I want to write up some fluff for my first 6E warband to get some idea on what to print, how does this sound:
>a minor noble that's on his way to reinforce his elector count for an upcoming battle, will get ambushed
>the noble: a captain either on foot or on a horse
>the other hero: either a lvl1 wizard that was on his way to the battle too and stopped by the noble's castle/fort/village/whatever to meet up with him, or a priest with a similar backstory
>men at arms: two melee core units, probably halberds with a detachment of crossbowmen to represent the noble taking some of his standing soldiers with him while leaving the rest to defend his holdings
>little greta: the noble's prized possession that he named after his daughter, a warmachine that's either a cannon or mortar, that he nearly put himself into debt to buy (he's not really rich for a noble) and now wants to test out in a battle
>x factor: maybe some free company soldiers to represent some people the priest gathered along the way, or like 5 greatswords escorting the mage (doesn't feel right without a count present fluff-wise, but a small number sounds more believable), or some archers to represent some additional men the noble pulled from among his subjects
How would that fluff sound? Anybody here that played Warband in the past?

Anyway I wouldn't mind having snakemen if a) they had some good armour themeing, b) they had proper lore written for them and c) they get good designs.
Current issue I have with a lot of nu-GW stuff is that they're really not treating the setting as a cohesive whole.
So you get suddenly black reiklanders instead of creating an actual ethnic group from araby/ind/wherever and then giving an excuse to recruit from them despite imperial xenophobia (although in fairness this is rather having their cake and eating it too since you can just never paint them that way and an aesthetic they can drop in a second if they feel like it since they never actually wrote it down) or the sort of disney-ish adjacent takes they currently have on Cathay despite asshole chinese cultivators sects and historical fanfiction being an awesome, awesome ground for the sort of mix of actual good guys meets a rough world or grimdark dog-eat-dog WFRP material. I took one look at those and thought it was like kicking in an open door and they instead decided to start mining at a wall right next to it.
Also a bit worried about the design part, i've seen more than one uninspired WoW-like piece recently coming out of the AoS stuff even ignoring other issues.

Turns out you can actually resin 3D print those stamping plates people have been touting over waterslide decals for a few cents and it's supposedly pretty easy to make them (just a 2D design you turn SVG and cut out off a 3D block for 0.05-0.1mm), a UV light, stamping gel polishes and some generic nail polish tooling. Like $10-$20.
That's going to make heraldric painting a whole lot less painful (i'm not a freehand kind of guy), no need to deal with microset bs and it looks to set nicer going by videos i've seen.
>>
>>97900188
I'd be interested in making a new tomb king subfaction based around the stalkers. Make them an offshoot based in Ind and throw in a big undead/construct elephant, and a new kind of ushabti with multiple arms or such.

Basically some youtuber types decided to start selling metal plates that you fill with ink, scrape and move with silicon pads to stamp onto your mini and it sets like regular paint.
Except they were charging pretty hefty amounts for it and couldn't use copyrighted designs. (though you can pay the chinese like $25 a plate to get your own designs)
But then some people thought just figured "well it's just nail painting stuff" and went out shopping on amazon. Some technicalities aside (like you want one of two kinds of nail paints either uv gel stamps or ones that are a bit more translucent iirc) turns out you can just buy all the stuff they're overcharging for on the cheap and you can also 3D print your own plates to get exact GW designs for much cheaper than buying metal ones.
Here's a guy who did both (and compared them to the pricy ones): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1zkNv-lxsU

If I were to bet I would suspect the wizard, fimir and troll might be in that range.
Either check up old citadel ranges or if you're feeling lazy then ask an AI which old metal model it is then do an advanced search on ebay checking sold objects to see the actual prices people get for them.

i'm not familiar with nail art at all
how does this technology work? it looks like it's transferring an image (in wet paint/gel/ink) to a rounded glass surface, which then transfers it to the mini?
how does the metal plate work, exactly?
i already own a 3D printer so if i can print my own designs in resign and use them with a $5 nail stamper from walgreen's this would be amazing
also curious if the nail art resin is as toxic as 3D printer resin
>>
>>97899169
New Foot Knights that also double as Questing Knights on Foot.
>>
>>97900562
It's pretty much just a mold for the stamp paint that dries quick.
The video goes over both kinds of paint and you move it over on the figure before it's dried completely (or in the case of the gel cure it on there with UV light).
The rounded glass surface is actually silicone that bends along the model. (and you can get it in just square shape instead of with the handle)
Metal plate is just what they sell them on because you clean off the remnant paint with acetone and metal won't be damaged by that which cured resin might eventually be (probably softens it like IPA over enough time) but if you're 3d printing you don't care because it's literally a box you can print in minutes so even if it should stop working just make a new one.
There's some caveats like you have to use the right nail paints, have to have 100% acetone to clean it up not regular nail polish remover, have a silicon pad thing they use etc but it's all relatively cheap stuff you can pick up for like $20. The non-gel paints are the priciest bit if you want to use those.
There's also other videos on the tech because the influencer kit thing sent out a lot of them for free to other youtubers where they go over techniques, what works, what doesn't etc.
For instance there seems to be some technique in getting it to print exactly (like actually putting no pressure to get the stamp on instead a light roll) and one I saw mentioned that if you use white color you can actually paint it with regular transparent acrylic paints after it's dried.
I'm going to pick up some on the cheap and try it eventually for myself, but one thing most seem to agree on is that it's better than dealing with decals.
>>
>>97900423
The snakeman is pretty rare, some 12 quid at non-scalper prices.
You've also got a limited edition wizard (the one with the wings and crazy hair) and an unreleased dwarf wizard which can always fetch a decent price.
I'd keep mad paint them, as they're a little treasure, but if you want to sell them, you could get a good hundred from the right buyer.
There's a chance they're recasts, in which case the price could drop just a bit, even then, people will still want them.

Lads, are gyrocopters just really fkin good? Especially at 500 points?

I'm making two 500pt lists to play some comfy solo games to learn the rules before venturing to games clubs (at which point I'll have two painted 500pt armies to take to said clubs). I decided to do a mini-campaign loosely themed around skull pass. Trouble is, I've given the dwarfs a gyrocopter for something a little different, yet the more I look at its rules the more I think it's going to dominate the table (which is the 44"x30" size from the 500pt format rules, fwiw).

Would appreciate second opinions. Lists as follows, I've just included stuff I'd find fun to play with and learn a variety of rules, so I'm aware they're not optimised:

Night gobbos
------------------
- Warboss, on foot, wollopa's one hit wunda, paymaster's coin, enchanted shield
- Oddgit, level 1, earthing rod
- 19 spears with netters & full command (warboss' unit)
- 13 shortbows, no command (shaman's unit)
- 5 squig hoppers with spears and light armor
- 2 stone trolls with additional HWs

Dwarfs
----------
- Thane, on foot, full plate, rune of shielding
- 14 warriors, shields, full command (thane's unit)
- 8 quarrellers, no command
- 10 longbeards, shields, full command
- 1 gyrocopter with steam gun

The gyro has Fly(9), dive bomb, T5, W3, fire & flee, MR(-1), swiftstride & S4 impact hits, vanguard, and a gun perfect for killing goblins, all for 60 points...
My other option for that 60 points was 5 miners, which feels like more of a fair fight for the goblins, but then the dwarf list would be 100% infantry, which doesn't seem as interesting for me to paint, or fun & educational to play.

Anyone want to weigh in? Is that gyrocopter going to rule the table? What do the goblins from the above list have that could answer it? (Yeah the trolls may have the strength and attacks to bring it down, but not the movement, and probably not the IQ either lol.)

Pic related, the test gobbo. Cheers!
>>
>>97900267
They still sell gnoblar fighters for AoS, but trappers are OoP. You can also get a bunch from the Blood Bowl team, and they don't look too football-y because they're just wearing rags.
>>
>>97900222
gyrocopter-doubter from above here. I've looked into printing your own stamp plates a bit too. I've seen a few different test plates from people online. Apparently the more brittle high-detail resins work best because they give sharper detail than the more flexible resins we typically find best for printing minis. I'm going to give it a try too at some point, I did consider those goblin hobbies stamping plates but the lack of 'proper' iconography and the fact you can't resize the icons like you can with your own printed version put me off.

I've done quite a lot of 3d modelling work too. There are a couple guides online for how to turn your SVGs into a stamping plate, but if it's new to you and I can help at all with the process just ask away.
>>
Do any of your games ever play like old White Dwarf battle reports? If not, you are playing the game wrong
>>
>>97900890
Tbh I think i'll manage on the 3D and printing side.
The biggest issue will be turning the old classic heraldry of WFHB into SVG files.
If you know a good way to do that i'm all ears.

Kino every time.
>>
>>97900891
No, I play each game with matching point costs, symmetrical terrain, and use arbitrary victory points to determine who wins. What most people call "sovl" is actually what's holding back Warhammer Fantasy from being the competitive wargame it was always meant to be.
>>
>>97900957
>turning the old classic heraldry of WFHB into SVG files
Lol, I just tried to get AI to do it with a PNG of an orc face logo, and what I got instead was an SVG of the orc's retarded brother.

Apparently some people have had success with 'trace bitmap' in a program called Inkscape. It can do it automatically in some scenarios, evidently. I've just watched a video of someone use it and it handled a black and white image pretty perfectly.
>>
>>97900850
my issue is less with the gryocopter (i think the gyro and opposing wizard kind of balance each other out in terms of shenanigans), but the fact that that goblin warboss is going to absolutely SMOKE that thane in a duel.

wollapas one hit wunda+paymasters coin=dead thane with no counterplay. 4 attacks at strength 10 ap-3 rerolling hit rolls strikes first.

thats a little beardy for an intro game, and the thanes got basically nothing to defend against it. there's also like a 40pt disparity between the warboss and the thane from what i can tell.
>>
>>97901126
Yeah, I had some attempts with inkscape way back that didn't go that well.
I think i'll clean-up the images (possibly with AI, possibly manually) and try to use Adobe Illustrator's Image Trace.
But i'll leave that for later.
>>
Would a necroarch work with tzeentch sorcerers
>>
>>97901214
It would be a race to see who could fuck the other over first.
>>
>>97900891
I see maps like this and I can't help but start imagine cool and dynamic scenarios. Imagine the evil players knows that some enemy reinforcements will be coming across that bridge at some point but he doesn't know which turn. How would that affect his strategy? Imagine that little village has some rules where your skirmishers can hold it down and the enemy has to assault into it to post them, with some homebrew rules to accomplish this? So many possibilities when wargaming, but people unironically only want to play like this bait post >>97901045
>>
>>97901175
yeah fair comment haha, when I was typing out the lists I was surprised that I hadn't beefed the thane up a bit more. I just thought the one hit wunda sounded hilarious, and the paymaster's coin made a sneaky combo, I didn't even think about who or what the combo would likely be used against. And I definitely didn't think about a showdown between the warboss and thane! Sounds like an epic moment waiting to happen, but slightly terrifying if you're the thane right now, I agree.

Points-wise the thane is 33 less, you're right. I think I'll buff him up with more ward save runes (shielding & warding), and fluff it that he's heard rumors of a goblin with a really powerful stick that flattens anything it whacks, so he's had his best runesmiths working overtime on his favourite suit of armor in readiness to meet the goblin at skull pass. Goblin with a big 'urty weapon vs stout dwarf loaded up on defensive runes.

Thanks for the spot anon, appreciated!

>>
>>97901288
>right but were talking about....
Characters, and you complained that one was slightly more kitted out than the other or whatever. Because you are stupid.

Any tiny change or commitment ammounts to a lot at 500pts because 500pts is a small game. A magic banner is a significant commitment at 500pts, that does not make a magic banner excessive.

Are those bendable orcs?
>>
>>97901300
>Any tiny change or commitment ammounts to a lot at 500pts because 500pts is a small game

right, so you agree with me that one character having 40pts more wargear than the other at that small of a points level is a big imbalance, especially when the wargear in question is specifically made for winning duels against an opposing army that has only a single character?

you're like, proving my point and agreeing with me but you're angry about it and calling names. i dont get it.
>>
>>97901323
>right, so you agree with me that one character having 40pts more wargear than the other at that small of a points level is a big imbalance
No. Which you would know if you read what I wrote. It is a significant commitment of points relative to the pts level because you have no points to play with, it remains the same imbalance it is in any proper game (a small one, 40pts is basically "evenly matched").

The dwarf might have built his list poorly, but that has nothing to do with the pts difference
>>
>>97901339
a 40pt differnce at 500pts is a completely different proportion to a 40pt difference at 2000pts

you are cooked in the noodle
>>
>>97901372
A 40pts difference is a 40pts difference.

It is a more significant commitment of resources from a list building perspective, it does not make a fight any more unbalanced than it would in a proper size game.

New dwarf list as thanks for your input:

- Thane: on foot, 3x rune of shielding, 1x rune of warding
- 13 warriors, shield, champ, banner
- 8 quarrellers
- 8 longbeards, shield, champ, banner
- gyrocopter, steam cannon

I dropped the musicians from the warriors and longbeards, and dropped 1 warrior and 2 longbeards. I wanted to keep the quarrellers as I think they'll need to try and soften up the squig hoppers and trolls early on. Would have preferred nice round numbers for the units but oh well, they can go in ranks of 4, and it's fewer models to paint.

Thane now has a 4+ ward save and a single-use 2+ ward save. Should make the showdown with the warboss much closer. I ran some numbers and it could swing either way depending on who rolls better, which is fun. My crude statistics say the thane has just over a 60% chance of surviving the initial walloping... but if he does, the warboss is in trouble!

Question about Ogres, is the current Spearhead worth it as an army starter (from scratch)? Gnoblars seem like one of those units you shouldn’t pay full price for, though I imagine it’s not great for repeat buys like the old one.

It was clearly the dark elves' fault.
Dark elves are elves.
They stay in the book.

Looking for ideas on customising my giant to better fit a dogs of war style army

Usually just pimp him out. Add onto him chests and other stolen loot, maybe even an Empire hat up the the top. Something that makes him a lot more civil. If you’re handy with greenstuff, you could add a waving contract parcent in the wind, nailed and dangling from his club.

Update 3 in the neverending saga of "anon agonises over 40 points worth of magic items"

I didn't like the changes to the dwarf list: the duel between the warboss with one hit wunda vs thane tooled up with shielding runes sounded fun, but taking dwarf models out of an already small force and leaving them with incomplete ranks and no musicians made it feel less like the starter-set type army I intended it to be.

So I had a word with the warboss and told him to leave his big stick at home for the first battle. He can bring it for a bonus game afterwards. I've made a couple changes that I'm happier with, as follows for anyone interested:

Night gobbos
------------------
- Warboss, on foot, enchanted shield, *eadbuttin 'at*
- Oddgit, level 1, *tome of spellcraft*
- 19 spears, nets, full command
- 13 shortbows
- 5 squig hoppers, light armour, spears
- 2 stone trolls, additional HWs

Dwarfs
----------
- Thane, on foot, *shield*, rune of shielding
- 14 warriors, shields, full command
- 8 quarrellers
- 10 longbeards, shields, full command
- 1 gyrocopter, steam cannon

Changes:
- Warboss loses one hit wunda and paymaster's coin, gains eadbuttin 'at. I'm using the skull pass model with the little squig so I thought impact hits (1) was appropriate. Tones down the killyness, it's still fun, and impact hits is a new rule for me to practice with.
- Oddgit loses earthing rod, gains tome of spellcraft. I think the shaman is one of the gobbos' main threats, but he's a level 1, so if he fails a couple casting rolls that could mean he does nothing all game. Rerolling them should help, plus it increases the chance of turning a failed cast into a miscast, which is just as fun.
- Thane gains a shield (ooh). The warboss is much less killy now, so a thane with 3+/6++ and gromril armour should stand a much better chance. I wanted to give him an extra wound but that would require gutting the regiments again, so that's off the table.

Enjoy your weekends anons, cheers!

Is he a reverse Don Quijote who take great joy in squashing knights? Then have him swing a grindstone tied to the beam of a windmill as a huge flail, while he's decked out in the dented remains of knightly panoplies as a crude tied together improvised armour.

Was he lured into the life of a sellsword by the promise of wast quantities of alcohol? Then pose him all stumbling-like and have him wield a bathtub turned ale mug as a weapon, with a big satchel of wine barrels slung across his shoulder.

Maybe he was a holy guardian of a temple that he failed to protect for which he now uses the mercenary life as an opportunity to find the raiders who desecrated it? Have him covered in the more or less whole relics that was left behind, while he uses the broken gate as a shield and a statue as a hammer. He might even be carrying some kind of great tapestry as a back banner.

>>97900891
Warmachines on hills, the horror!
>>
>>97902845
Is he a liberated slave-giant, freed from the clutches of a mighty Chaos Dwarfs raiding party or a wandering Ogre tribe? Have his hands replaced with crude blades and bits of metal hammered and/or poured when in a liquid state directly on his flesh in lieu of proper armour. As a result of his former bondage he's grown hugely hateful against whatever his species his former masters were which is represented by the copious skulls hanging off his belt and/or being braided into his hair and/or beard.

Is he a dwarf-friend? Have him dressed like a dwarf with a lovely beard of his own. and with one or more dwarfs on his base and/or carried by him. If his buddies are engineers have him wielding a piece of artillery as an improvised gun (and club!) with maybe a platform on his back that allows his friends to shoot (and/or help him reload) from an elevated level. If his buddies are Slayers then give him a mohawk and a weapon such as the dragon-skull club that comes with the kit. Bonus points if you add some nasty scars to the giant as a result of all the nasty scraps his friends get him into. Maybe he's a good enough chum to have tied one of his now legless slayer friend to his own leg so as to allow him to keep fighting?

All in on "no"
>>
>>97903232
I don't think they've ever done all factions between editions unless you count 1st where the only factions that existed were all of the factions
>>
>>97903129
if the frontage is too small then the unit stops looking like a unit because way too much of its frontal rank is occupied by command models without weapons in hand
without a command group even a 3x2 unit can look like a unit, but with a command group a frontal rank shouldn't have fewer armed models than unarmed models
if you want a 3x2 unit with full command group look like a combat unit, then the banner and musician must be in the back

Those marines barely look any different from the previous ones.
You can't be genuinely basedfacing as a helmet swap.

>>97899151
Can you strip finecast resin with IPA? Or does that ruin models?
>>
>>97900423
Just clocked the Limited Edition Fimir, he's closer in size to the Heroquest ones than the 40mm base ones they then made.
>>
>>97903129
Anything uneven so you can have the bannerman in the middle.

Also, awooooo.
>>
>>97903415
It works on regular 3d printed resin but I think finecast might be more sensitive?
If you soak them too long they get soft/melty.
>>
>>97903398
>SPACE MARINES DON'T HAVE TO LOOK LIKE SHIT ANYMORE
That's how they tried to sell it but then they just revealed more primaris but with a head swap. It's so lame only marine pigs will love it.
They do know their audience.

>don't care at all for the undead lore just like having necromancers + skellies + the odd Bela Lugosi/Hammer Horror style vampire
Guess I need to justify it. But then x necromancer and x vampire ally does work I suppose.

>>
>>97903701
Dwarf graves, ruined no-name Khazids, great necropolises or like dead dragon lairs. Maybe even some destroyed Orc hold or necromancer towers. For vampires its all either blood, bodies or artifacts of power to get more of the other two.
>>
>>97903554
The necromancer being a Igor to the Vampire Master could work and be interesting.
>>
>>97902373

You are looking for 4th edition Undead my friend

The champion on foot for the Empire troops of the 6e starter set comes to mind. However the pose is not mirrored, but has one foot forward and the weight rests on the back leg.

Even if it's not a separate character make sure one of the models is the Captain's batman/squire.
