Why does Hasbro need to resort to releasing Takara’s products to replace their slop?

I finally remembered to unbox Lio. Some joints feel more loose than you would want from premium TF product, but that's my only real complaint. Really nice looking bot and beast modes.

I managed to sell off my takara waspinator (because i have t30 and this new mold isnt great) and my kingdom megatron (since I got the takara one) and the rest I'm happy to turn into OCs. I mostly want it because I was dissapointed with how MPG handled the arms and the cab using metal when it has to merge with trailer. Seriously, the last thing I'd want from a 260 dollar figure is paint rubbing on the entire cab just by transforming it.

The OP image caught my eye, idk much about transformers with only watching beast wars when I was a kid. Are they going to be doing a maximal set too? Getting the whole cast like that is super convenient.
Also are these all existing releases? If I wanted to just watch some reviews of these what do I look for?

>>11747794
There's just something so alluring about the G2 decos that the G1 decos don't have for me.
>>
>>11747869
you've picked a decent time to jump on.
what the guy below you said is right. This was "Transformers Kingdom" with a bit of "Transformers Legacy", so if you search for those, the character name, and 'review' you'll find it, easy.
Don't get mixed up with the 'Masterpiece' line which is super expensive and complex ones for collectors, that are eerily on-model despite all the cheating from the show
>>
>>11747869
I'm pretty sure there's listings for a Maximal set. The base molds are mostly Kingdom, with Tarantulas and Inferno being Legacy. Those colorschemes are better than the base ones, so if you like the characters then the set would be worth grabbing when it comes out.
Speaking as someone who owns all the molds already; Scorponok is the only real dud mold there. Tarantulus, Blackarachnia and Megatron are great, Inferno is mostly great while Terrorsaur and Waspinator are good.

>>11747905
I understand the gripes on Scorponok and I share them (an upgrade kit helped a little, but he is a ball of baffling choices), but I don't see how Inferno isn't much, much worse. His basic concepts are destroyed in favor of a really awkward beast mode, with stupidly wrongly-shaped legs, and they didn't give him his gun. Even the rerelease just gives you two of his butt-engine. His robot hands are super dumb, his chest is wrong.. basically just the robot head looks good, and kind of the robot legs.
Sometimes it feels like they're in cahootz with the 3P upgrade kit people, except those would stay available longer if that were so.

I just wish I could find nemesis primal for cheap. but that's probably not happening, they simply didn't make enough. fucking exclusives. I was HOPING I could get him and leopard print BA at the same time, but I only managed the latter. She was surprisingly affordable given how her legs were required to parts-swap to make regular BA show-accurate
of course now I'm gonna repaint my regular BA, so I'm not sure if I should switch those legs back first. leopardprint looks good with an all black spider mode.

>this figure should have been rodimus
No way, Rodimus sucks too much to handle the power of rock. If Hot Rod was a young dude with dreams of being a rockstar, Rodimus is the hollow shell of that guy after years of failures, trapped in a downward spiral of self-pity and addicted to short-circuiting himself in order to see visions of the Matrix.
>or blaster
That would have made more sense. But crossovers always go for the face of the franchise.
>>
>>
Any idea on what will come after AotP? I've heard Age of Megatron/Rodimus getting thrown around here and there. There could be potential for a good majority-Decepticon line with focus on their leaders as a contrast to the Primes.
>Star Convoy-sized Super Megatron that won't happen because of the AoE Dinobots
>Transmetal 1 Megatron
>Leader-sized Comic Scorponok to go with the Comic Fort Max next year

>Star Convoy-sized Super Megatron
This will never happen because Super Megatron wasn't Star Convoy sized in the single manga chapter. The Selects voyager Megatron and leader Star Convoy were accurately scaled.

retail on the whole is something that became obsolete with the internet
in the same way that it's stupid to have different cable tv providers because they all provide the same channels (THOSE compete), that should act basically as a utility.
Companies should just sell their shit either directly or through a middleman that they pay, but it's dumb to have different brands of 'store' as if you care what store you go to. you care about prices and products.

Since the 2000's or so when Katoki started doing Armored Core and Macross Frontier. Granted that Optimus is VF-19 based so he should be smoother, but it's not far from the decades of across designs since the original series.

well-obsoived. she's got Avatar neck.
a pretty common problem with robots these days, actually. I don't want to see a big built up trapezius area that makes the shoulders look super low, even IF the shoulders have big pylons that stick up.. if the -attachment point- is that low, it looks bad.

in this case, it does. it looks like the show, and it's kind of amazing... aside from the weirdly overly striking green and underbelly.. which .. I wanna say Takara did a better job with
I wish they sold those energon crystals, those would spruce up my shelf nicely.
The main issue with this mold is that the t-rex head is way, way too small, which hurts both modes. the legs are also slightly too big (megs had big legs, but they were mostly thigh and foot bulk, not like this)

this just looks way better in dino form than the proposed 30th anniversary edition. The takara one looks like its way darker purple, but I can't tell because it could be the photography making it seem that way.
I just hate how unnatural the belly of this extra paint version looks. The random green stripe on the throat is really god damn bad. Also the solid purple tongue looks dumb.

To be fair, the Fire Valkyrie DOES have a big-ass block for a pelvis like that - but it's supposed to have a pointy cover over it that hides it. Likewise, the hips are also supposed to be bare on the sides like that - but the upper thighs are supposed to be much thicker and rounder, which makes it look a lot less awkward. Giving him pencils for thighs and upper arms in an attempt to evoke some Optimus traits was a mistake - you lose all of the organic curviness of the VF-19 by trying to emulate Prime's truck cab.
>>
>>11748930
well he was darker in the show than the rather bright, almost borscht-y purple of the Kingdom one. But I will grant you, the tongue not being painted is a bizarre omission. does anyone have a screencap of the show from him roaring or whatever?

>>
>>11749067
I would not be even a little surprised if there were differences, but nobody has conclusively shown any yet
considering BA still has the visible black joints in her painted legs, i'm thinking they haven't changed anything. I will be miffed if their BA is actually the right robot mode color unlike Takara's though.

Got the Wing kit for Onyx Prime that I've seen around
Great for Robot and Centaur
Noooot so great for Dragon sadly as it's insanely floppy
Which it's not supposed to be
Seems they went cheaper material than what was shown off, so honestly a severe let down
The additional neck joint while cool also makes the head absurdly loose and wobbly
So kinda useless
The extra Spear head is great tho and you can flip it around and have a bigger Spear
>>
I kinda want this set, but better paint jobs or not, I really can't justify spending 220 bucks on characters I already own. Especially knowing that Megatron, Tarantulas and Inferno are the only good toys in there.
>>

Not unless you're really good at customizing, or are willing to sell your existing ones and get back yknow a fraction of what you paid, but that at least takes that 220 down to like, maybe 170.

Finally glad to have one where the fucking back panel/side panel isn't like brownish and breaking up the Truck Mode color like the original does
Shoulders pop easily but I think even on the original it did that. He feels stiffer and more firm/solid when posing so he feels great
I don't know what it is
Great he also came with the Silver styled Star Saber and a piece to have it hang off his back. Glad for that and only really disappointed in the Blades being translucent Blue
He did have an unmasked mouth alt head too so that's cool

Yeah, I was also mentally jumping through the hoops of what I could get for the Kingdom releases, but it's just bad math no matter how you add it up (and I'm normally very good at rationalizing bad uses of money when it comes to toys). But yeah, restraint is always a good thing with this hobby and it's something I'm trying to practice more with TF too. Tempted as I am to just buy everything I want on release, there's no real reason to with certain characters. I want animated Wreck-Gar and Sureshot, but neither of those are tentpole characters, so they can absolutely wait for a bit.

this is faithful to the original beastwars release in dino mode alone
>>11748930
this is more faithful to the show, as is the head sculpt and certain elements.
Honestly it's a bastardization of two different references with a more "modern" dinosaur interpretation, so it being exactly like this or that is thrown completely out the window. It does make me want to buy the cheapest one and custom paint it to be more like the original toy however.
>>
>>11749110
I take toy purchases like i take my performance in a videogame
if I fuck up a little, it's okay as long as most of it's fine. It's only a complete fuckup that requires a teardown and a sacrifice to make up for it.
I think I have the best beast wars collection possible, right now, for what was available to me, fitting my taste, at the best price I could have gotten it for. still hoping I can get green lio for cheaper though.

I know these aren't rare and can be purchased on Amazon for about $13-15 dollars. I ended up with them as part of a huge fodder lot of heads, weapons, energy effects, etc.
I do have some Transformer's Blokees Galaxy blind boxes I need to sell off but I don't think someone who wants to buy THOSE will want one of these tossed in a 'freebie' - which is what the GI Joe general suggested I do with the two of those mini-toys I had.
I'm not expecting to get rich, I just want to dump these and have them sell, or sell something else that people will want and toss these in.

what Takara did is release these as 2-packs, one pred, one maximal. They called it "Premium Finish" (or possibly that's what they called it when released here on specialty stores)

there is a universal thing that people are weirdly unaware of: the more reactive something is, the less stable it is. If something really fucking smells bad, it's gonna stop smelling at all way before something that only smells a little bad. the stink will run out, unless more is being actively generated. explosives spoil, inflammables oxidize, and tasty enough broth can go rancid just sitting on the table. While it is true that Optimus Prime could be called a classical liberal ("freedom is the right of all sentient beings" and all that), this still doesn't track because that is the opposite of what the modern left stands for.
>>

We know you're not trying to be inflammatory, but you're profoundly, irritatingly ignorant.

I mean, they usually go hand in hand.
Teddy Roosevelt and all.
And 90% of the nature preserves are in deeply conservative areas.
Transformers is a very international brand so many people don't know "conservative" in the US means limiting the impact on your life the government has, both positive and negative, whereas in the rest of the world it means traditionalist, i.e. not wanting any change.
Essentially the conservative motto is "freedom is the right of all sentient beings"

I mean yeah my man TR believed we have to preserve nature so we can keep exploiting its resources. But it kinda turns out nature basically self-regenerates, just don't let some hippies tell you to stop clearing out underbrush etc because it's a 'habitat' or whatever.. yeah a flammable habitat. the native americans and australians knew to remove it. If you leave that alone, it burns down and then you don't have your habitats anymore to go hunting in. also if you kill the wolves and stuff then you're kinda fucked. leave those fuckers alone, they're rad. Kill the deer.
but uh, low-population areas have a real habit of voting for huuuge government, because they want to be handed things for free. They'd fuckin love Megatron if he just offered them the right bribe. A blue collar has a strong tendency to be red underneath yknow...

The reason for this is that before the 2010’s rightwingers generally looked down and hated nerdy hobbies. A lot of older ones still do. It's a 27 year old mold that only saw one other, limited run through Botcon Arcee. It was done with a lot of paint flourishes that were common at the time but are now cost prohibitive on top opf that, so even if they find the mold, the costs may be too much for the market(this is part of why G1 reissues are expensive- they're using a bunch of older combinations of production that were common at the time but haven't been used in ages, like rubber tires and diecast. On top of being niche releases. The basic BW reissues didn't sell the best so it makes them unlikely to jump to Transmetals anytime soon.
>>
>>
>>
>>11750857
Yeah, but the new Silverbolt toy is almost identical to the old one, just without the spring-loaded gimmick for the wings. There was no reason to compromise at all - in fact, the removal of said spring-loaded gimmick should have made things even easier for them.
Also, the size of the tail, specifically, never had any bearing on how the robot mode looked, since it always just hung off of his back even on the original toy; someone made a conscious decision to modify a part that wasn't in the way and wasn't going to be visible in robot mode, and there was no reason for it.

I agree that I'd love to see them in vac-metal again, but the reality is that the stuff chips with age, regardless of what you do - and given how I've seen supposedly adults here hamhands and break shit that's supposed to be childproof, I can guarantee people would bitch the moment they start chipping their toys.
I think they did a pretty good job on TM2 Megatron (where the FUCK is Cryotek already, Hasbro!?) by swapping all of his vac-metal for metallic paint, and I think it could work for other Transmetals/TM2s as well if they didn't skimp. Tarantulas, Blackarachnia, TM1 Megs, TM1 Primal (we got an OpOP back in PotP, so I doubt they'd do him again), Dinobot II (with Rapticon repaint), and Rattrap are all on my "want" list.

Incidentally I’ve wondered if Tigerhawk was initially planned as a transmetal 2 silverbolt back in the day. They share a lot of hallmarks in design, and the TM2s used a lot of previous years characters
>>

i think it's more that he was designed as a transmetal fuzor, a combination of the lines, and they already had the idea of 'kind of a griffin'...

Japan really liked the idea of silly beast modes, and the sad thing is, I wouldn't mind that in its own franchise. But it doesn't fit Beast Wars, where the idea is scanning local creatures and MAYBE tricking out their colors and tossing on an extra eye or something.
Then again, this also would never have made a convincing kangaroo. Are those the tiny kangaroo arms poking out of his robot arms? like you'd just be expected to ignore them? Does the tail turn into the head somehow?

Beast forms never mattered after season 1 of the show anyway after the energon on the planet exploded so they could be in robot mode all the time and also became transmetal which meant they never blended in anymore. Even in season 1 though the sizes were off so you had giant wasps and spiders
>>
>>
>>11752527
not the point! scanning animal forms is part of their culture now. To the point they're now called maximum animals and predator icons. Even though it seems like on cybertron they're still vehicling it up out of tradition.
it's just a disconnect is all. i'd rather see a kangaroo transform into a boxer robot, as a nod to the ubiquitous kangaroo boxers. Not a boxer robot that turns into a kangaroo boxer, or a tanuki clock robot that turns into a tanuki clock. It's not changed enough, it doesn't separate the forms properly. Beast Wars worked hard to make even the most superfluous-seeming transformations still work, like a gorilla or a baboon.

I don't think it's his fault that Hasbro is fucking up completing the team. He's just the designer, it's people above him who make the calls of what gets released and when.
You should probably thank him that you have the first three at all, rather than blaming him for why you don't have the final two. Blame his bosses for that instead.

Even if Hasbro ever does the G2 Stunticons, I'd expect them to have much weaker, flatter decos. Motormaster just purple and blue, no peach or teal. Wildrider lacking all the decos on his roof. Menasor without the paint on his limbs to better match the car bots.

>>11753028
Because the arms are wrong, the lower legs are wrong, the face is worse, the wings are far larger and more accurate to how they were in the show. They're smaller on the new figure to cut costs, it also has stupid shit like the fake hinges by the shoulders that are for some reason more prominent than the actual hinges on the original toy.
It would be one thing for these inaccuracies to make up for something in the grand scheme of things but they don't because the transformation, alt mode and robot mode are all worse than the original. It's just unnecessary change for change's sake. Like the other anon said, you didn't need to change the transformation scheme for this figure to work

well more to the point, the show just copied the toy, and it's a very awkwardly-proportioned toy. they just fixed the tail and wing positioning in robot mode, but still allowed them to come up and forward over his shoulders to attack.. because the toys saddled them with REALLY dumb weapons in seasons 2 and 3. >Snarl and Sunstreaker are amateur hour. Try to see if you can spot Gears in the movie for the true Where's Waldo/cameo experience.
I never watched tf-the movie as a kid - i grew up with Beast Wars and was always curious about "that old tf-cartoon where everything is a CAR".
So when i watched it for the first time finally during early 2000s i just thought every "random dead transformer" is literally that - just a random robot from background.
The main characters are those who appeared and survived.
I had no idea those dead transformers were important. I thought artists just drew them like "alright we need some robots that will be killed at the start of the movie..hmmm...okay i will draw this one as white robot with red gloves and red pants - lol - that's pretty fun".
Later when i dug deeper into the transformers fandom i started to think "WAIT...DIDN'T THEY KILLED ALL THESE CHARACTERS IN THAT MOVIE???????"

I wonder what happened to him.
He definitely died.
Perhaps he later joined the battle and was killed by a stray bullet/explosion/grazed by shrapnel/covered in debris. The other Autobots didn't have time to collect the wounded—everyone who could escape had fled. And sunstreaker's dead body probably was lying somewhere unnoticed.
Now i want a figure of him even more because of all that weird stuff/mystery.
>>
>>11753611
I'm in exactly the same boat as you - I also grew up with BW/BM, didn't get to see the movie here until I was in my late 20's, had no real reaction to any of the character deaths because I'm used to a much smaller cast with a much larger focus on their characterizations and just assumed everyone that died was a random unimportant generic character, and didn't realize until much later that these guys actually WERE prominent members of the cast up until this point.

The writers were effectively given a bullet point script by corpo hands. I would not believe for a second that the writers would write the deaths of so many beloved characters otherwise because of how brief and tonally different the Autobot City battle is compared to the entire rest of the show.

Not that anon, but I remember a interview where the writers said they had a plan to kill off a whole bunch of characters in a sort of charge of the light brigade scene.
basically, they all saw the characters as product. the line was being switched for new tows so the old ones had to go. Nobody had a clue that the characters were as loved as they were
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>11753936
>the line was being switched for new tows so the old ones had to go.
But they didn't have to go, they could have simply stopped being featured (as what happened to many of the survivors anyway).
The truth is a lot of fans have it completely backwards. Optimus and other characters like Prowl and Ironhide were not killed "to sell toys", because their toys were already off the shelves anyway in 1986. The writers wanted to kill some people off, either because they were genuinely trying to introduce some gravitas to the movie or because they were tired of holding back and not being able to kill anyone before. So when they got the greenlight that the movie would be uncensored and they could start killing characters that weren't in stores anymore anyway, they went full steam ahead.
Note that they also killed Starscream off while his toy was still being sold that year.

>>
>>11754044
Yes, because they were off the shelves. Exactly.
Not to get them off the shelves to somehow make room for new toys, as the way it's often told. The new toys were there already. Fans get the cause and effect mixed up.

But they could do that without killing characters off. They could simply stop using characters and have them disappear without explanation, as they already did both before and after the movie anyway. As they also did in TF's sister series, GI Joe, all the time as well.
They killed all those bots to add weight to the story and because they could.

>>
>>11754291
Yes? It doesn't contradict anything I said.
Listen to Nelson Shin come right out and say Prime's death scene added humanity to the robots. It was sad and a gut punch on purpose, for the story. Not "to sell toys". That's the simplified version Hasbro tells and you guys buy it because, well, a lot of you are pretty simple. You're the target audience. It's also the cynical corporate answer sometimes given by people who didn't give much of a shit when they worked on the show then and give even less of one now.
You didn't need to kill Optimus to introduce Rodimus and sell a new toy. You could have had Optimus get really beat up, say "I'm getting too old for this shit, you're the leader now Rodimus" and retire. Killing him off was a choice.

And here we have /tfg/'s legendary autism rearing its head once again, where you guys can't read people's clear intentions without being explicitly told.
>>11754302
I always find it fascinating that Ironhide, Ratchet, Prowl, and Brawn are listed here in order.
In other words: the makeup of the shuttle crew was arbitrary and just based on whoever followed Ironhide on this list. They knew they wanted to off Ironhide (a main character and one of the toughest Autobots) for maximum shock value, so he was the chosen POV character for the moonbase opening. Then his crewmates were...whoever was listed after him on the kill sheet.
Note also though that it's a "go ahead and kill these guys off if you want" list, as opposed to a
"you MUST kill these people off to sell the new toys" list as is often argued.
Note also that they didn't kill everyone off on the list, and also DID kill some season 2 bots (at least in the storyboards) that weren't sanctioned to die. I think this was the storyboard artists going hog wild with no one to really supervise or stop them, so you get things like Red Alert and Smokescreen (later switched with Wheeljack) being illustrated to die (despite their toys still being available).

aside from the obvious trio, who are (You) hoping to see with the new SS86 seeker mold? personally SG thundercracker is at the top of my list. I'd also like to see acidstorm in the Universe camo deco

Echoblaster spotted! She's a good birb, even if Beast Box has come up with better engineered ones in recent years (like Whitenoise).
Off-topic, but do you happen to own the new one, Love Gun? All I've seen of it are renders and a few stock photos, so I haven't decided if it's worth it to chase down.

Funny enough the thing that might have marked Wheeljack for death most is that he's one of Chris Latta's characters. Knowing that they had to bail Latta out of jail repeatedly, look at the characters he voiced who vanish or are silent post movie
>Starscream
>Wheeljack
>Sparkplug
>Laserbeak
>Reflector
And big shiny 1986 toy Defensor? Two lines over the entire season.

I would say Sunstorm, but part of me is holding out hope they'll still do him in the ER mold to go with my ER (well, Dramatic Capture) seekers. They can stick him in a 4pack with a few nobodies and I'd still bite.
Not holding my breath through.

Yeah, that's pretty much it I think. Jack's death seems like a last minute pivot. He even had a subplot on Earth in an early script after Magnus and the others left.
The only thing that makes me wonder though is that Cobra Commander was still a major character on GI Joe at this point, albeit demoted.

There are also interviews with the G.I. Joe team how Duke was supposed to die in the G.I. Joe movie and if you watch that scene where he loses the fight with Serpentor, it's very obviously a death scene. The Transformers team got wind of that and were basically like "Oh that's a good idea, we should kill of all our characters too".
The Transformers project finished before G.I. Joe and released first and the negative reaction about Optimus Prime dying lead to the censorship of the script. They ended up changing a line about Duke being dead to him being in a coma. At the end when they are celebrating their victory over Cobra they added a line of dialogue, something like "Doc just called and said Duke woke up from his coma and he's gonna be just fine"

YES! Action Master / Shattered Glass Thundercracker is #1 on my want-list for the new seeker mold! After that, and knowing we'll already have the main three, I'd also like Sunstorm, G2 Starscream, G2 Ramjet, and G1 Thrust. Anyone else is just a bonus.

Got a Bambu A1 with a 0.2mm nozzle recently, been testing it out with TF custom parts. This Seeker is mostly upgraded with resin (the beige parts) but I hamhanded a few bits and figured I'd give FDM a spin. Not gonna lie I'm incredibly impressed with how it prints. I'm still learning a lot, and it can't quite compare to resin for finish quality off the printer (curved bits definitely need sanding) but it's definitely not bad at all, and for big parts it's ideal. Absolutely not planning on abandoning resin, as for heads and the like it's definitely the better bet, but I'm glad I got the machine.

For anyone remotely interested the "recipe" is a KO CW Air Raid off Aliexpress with parts by SteamShield, printed in Resione TH-BJD and Bambu PLA Standard. Planning on making him into Thundercracker- specifically Autobot Thundercracker to go with my CW Silverbolt. I have KOs of Fireflight, Skydive and another Air Raid, torn between just making fancier versions of them or complete OCs.

beastboxen are hard for me to justify the price of for their size. their animal modes are always slightly compromised for the box mode.
I'd buy the fuck out of like, original animal mecha figures with Figuarts articulation.

Don't have the original toy compare, but here's how I feel about it:
-Mammoth mode is a brick, but the movable trunk is nice.
-Big Cannon is annoying as fuck. It has the retarded short pegs Hasbro loves ro use now and the kick stand gets in the way of everything.
-The tonfa and tomahawk are too small, these both could have been bigger so no clue why they gimped both
-The tusks being removable to replaced the gimped tonfa is kinda nice, and including the Neo Cybertron blaster was a nice touch.
-A bit awkward to pose, but he can hold poses very well and the heals can be mistransformed to expand poses.
-The toy feels very solid in-hand.

don't have him but he looks fucking stupid. they almost couldn't have whiffed him any worse..
I'm just now realizing how tiny the big cannon is, too. it's all kibble, barely any gun, like a chode with a lot of pubes.
>>
>>11754747
also his hips are stupid wide for no reason, and his torso all stumpy.. The kibble attaches weirdly and somehow seems more obtrusive than the past, even though it shouldn't be.
I agree he needed a redesign, but this wasn't it.

energon arcee was an omnicon (male) that "evolved" into a female. don't know what else you could really call that but a tranny.
>>
>>
>>11754759
eh that's more of a frog thing. or those pokemon in gen 2 who had their gender code set wrong, so when they came to gen 3 they could change. or however that worked. maybe it was when they evolved, my brain's no good.
