Stupid question, I thought it was impossible to get from South America to Central America because of the Darien Gap. Is it actually possible to drive from, say, El Salvador to Buenos Aires? Without getting murdered by narcoterrorists, I mean?

There's a lot of impassable terrain in that corner of South America. The Pacific coast of Colombia is barely developed with very few roads. It's extremely jungly and full of primitive peoples. The dilemma is that you need to bring a lot of cash to travel and buy provisions in such a remote area, but the people will either rip you off or rob you outright, because they know you are carrying a lot of cash. Even the remotest jungle villagers all crave designer clothes and watches and jewelry and all that, and the only way they can get it is by getting their hands on some money. Which isn't happening through any legitimate business.

normally if you come down from panama you would come down on the caribbean side, not the pacific side. you're right about the pacific side, though, the coastal area is very dangerous. but they do have whales and stuff
