There is literally no reason to keep using staves, except at ceremonies. Mana absorption by area is logarithmic, not linear or exponential, so the actual extra mana channeling you'll get over a wand is at best around 40%, and probably more like 15-25%. Wands give you more precision and are easier to transport and handle (and hide). Plus you can use them with one hand while you read off a scroll or tome with your other.

The only practical benefit of a staff over a wand is superior damage against enemy barriers, but it's like, dude, if you need that extra 20~% to break the enemy wizard's barrier, you aren't beating him anyway.

Counterpoint, you can whack someone's head with the staff, I concede that you can poke eyes easily with the wand, but a lot of older wizards have glasses
