I went for 2 weeks. I didnt know at the time how rare a clean country was. It has as much litter as Canada. Lots of women with plastic surgery, and everyone everywhere trying to sell you drugs. No nickname pedalers though, just drugs.
Overall I was very impressed with the country.

Only time I felt unsafe some gangsters in gold chains out numbered us, asked if we wanted some coke, we declined, and than they changed the subject to some cool national forests we should see, wished us well, and walked away.

I'm trying to buy some lakefront property on Lake Arenal. As of right now that's where I'll retire. Taxes and visas are very expat friendly. I've actually never been. But sometime soon I'm gonna head down and scope things out.

rent an SUV. I did this with a group of friends. It is not cheap but worth it for getting around. we took turns driving and it avoided all the tourist bus BS. The entry fees everywhere are pretty bad. The food was mediocre, but the cold beers and the AirBnB places with hammocks and covered porches to play cards at night were pretty awesome. The parks are also insanely beautiful but a tad underwhelming if you have spent any time on the west coast.

El Salvador isn't famous for its nature preserves. It's the most crowded country in Central America, and it's also quite poor at $6000 GDP per capita as opposed to $15000 in Costa Rica, so you'll see a lot of rural squalor instead of wild beauty. Not saying you shouldn't visit if you just want to live the simple life somewhere warm for the winter. With airfare going the way it is, I may be bussing south overland from the USA into Mexico and Central America this winter.

Are the beaches there actually good? That is all I am interested in and people hype em up so much.
The beaches in Rio, Brazil were amazing but tons of thieves. I have family who live in Nayarit Mexico and the beaches there are fucking awesome and not crowded.

I looked and a an suv with 4wd for 7 days was $1100+ USD. Thats crazy. When I go I'm gonna use the tourist shuttles + hotel car. My wife and I dont plan on driving around and exploring.

So here's what I'm planning:
Sat Feb 13 to Fri 19.
Fly out of LAX friday night, red eye. Land sat morning. Hotel car to Royal Corin in La Fortuna. 3 nights there then take a tourist shuttle 3.5 hours down to Azura hotel in Samara Beach and do 3 nights there.
