stuff but you'll be doing the exact same work in poor conditions for your entire life. People throw memes around of workers doing 20 hour shifts and eating corpse starch but reality is that, by design, the average conditions of 40k workers need to be bad enough that the option of revolting is enticing enough that it happens all the fucking time in some place or another, but not bad enough that your entire population keels over in a couple of weeks.

Those are pretty much my opinions too. I'll add that while the datasheet format in 3.0 is way better than 10th's AoS style format, I don't get why they moved the unit composition section around. Makes everything less legible than the 2.0 datasheets which were perfect IMO. In truth, the 2.0 format is the exact same 40k had had since 5th edition, a testament of how good it was.

>nosering
There's something to be said about modern fantasy character design where the entire western world, all at once, decided it was in vogue to create an ugliness that didn't reflect society nor even the artists themselves. And any attempt at criticism is met with "It's supposed to look bad".

Why serving the Imperium as officers, generals, commissars, rogue traders and custodes of course!
Women and their strength have always been crucial to the setting since rogue trader blister packs
How you could have an exorbitant amount of babies without all women pitching in, consensually, would be ridiculous
>>
>>97897823
Imperial citizens have very limited vertical movement. If you're the child of a manufactory worker, you'll be a manufactory worker or equivalent. The very small elite population that makes up those privileged positions have enough resources to have children and rise them without it impacting their careers. You see the same shit today. Poor as fuck people pump out children because it's free labour. Rich fucks pump out children because they can afford it. It's middle class retards like us that having a child has a significant impact on our personal economy.

You chose a good looking piece of art without noserings.
In fact you went back in time to when Warhammer liked the punk aesthetic and paid good artists.
I don't see what punk, or bikers, has to do with Votann as they are not Squats but thank you for trying to believe they look good.
>>
>>97897844
I just don't get why you associate noserings to uglyness? And I chose that art because the dude has two ring piercings per nipple.
>I don't see what punk, or bikers, has to do with Votann as they are not Squats
Because they still have a very cyberpunk component of personal modification and shit like noserings or piercings are extremely common in those themes.

They're waaaaaay closer to starcraft marines than to a cyberpunk faction.

>I just don't get why you associate noserings to uglyness?
Just tell me you find them hot and we'll move on. I assume you're not very old because you should have noticed a fair few fictional characters with them in the past 10 years and they emulate roughly 10% of the problems of the women who wear them in real life, which is 10% too much.
>cyberpunk is body mods
Do you want to argue about how, whenever you see someone with a glass eye, you shout "THAT'S SOOO CYBERPUNK!"
Or do you want to argue that an urban corporate computerised dystopic amoral transhuman and post-human setting, being called prefix-punk means it's related to the English punk music and fashion movement of the '70s (a derivative of glam rock), and therefore a a fictional faction that uses an element of cyberpunk (e.g. computers), is therefore punk and therefore is excused to use a punk aesthetic (piercings) even when piercings were extremely uncommon and I've never seen a nosering on actual punk fans other than modern scene posers.
It's actually kind of funny how photographs of punk concerts results in the most normal looking white young adults possible who could fix their hair and go to work in a bank the very next day.

NTA, but those aren't bikers, they're Einhyr Hearthguard and odds are that they wouldn't do nose rings. Tattoos? Sure, under their armor or something like that maybe, but military units tend to enforce some kind personal standard for appearance, and something really visibly obvious like a nose ring would likely violate that rule. I honestly cannot see that not being the case for the Kyn.
>>
>>97897832
>Poor as fuck people pump out children because it's free labour.

in Ingerlund they don't have children for work, that's illegal, they have them for benefits, child cap's gone now
middle classers don't have them because they don't get bennies
richies don't have them because they can afford it, it's only ever when the man is richer does the wife agree to having lotsa kids
I don't know what you mean by limited movement, officers get promoted all the time in the novels and their backstory is always being an urchin on the streets, just read the fall of cadia, there's a female officer who goes from zero to hero and they used her to inspire the entire planet to fight better
>>
>>97897936
I feel like I shouldn't need to explain how 99.999% of high ranking officers come from a military academy and thus from a wealthy family and not from an infantry squad grunt that enlisted so they wouldn't have to work in the salt mines like the past 40 generations of their family.

oh and there was also creed, I assume he's a noble or something, he kinda sucked and needed everyone else to tell him what to do and that he was a major fuckup, I'm not surprised they wrote him out of the setting, kinda a big fat lame-o, probably white too

First Space Wolves unit done, just some intercessors. Going grimy and grimdark and lots of wear and tear, since my last army was clean and bright colored. I thought it would be funny to have Space Wolves from different companies having the shittiest time of their lives on a dingy Space Hulk filled with horrors, Dead Space/Resident Evil vibes. Garbage and blood all over the place.
I understand the pauldron colors are incorrect, but, uh, I don't give a shit. These guys are "set" in the future where the Imperium has lost and they're the stragglers who have banded together. They're repurposing old pauldrons they've found since they can't fix their equipment properly.

How do you feel about the current commissar model?

The assembly is totally fine, and the kneepads are totally irrelevant to me. The proportions, poses and weapon variety is way better than the old ones, thats a huge plus.
I dislike the shape of their helmets, but thats a minor thing that doesn't somehow make the old ones better. They suck. They always sucked. Their only saving grace was the fact that the other plastic guardsmen GW did were even worse.
>commisar

That sentinel however, thats a huge minus. Easily the worst model of the guard range, especially when its next to the old one.

Honestly, i do not care if GW names the box "Cadian Shocktroops", because they are just generic Guardsmen. They are supposed to be /Your/ regiment.
But even if you want them to be pure Cadians, you can justify a variety of lasgun marks in the set.

You can justify anything you want, it still shit to force everyone who doesn't want old Catachans or Kriegers to use a mix of different lasgun patterns in squads. If you want to go mixing, source some 3rd party or other regiment lasguns for your dudes.

>As the heavier of the Mon'keigh pushes the other down, a few quick snips are all it takes to turn the lower one's forearms into smaller forelegs, and the top's into weapons of war. The two sets of ribs make for a powerful set of teeth, with each 'embrace' of the pair chomping through limbs.

In a way it's refreshingly boring. Just the Imp Guard version of a Rhino or a Trukk rather than the modern GW method of "stick as many guns on the thing as possible."
It's a bare minimum transport designed to move infantry up the midfield as quickly as possible, and doesn't need guns since it's Firing Deck 12.
I honestly wish more armies had something like this.

Uniornically get better at it and change your mindset.
If you're stuck in baby mode going "I paint blue by applying a base coat of Golemite Blue, wash with Dark Shade, and then apply a highlight of golemite blue mixed with voidstar blue, then finally apply an extreme highlight of pure voidstar blue" you will be bored once you're past the basic skill level where you've got the basics of brush control down, because you're reducing an art form to a mere rote activity only pleasent in a mindless zen way with an audio book.
Glazes, weathering, undertones, freehand, volumetric lighting, texturing, and most improtantly not working to some strict recipe is how you make painting fun. You shouldn't think of a model as coloring book page, you should think of it as a sketch on a canvas.

Sisters are neat because they're one of the only factions I can think of that went through formal education. I wonder what the rough literacy rate in the Imperium is? Like, on ag worlds, feudal worlds, and primitive worlds, it's obviously low. But hive worlds are just slums; many countries have both slums and widely literate populations (eg Mexico and Brazil) and civ worlds almost certainly have some educational standards.

So my understanding is these new guard APCs and AFVs come in squads, are they 1 per box? And do they come with enough models to put these crew models in the back of every one? I really like models that are posed with that "hand gripping the vehicle for stability" pose, like on the eldar jet bikes. It would be cool if you could model infantry shooting over the side, taking cover, holding on and stuff but idk how many crew are actually coming in the box.

There is no alternative to this thread. Reddit is fucking gay and the discord the goblina lesbian made does indeed post models, but you have to wade through inane foid chatter to find them. Best to accept that decalmutant is an unsightly barnacle we aren’t likely to scrape off for a while.

Ignoring lolcows has literally never once worked in the history of this website, they're so starved for attention they'll eventually start samefagging their posts until someone else joins in anyway. Banning is the only way but with mobile internet and multiple devices it's pretty much impossible to reliably ban someone here and we're stuck with this. So again, might as well have some fun with it.

nah, most lolcows are absolute psychopaths who will fuck others over, manipulate them, and even commit sexual assault if given the opportunity attention from trolls or no attention from trolls. far worse crimes than any lolcow milker could ever commit (assuming they aren’t lolcows themselves)

No that's dumb as fuck, every single time they release a "new and improved" marine kit all the marinefags I know instantly buy multiple boxes of them. I have multiple people in my hobby group that had multiple land speeder, bought multiple Storm Speeders and are now looking at the previews drooling at the mouth for the new Land Speeder. Every time GW renakes the Marines a shitload of Marinefags that otherwise wouldn't be interested in other armies instantly rebuy their army. That's a level of sales they can't get from just newfags. And that's the reason they are remaking Marines a third time in ten years.

I admire this level of innocence but that's straight up false. We have known for decades from interviews and similar that each time GW redoes an old kits the sales are a lot lower than that of new kits. A thing that has been solved by making the updated kit different enough to pretend it's totally a new unit guys, so they can squat the old kit, force people to rebuy everything, and then redo the same thing a few years later.

From people that actually owned them before the new kit came out? A bunch. You don't see them much in absolute terms because the amount of people that started Necrons in Indomitus is a lot higher than the amount of old players, and even old players got a lot of the new warriors while buying Indomitus for other units. And they still gave the new Warriors a completely new weapon 90% of the time better than the old one. But for example 90% of the Necron player I know that had the old Monolith didn't bother with the new one.

Those are stupid questions because both got an update at most 5 years ago. Devastators, which is what was the original topic, are 13 years old already. That kit was pretty much identical to the previous one, from 4th edition (so around 9 years old by the time it was updated) and was only 3 years old when primaris came out and GW basically killed all firstborn kits to irrelevance by hiding them from promotional material and with shit rules. What part of this makes it a necessity to squat devastators and replace them with erradicators?
>>
>>97899902
It may sound ridiculous nowadays but back in the days Marine players were a lot more selective and were used to just buy a bunch of extremely cheap tacticals on eBay to kitbash in their units of choice instead of just consuming. Which is another reason Primaris were created.

The part where almost nobody who already had the 4th edition Devastator kit bought the 6th edition one, while most people who had a Devastator kit still bought Eradicators.
And this despite the fact that the 6th edition devastator kit was the only source of the extremely pushed at the time Grav Cannons.
>>97899960
Tacticals were a dime a dozen because every marine box had shitload of them, and every person who started marines only to paint a model and drop the hobby sold them for pennies.
>the weapons had to come from somewhere
Yeah, and that wasn't most of the times new kit. Even before 3d printing people found ways that weren't paying GW for an overpriced finecast resin kit with bended lightning claws (pic related). Have you idea of the sheer amount of guides on the internet that taught you how to convert a weapon into another?

I don't have a conspiracy theory. I know it's because there is a mandated ESG corporate push to " diversify " products. The companies that invest into GW have mandates that they push onto GW and other corporations they invest into that force them to make a certain number of non white and non male characters/representatives.
It's not a theory, it's written into their mandates in plain English. It's 100% a top down forced diversity by extremely wealthy people to try and force perspective changes upon the middle and lower classes. As they explicitly say it is.

distract from class warfare. enshittify products under on the surface good reasoning like anti-racism and feminism which causes conservative people to shit on corporations which results in progressive people to implicitly defend those corporations. diversity being so front and center in everything also causes progressives internally to begin infighting, and distracting themselves from their greater goals.

>nooo you have to run space marines only for it to be a real army!
Bitch, space marines shouldn’t even be a sole army to begin with. In an ideal world you would be forced to take either scouts or cadians in your army to take up a single basic bitch tactical. That’s me being lenient on them because they’re loyalists, chaos should rely on chaff more. Have it as its bedrock even.

True, Tau drone zergrush was 100% valid. And when Ultramarines get Militia/serf support units and somehow GW unbalances the game, clearly it will be valid to run a horde of them too. I also definitely want a bunch of chaff shit that sucks in a big discord box, especialyl when it's already cheap outside of the box, instead of something good. Thank you for informing me that running horde lists of garbage is based and valid.

Glad to see you understand little Mr waac fag. Now never talk about what a proper army should look like before gw introduces something like old ones which runs less models than what custodes or knights or even a ctan spam list has.

Move shoot move means it's always obscured unless the opponent comes to it.

Actual list building rules, and for armies to actually look like armies instead of complete jokes. Seeing nothing but marines on a table is disguting, something needs to break up how artificial an all marine army looks and needs something else to highlight how “heroic” marines are.
