I'm surprised there isn't a Korea General. Should we get one started?

Give tips for traveling in South Korea.

If you stay long enough on /trv/, you'll find it's not surprising at all. The few Korea threads we do get eventually devolve into shitposts that either hate the country or shill Japan instead.

The only Asian countries that are popular on /trv/ are Japan, Thailand, and Philippines.

As someone who has a softspot for under dogs, and liked Korea since seeing Taegukgi and blowing up North Korean monuments in Mercenaries on the PS2 with the infinite airstrike glitch. I honestly don't know why a dude would go who wasn't sent by work or stationed by the military. Women have K-Pop and K-Dramas to explain why they might go. South Korea is the middle child of East Asia. China and Japan will absorb the bulk of Western tourists. North Korea is a meme I guess, so it will always attract a certain type of tourist.
Outside of the Korean bbq, the local cuisine is an acquired taste. I mean I know dudes happily living there. They've married a local, and they are far removed from foreigners in way most Japanese gaijin can only dream of. But it's a mystery to me how they ended up there. Most foreigners living there quickly move on to Japan or SE Asia.
My tip for Seoul is go to Hongdae. Eat lots of samgyeopsal, drink lots of Cass and Soju.

Korea is a useless place to go when China and Japan exist
>>
it isn't as shilled on social media or geared towards tourists so its an authentic experience when you are there. It's like how you would have experienced Japan before it became popular and was still obscure.

It’s just a fucking shithole. Somehow Koreans managed to make hyper dystopias of consumerism and authoritarian communism.

I far prefer both of those places to Korea but is that true? I imagine Korea gets far more Western tourists than China

Lol China gets more tourists than even Japan does. It's one of the top 10 most visited place in the world annually.

not that anon but I have been seeing a big spike in people traveling to korea the past few years which was a surprise to me. What exactly do you do there and why go there instead of japan, vietnam, or thailand? I dont have any bad impressions of korea but I genuinely want to know what is drawing people there

Is this true even if you filter for only EU and North American tourists? I'm just going off vibes but at least in US everyone has been to Japan now, many have been to Korea, Im still the only guy who's been to China, for the most part

Most Americans have never left their state

Yes thanks I'm speaking a little imprecisely point being of Americans who travel to Asia it's pretty clear Japan is overwhelmingly destination #1 and China is still seen as off the beaten path
