In terms of design he's not exciting, but he seems to have the ability to emulate the powers (and weapons? the exact provenance of his non-zamor shooters is questionable) of other Toa, and of course there's the general mystery surrounding him as an apocryphal 7th Inika with an unknown base element. Definitely more interesting as an obscure bit of pseudo-lore, like Shadow Matoran and the like.

They weren't able to keep up the momentum back then and sales declined, the lack of continuous media probably didn't help, and while it was cool to get different characters all the time, the continually existing and upgrading cast of Ninjago keeps the audience familiar, even to those not actively following the media. Though, they tried that with Hero Factory, so who knows if Tahu and friends could have been the only main heroes for so long (and of course, a fully buildable set isn't quite like a minifigure with alternating prints). It still lasted nearly 10 years, which is pretty incredible for an original theme.

And then G2 had... a lot of flaws, but probably most egregious was the presentation and storytelling. It had some strengths, but it was mostly flash with no substance.

I'd like to think they'd be able to do something better nowadays, but who knows. If they never make more we at least have the stories that already exist.

Entirely possible. Honestly, I'm ok with change, and I know I won't always be the audience. For example with Transformers and the various series, I'll like some, I won't like others, but with that continuous iteration the brand continues to thrive, though the focus recently has turned to the adult fans (I guess kind of like the addition/focus on the Legacy and Legends in Ninjago). I'm not of the mindset that if a new version of a story I enjoy comes out and I don't like it, that it somehow tarnishes what already exists, kind of like G2 and G1, the former's existence does nothing to G1, and if anything it makes us appreciate the depth of it more.

The joint issue was huge cause these are toys at the end of the day. The story is cool for those that were really into it but you need the sets themselves to be stuff that people want to buy. I feel like many fans seem to attribute too much importance to the story in this regard. None of the kids where I lived had any idea of the story outside of the movies, the ads and some of the (mostly non-canon) online content. And many kids knew even less about the story. But the toys were still popular. I guess marketing, atmosphere/style and an implied lore were still important. But the main problems were probably the fragile joints, the sameish builds and the rising prices. And in 2009 Bionicle already switched to that plain "generic elemental hero in bright colors" style Hero Factory and G2 also had. That was probably a factor too.

Thinking back, what really derailed the story for me was Metru Nui. I was well into all the Mata Nui era stuff (I had every book from that era on release) it all built up to Takua becoming Takanuva and giving Makuta a big defeat.
Then it was all immediately thrown into the freezer. A couple of years later, we're finally back to where we left off and Takanuva gets sidelined and the Toa Nuva immediately job. Hurray.

what sets do you guys think have the perfect balance between playability and aesthetics, I only had the OG Toas as a kid but as cool as I think they are I can't get over the fact that they can barely move. from a quick glance I think the metru nui look pretty neat but I can't help but feel like their torsos seem weirdly empty. and I look at some of the last releases and think they probably have great articulation and whatnot but frankly just look a bit shit.

Exactly this. Most things were not designed to last forever, and Bionicle was created for a specific purpose we're far removed from today. LEGO's heart would not be in it the way it was back then. Personally, I'm more than happy with fans carrying that torch, and the nature of building toys means there's no end to the characters and stories fans can create (even if 50% of the time that manifests in them giving toy "robots" tits).

I realize this is sort of sidestepping your question, but for my money, as with all things Lego, the best stuff comes out of the community. I also primarily had the first wave (original Toa, Turaga, McToran, etc.), and revisiting them as an adult, like you, I found them pretty limited. So I looked into some community-made articulated Toa/matoran, and I ended up with these two. Honestly couldn’t be happier. They’re both quite solid and playable, and they’re fairly true to the original proportions and aesthetics (and obviously you can customize them if this or that aspect isn’t to your liking).

I use a modified Gali torso because I don’t own (and didn’t really want to use) the Megablocks pieces required in the other torsos. I also kept the legs less bulky, and I plan to swap out some black pieces for red.
Whole thing was a bit of a pain in the ass, because the video is long and full of jokes and tangents, and many steps are skipped over, but I can’t argue with the end result.

It’s more of a matter of planning too. The Barraki were all monster tamers and could make truces. The Piraka were all trying to backstab each other for any bit of personal power they could find aside Zaktan, whose big difference was he knew you need help in the long run and even then he needed to quell rebellions constantly.
Fight a Skakdi 1v1 and you are dying. Fight a Barraki 1v1 and you have a time limit for reinforcements to arrive.
Matoro lucked out the Ignika gave him necromancy as a test because that gave him an immortal pocket army whenever needed because the moment the numbers got overwhelming Jaller was gonna suicide bomb.

I remember back they at least bothered justifying why the Rahkshi got demoted to mook-tier. They gave us CDs and all with the sets explaining the Rahkshi and kraata have levels, so basically the 6 anti-Toa Rahkshi sets we got were the highest level that Makuta prepared specifically to oppose virtues and elements (like poison capable of killing goddamn fire). Hell, those guys even came with weird bonus powers like being empowered in the darkness in the Mask of Light movie.

My parents despite being able to afford bionicle didn’t spoil me because they wanted me to learn the value of money and spending wisely. After spoiling me and my sister before I learned of bionicles.
I think they failed on that front because I want to buy some bionicles.

Most I’ve got (assembled) are some mata nui models and I recall a bohrok and the rest are in pieces for MOC and others just put into pieces because the sockets got cracks in them.
Seriously I hate cracked sockets.
